The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, January 14. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Wireshark
Katherine Scrupa will be presenting Wireshark as the main topic.
"Wireshark is the world's foremost network protocol analyzer.
It lets you see what's happening on your network at a
microscopic level. It is the de facto (and often de jure)
standard across many industries and educational institutions."
Kevin McGregor will be presenting an RTFM from the depths of
CLI Magic; @climagic on Twitter.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

Howdy folks!
A reminder that the MUUG meeting is tonight, December 10, with the
following topic:
Round-table, Mingling and Munchies
As the year draws to a close, we've decided to continue our
not-quite-yet-tradition of turning the December meeting into
more of a social event. We'll have the usual round-table
session, which can run longer than average since there's no
pressure to fit the presentation in, followed by time for
mingling and eating and drinking instead of the usual short
coffee break. This will be a "pot-luck" event, like we've done
in the past. Some food and drink will be provided by MUUG, but
members are encouraged to bring food to sample. Feel free to
bring your own drink, too, if you want something particular
just remember, please, that we don't have a liquor license!
Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive
Also as in previous years, we're combining this with a food
drive for Winnipeg Harvest. We'd like members to bring some
non-perishable food item for donation to the food bank. They
have information about what they're looking for on their
website. Winnipeg Harvest has apparently been running a
shortfall all year, and needs your donations!
http://winnipegharvest.org/donate-food/
So, please come, one and all, with a snack item to share with the group,
and a non-perishable food item for Winnipeg Harvest.
Hope to see you there!...

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding a "special event"
meeting this Friday, November 15. The meeting topic is as follows:
Theo de Raadt on OpenBSD
Theo de Raadt, founder of the OpenBSD project, will be giving an
informal talk about... well, whatever he's comfortable talking
about. We expect to hear something about OpenBSD, but the details
will be a surprise for everyone (possibly even Theo)!
Doors open at 4:30pm. Talk starts at 5:30pm.
Finger food will be provided, courtesy of MUUG. All interested
people are welcome. (There is no charge for this event.)
Location for this special event: King's Head Pub, 120 King St.
The King's Head Pub, across from Old Market Square, is hosting
this talk. The talk will be in the event room on the north side
of the building. Enter through the main door on King St.
Parking is available on surrounding streets and in various
parkades nearby (including an indoor Impark lot immediately south
of the King's Head).

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, November 12. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Visualization
This month is the MUUG annual general meeting, where we'll be
electing our new board for the year, most likely by acclamation.
After the break, Robert Keizer will be presenting a generic
visualization framework, and some applications thereof.
For this month's RTFM, Adam Thompson will talk about the dstat(1)
command, a versatile tool for generating system resource
statistics, and a replacement for vmstat, iostat and ifstat.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, October 8. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Xataface
This month Brad Vokey will (attempt to) give a demonstration
of Xataface: an open-source, full-featured, web application
framework for building front-ends to MySQL databases. Xataface
auto-magically generates web forms, lists, menus, and more, so
that non-technical end users can interact with MySQL databases
safely and effectively using an easy to build custom web
application.
For this month's RTFM, Gilbert Detillieux will talk about the
trap(1p) command, used for signal handling in Bourne shell
scripts. Proper use of "trap" is important in coding scripts
that clean up after themselves.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, September 10. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Cross-Platform GUI Programming
Cross-platform GUI programming is a reality today, not the pipe
dream many imagine it to still be. Doing so effectively
requires using cross-platform tools, however, which programmers
may not have even heard of. Adam will demonstrate the Lazarus
programming environment for Windows and Linux, showing how easy
it is to build, debug and run the same program under either or
both operating systems.
For the RTFM, Kevin McGregor will present a pseudo-randomly
chosen item from CLIMagic's Twitter feed!
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, June 11. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
LyX, Meld, Asymptote
This month, we have three presenters giving short (5-10 minute)
demonstrations of some software that they have found
interesting. Adam Thompson will demonstrate LyX, a WYSIVRTWYG
(What You See Is Vaguely Related To What You Get) document
creation and editing front-end for TeX and LaTeX. Trevor Cordes
will demonstrate Meld, a graphical diff viewer that's designed
for those of us who will never be comfortable with text-based
diff output syntax. And finally, Michael Doob will demonstrate
Asymptote, a markup language for producing high-quality
graphics, which, like TeX, separates the concepts of markup
from presentation, allowing graphics to be drawn with very high
precision.
The June RTFM will feature Gilbert Detillieux talking about the
dpkg(1), apt-get(8), apt-cache(8) and aptitude(8) commands,
used for package management in Debian and similar Linux
distributions.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

meeting on Tuesday, May 14. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Popular P's of Programming: Perl, PHP, and Python
Trevor Cordes, Theodore Baschak, and Edwin Amsler will be
presenting this month on 3 popular scripting langauages: Perl,
PHP, and Python.

Optical Character Recognition program, developed under the GNU
Public License. It converts scanned images of text back to text
files.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, April 9. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, based on the open-source
oVirt platform, competes with VMware vSphere and Hyper-V's
Operations Manager. The University of Winnipeg Library is
implementing a small RHEV system, and Adam Thompson will
introduce and demonstrate the software and discuss some of the
challenges encountered as compared to using VMware vSphere.
