The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, March 12. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Mini-Topic Trio
Linux allows you to do some pretty cool stuff with digital
cameras. Trevor Cordes will demonstrate how to use Linux to
control a Canon SLR, and do some neat post-processing tricks
such as exposure bracketing (AEB).
After 30 years, the writing is on the wall for the venerable
MBR (Master Boot Record). Now that drives larger than 2 TB are
commonly available, something else will have to replace it.
That something is heir-apparent GPT (GUID Partition Table).
Kevin McGregor will discuss the history of disk partitioning,
and how to make use of disks larger than 2 TB under Linux.
The March RTFM will feature Gilbert Detillieux, talking about
the rpm(8) and yum(8) commands, used for package management in
Red Hat and similar Linux distributions.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.
**********************************************************************
Please note our *NEW* meeting location: Room 1L08, Lockhart Hall,
University of Winnipeg, entrance on Ellice Ave. between Spence St.
and Balmoral St.
Parking is available on the surrounding streets and in the lots
on nearby streets. Look for signage once you're at the building,
or ask a security guard.

Sad news...
by MUUG meeting announcements
13 Feb '13
13 Feb '13
It is with great sadness that I report that Doug Shewfelt passed away
Sunday morning of a massive heart attack around 11:00am. Doug's passing
was very quick and very quiet.
Funeral arrangements are being made by the family. Details are not yet
known, but the funeral will most likely take place in Manitou, MB, where
Doug grew up, and where his mother still lives. (This will probably
happen later this week.) I'll pass further information along when I
have it.
Doug was a fellow student with me, in the University of Manitoba's
Computer Science Honours program, from 1979 to 1983. He then went on to
work in IT for the City of Winnipeg, where he continued to work until
this last weekend. He also went back to University, to obtain MSc and
MBA degrees. He was active in the Manitoba UNIX User Group for over 20
years, and served as treasurer for most of that time. His "tech"
interests also included amateur radio.
His areas of interest were almost as numerous as his many circles of
friends, who will greatly miss his endless curiosity, love of learning,
generosity, and wonderfully quirky sense of humour.
Farewell, Doug. Your 51 years on Earth ended far too soon!

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, February 12. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
System Call Tracing
This month's presentation will feature Adam Thompson, who will
show how to profile and troubleshoot UNIX processes without
needing access to source code, through the use of system-call
tracing. Learn where, when, why (and for a few of these, how)
to use dtrace, dtruss, ftrace, ktrace/kdump, ltrace, LTTng,
par, ProbeVue, ptrace, strace, System Tap, tusc, trace, and
truss to find out exactly what that troublesome program is
doing behind the scenes.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, January 8. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Life of Raspberry Pi
The Raspberry Pi is a fully functional motherboard that fits
in the palm of your hand. It has a CPU (ARM11), Ethernet
capability, 512MB ram, USB 2.0 ports and can run Xwindows.
Storage is on an SD card. This presentation will be in two
parts: the first will be a general introduction by Michael
Doob, including installing Linux on the Raspberry Pi. The
second part will feature Wyatt Zacharias, demonstrating the
GPIO (general purpose input/output) pins included on the
motherboard.
The RTFM topic features Gilbert Detillieux discussing lsof(8)
and ftop(1).
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, December 11. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Round-table, Mingling and Munchies
Instead of a formal presentation this month, we will be
starting the holiday season with an informal round-table
meeting at a restaurant. We are leaving our normal meeting
place at the IBM offices, and will be meeting at the Seine
River Café. The Seine River Café is located at 390 Provencher
Blvd, just east of Des Meurons.
We will be meeting for dinner at 6:00 pm. Please email us to
let us know how many people will be attending, so we have an
idea of how much space to reserve with the restaurant. Brad
Vokey will be collecting the RSVPs, so check out the MUUG web
site for details on how to contact Brad.
If you can't make it for dinner, drop by at 7:30 for an
informal roundtable and social meeting - a great chance to chat
with other MUUG attendees and to celebrate the holiday season.
MUUG will be providing a few light refreshments; you can order
more food and drink from the restaurant if you like.
Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive
As we have done in previous years, we are collecting
non-perishable food items for Winnipeg Harvest. Please bring a
non-perishable food to the December restaurant meeting to drop
in our box. Winnipeg Harvest lists their most wanted food
items here:
http://winnipegharvest.org/10-most-wanted-food-items/
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

* Why run an FPGA device
* What you can do with one
* Running a linux kernel on an FPGA
* In-lining custom instructions.
Instead of the RTFM segment, we'll have a Gadget show-and-tell.
Bring along any gadgets or hardware you have so everyone else
can see what's out there.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, June 12. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Ubuntu Mirroring
Do you have multiple Ubuntu servers in your datacenter which
all need regular updates? Are you doing a lot of testing and
"playing around" at home or in a lab? Are you tired of waiting
for slow Ubuntu archive servers? Why not maintain your own
private archive? Kevin McGregor will illustrate two methods of
reducing the download wait for, and bandwidth requirements of,
regular Ubuntu updates.
June's RTFM will feature the ifconfig(8) command, presented by
Rob Keizer.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, May 8. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
ZFS
Edwin Amsler will talk about (and demonstrate, if all goes
well) ZFS. ZFS is a filesystem originally developed at Sun
Microsystems. It has numerous features and has a native port to
Solaris, OpenSolaris, and FreeBSD; Non-official ports have been
made to Linux and Mac OSX. Edwin will be focusing on the basic
usage of the filesystem and the snapshotting features that come
built in.
May's RTFM will feature the parallel(1) command, presented by
Gilbert Detillieux.
