This is a reminder that we're having a charity draw at the next MUUG meeting/mixer on December 14th at 7:30pm
The update is that we'll have TWO copies of Linux Server Hacks to raffle off and another is that every donation item brought in gives you one entry (no limit) though prizes will be limited to one per person. So donate early... donate often as they say!
If you need ideas...
http://www.winnipegharvest.org/help/food/wanted
Therefore I'd like to encourage everyone to come out and bring a small can to join in the fun!
See you there,

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, November 9. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Blogging and Podcasting with WordPress and podPress
WordPress is an open-source content management system for setting up
blogs and websites. It's fairly compact and very easy to set up on a
web server that supports PHP and MySQL. With the addition of the
podPress plugin (a "dream plugin for Podcasters using WordPress"),
you have all you need to set up an audio or video podcast feed that
is RSS2 and iTunes compatible.
In this presentation, Gilbert Detillieux will describe this
software, show some of the trickier parts of setting up the
prerequisite software, walk us through the installation and
configuration of WordPress and podPress, and end off with an initial
posting to a shiny new podcast feed.
This month's RTFM topic will be on DNS resolution. Sean Cody will
discuss and demonstrate some tools for DNS resolution in UNIX and
some lookup tools such as dig(1), host(1) and nslookup(1).
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.
**********************************************************************
Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave.
(between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to
sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you
(in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm,
so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may
not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not
be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required
to show photo ID at the security desk.
Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice
Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also
available nearby, at Portage Place, for $5.00 for the evening. Bicycle
parking is available in a bike rack under video surveillance located
behind the building on Webb Place.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, October 12. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
The Wireless Neighbourhood
Over three years ago, neighbours and MUUG members Kevin McGregor and
Kelly Leveille thought they had some cool ideas for data sharing
that would work well via a direct link between their homes. They had
briefly experimented with using their broadband Internet connection,
but they were disappointed by the asymmetric connection speeds.
This month, Kelly and Kevin will discuss the hardware, firmware,
topology, trials and tribulations, configuration and eventual
successful implementation of their private, wireless-connected
network. With pictures, and demo-free!
Plus, this month's meeting is the MUUG annual general meeting, which
will include the election of the MUUG board of directors for the
2010-2011 year. You must be a MUUG member in good standing, and be
present at the meeting, in order to vote.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

Hear ye, hear ye!
This is FINAL CALL for nominees to participate in the election
for the MUUG board. Those elected will serve from October 2010 until
October 2011. The deadline to nominate yourself, or someone else, is
September 28, 2010. Instructions follow.
The MUUG board is charged with coordinating the meetings and other
events by the group. It's fun, and you get a role in guiding the group.
All are encouraged to apply. (And a big "thank you" to those who have
already done so!)
------------------------
MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations
Every October the Manitoba Unix User Group holds its Annual Meeting, the
main goals of which are to elect a new Board of Directors and to pass
any special resolutions. (Aside from that, it is a regular meeting)
*Any MUUG member in good standing can be nominated to run for a position
on the Board.*
As of this writing, the following members of the current Board have let
their names stand for re-election:
Sean Cody Senior System Admin. Prime Focus VFX Services
Gilbert Detillieux Systems Analyst University of Manitoba
Michael Doob Professor University of Manitoba
Kevin McGregor Network Analyst City of Winnipeg
Doug Shewfelt Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg
Adam Thompson Consultant athompso.net
(Montana Quiring has withdrawn his nomination.)
Of course, this list is just a starting point. Any member in good
standing of the group can be nominated simply by getting the support of
one other member. If you feel you would like to contribute to the group
by running for a board position, please don't hesitate to do so. (In
fact, we'd like to see the number of board members increase.)
If you want to be nominated, or to nominate someone else, send a letter
to the group's postal box or deliver it in person to a current board
member. The letter must contain the name, title, and employer of the
nominee, along with a short (100 word or so) biography, and must contain
the signatures of the nominee and one other member. The letter must be
received no later than September 28, 2010, which is 14 days prior to the
October 12 meeting.
Although the by-laws require that the nominations be done in writing,
with signatures, you can speed up the process by sending e-mail to
<election(a)muug.mb.ca>, with the above information, and sending the
signed paper copy later. In this case, please include the e-mail
address of both the nominee and the supporter on the CC: list of the
message, so that all parties concerned have a record of the communication.
Nominees should familiarize themselves with the MUUG bylaws, found here:
http://www.muug.mb.ca/pub/bylaws/
If you have any questions about the election or the nomination process,
please contact Gilbert Detillieux, either by phone (474-8161) during
business hours, or by e-mail to <election(a)muug.mb.ca> anytime.

Once again this month, were offering you a trio of RTFM
presentations! To start, Gilbert Detillieux will be introducing the
diff(1) command. Next up, Michael Doob will follow up on Adams RTFM
in June on the awk(1) command, showing you how to use it for more
substantial scripting. Finally, Sean Cody will present the screen(1)
and tmux(1) commands.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, June 8. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
IPCop
IPCop is an open source Linux distribution that turns an old (or
new) PC into a stateful firewall. IPCop is geared towards home and
SOHO users and offers services such as DHCP server, HTTP proxy, IDS
and VPN server, which are all fully configurable through an
easy-to-use web interface. IPCop has very low hardware requirements.
In this presentation, Jonas Lippuner will show how to install IPCop
on an ordinary SD card and a Mini-ITX board.
Before the break, as this month's RTFM topic, Adam Thompson will
speak about the awk(1) command.

meeting on Tuesday, May 11. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Podcasting
Podcasting lets you share your thoughts with the world through an
audio subscription model. How would you plan and organize a podcast
of your own? What tools should you use to record, edit and encode
your podcast? What distribution tools are used? How much does it
cost to podcast? Can you use free or open source software for
podcasting? MUUG member Brian Doob has been podcasting for three
years and will answer these and many other questions.
