The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, December 8. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Zenworks: The Other CM
Heard about ZENworks but never really seen it? In this month's
presentation, Katherine Scrupa will be discussing her trials
and tribulations with Novell's Configuration and Systems
Management suite. Learn how to control the behaviour of
software bundles, which bugs and gotchas to watch out for, and
discover new version features in the 11.3 version of ZCM.
Round-table, Mingling and Munchies
As 2015 draws to a close, MUUG is going to continue our recent
tradition of turning the December meeting into more of a social
event.
We will have the usual round-table session, followed by a
presentation, and then have some time for mingling, eating, and
drinking. This will be a pot-luck snack event. Cookies and pop
will be provided by MUUG, but members are encouraged to bring
their own finger food to sample and share. Feel free to bring
your own drink as well if you want something particular - just
remember that we don't have a liquor license!
Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive
Also as in previous years, we are combining our pot luck with a
food drive for Winnipeg Harvest. This month, any member who
brings at least 1 item for Winnipeg Harvest to the December
meeting will be given an entry into the door prize draw!
Winnipeg Harvest has information about what they're looking for
on their website:
http://winnipegharvest.org/donate-food/
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, November 10. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana
Robert Keizer will be doing a presentation on Elasticsearch,
Logstash, and Kibana. The presentation will focus on running
these systems in a production environment. Elasticsearch is a
highly available NoSQL distributed database which is primarily
used for real-time and deep searching. When used in conjunction,
these systems provide a very robust and feature-complete
solution for enterprise log management.
Rob will go through setting up and installing all three systems,
as well as provide an overview and example of these systems.
RTFM
For this month's RTFM, Gilbert Detillieux will talk about the
getcap(8) and setcap(8) commands, used to control Linux
capabilities(7) as an alternative to using setuid-root
binaries. This provides a safer way of allowing unprivileged
users to execute operations normally requiring root permission.
AGM
Plus, this month's meeting is the MUUG annual general meeting,
which included the election of the MUUG board of directors for
the 2015-2016 year (which will be by acclamation). There is
also a notice of motion to ammend the MUUG by-laws.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

meeting on Tuesday, Junes 9. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Git Bisect Your Way to Fame and Fortune
Hit a bug that no one is fixing? Don't know enough C to debug
it yourself? In this month's presentation, Trevor Cordes will
discuss using git-bisect(1), in a process from bug discovery
through to kernel patch commit. This isn't some dry, isolated
git rehash either: you'll see how to leverage distro resources
and integrate them with "vanilla", all from a non-kernel hacker
perspective. You'll also learn how to get the necessary
attention of the appropriate movers and shakers. Wrapped in a
riveting story containing angry wives, Downton Abbey, and a
twist ending, this is one presentation you don't want to miss!
This month's RTFM segment will feature fail2ban(1), a versatile
tool for blocking network abusers, presented by Gilbert
Detillieux.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and

meeting on Tuesday, February 10. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
SaltStack for SysAdmins
Theo Baschak will be presenting how to use SaltStack to make
your life easier, whether you administer a few hobby servers or

(planning/testing/backup) skills by publishing templated
configs! Run security updates on all your systems at once. Run
pre-defined distributed Nagios host/service checks via the new
Nagios module! For those that haven't heard of SaltStack
before, it is a configuration management system that enforces
state. It is usually compared with Puppet and Chef, and has
been gaining popularity over the last few years.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
