The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, April 10. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
pfSense Firewall
Adam Thompson will talk about (and demonstrate, if all goes
well) pfSense, a wholly UNIX-based network firewall and network
services appliance that can run on anything from embedded
devices up to the latest super-servers. pfSense is based on
FreeBSD, and thus uses the pf(4) packet filtering framework
from OpenBSD to do most of the heavy lifting. Supporting
multi-WAN, HTTP acceleration, DNS, DHCP, authentication, and
wireless NIC's among other features, it's an ideal system for
someone who wants a free, open-source firewall that's still
incredibly easy to manage.
April's RTFM will feature the date(1) command, presented by
Michael Doob.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.
**********************************************************************
Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave.
(between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to
sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you
(in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm,
so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may
not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not
be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required
to show photo ID at the security desk.
Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice
Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also
available nearby, at Portage Place, for $5.00 for the evening. Bicycle
parking is available in a bike rack under video surveillance located
behind the building on Webb Place.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, March 13. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
The Cloud: The catchphrase of the last year, and two years to come.
The basics.
Everyone by now has heard of "The Cloud." Most people, even in
the IT industry, are baffled as to what the cloud actually is.
This no-frills, down-to-earth presentation by Rob Keizer will
be on what it is, what its uses are, and the basics of setting
up a private one.
March's RTFM will feature the sort(1) and uniq(1) commands,
presented by Brad Vokey.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and

*A reminder that this meeting is next Tuesday.* (Hope you didn't show up
last night!)
The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, February 21. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Linux LVM
One of the most important new developments in the Linux 2.6
kernel was the Logical Volume Manager, version 2 (or LVM 2).
Logical volume management is a widely-used technique for
deploying logical rather than physical storage. With LVM,
"logical" partitions can span across physical hard drives and
can be resized (unlike traditional ext3 "raw" partitions).
Kevin McGregor will summarize the basic principles behind the
LVM and provide examples of basic operations which can be
performed with it.
February's RTFM will feature the traceroute(1) command,
presented by our president, Katherine Scrupa.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, January 10. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
VPN over SSH, VM Install of Linux
This month's meeting will start with the usual round-table
discussion and RTFM topic, followed by two mini-topics.
January's RTFM is brought to you by the letter "c" and Michael
Doob, who will present cron(8) and the crontab(1) command.
Next, Sean Cody will show us how he does VPN tunnelling using
SSH and tunnel devices, and a few other ssh tricks like session
mixing and ad-hoc port forwarding. Adam Thompson will then
demonstrate installing CentOS 5.x and Ubuntu 11.10, and discuss
their relative footprints, in a virtual environment.

Howdy folks!
Just a reminder that the MUUG meeting is tonight at 7:30pm. After the
round-table session, we're having a time for mingling and munchies, and
it's pot-luck - so please bring your favourite goodies or finger food
along to share. The MUUG board will take care of soft drinks, plates,
napkins, etc.
Also, please remember a tin for the bin (or other non-perishable food
item), which will go to Winnipeg Harvest. Not sure what to bring?
Here's Harvest's top 10 list...

Hope to see you tonight!

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, December 13. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Round-table, Mingling & Munchies
As the holiday hustle and bustle gets into high gear, we'll
take it easy this month, with a longer-than-usual round-table
session (if there's a need for it), followed by a time for
mingling and nibbling on munchies (instead of the usual, short
coffee break).
*PLEASE NOTE:* The food will be pot luck, so bring some of your
favourite goodies along.
And since this is the season for giving to those in need, we
ask that you bring a tin or other *non-perishable food item* for
Winnipeg Harvest. Also, instead of the usual door-prize draw at
the end, we'll be auctioning off an original two-volume set of
UNIX manuals from Bell Labs, with proceeds going to Winnipeg
Harvest.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, November 8. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Migrating to IPv6
This is your chance to try out IPv6 without having to set up a
tunnel. Presenter Mark Jenkins will bring a wireless access
point and provide auto-discoverable, IPv6-only access to
everyone at the meeting, with real public addresses. (He'll use
a tunnel for upstream). So, bring your laptops and other
portables... the more platforms the merrier!
After seeing who is and isn't able to use the connection, and
what's actually out there in the cold world of IPv6-only
addresses, Mark will present some basic theory, show how to do
static configuration on GNU/Linux, and reflect on how the
transition to IPv6 could play out.
Time permitting, the challenge of witting reverse DNS entries
with the aid of the $ORIGIN keyword in BIND will be
demonstrated, and the ease of configuring the route
advertisement daemon in use for the demonstration shown.
Plus, this month's meeting is the MUUG annual general meeting,
which includes the election of the MUUG board of directors for
the 2011-2012 year, as well as a vote on a special resolution
to amend the MUUG by-laws. (Members: Check your newsletter for
details.)
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of

Hear ye, hear ye!
This is the FINAL CALL for nominees to participate in the election
for the MUUG board. Those elected will serve from November 2011 until
October 2012. The deadline to nominate yourself, or someone else, is
October 25, 2011. Instructions follow.
The MUUG board is charged with coordinating the meetings and other
events by the group. It's fun, and you get a role in guiding the group.
All are encouraged to apply.
------------------------
MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations
Every year, in the fall, the Manitoba Unix User Group holds its Annual
Meeting, the main goals of which are to elect a new Board of Directors
and to pass any special resolutions. (Aside from that, it is a regular
meeting.) Any MUUG member in good standing can be nominated to run for
a position on the Board.
As of this writing, the following MUUG members have let their names
stand for election or re-election:
Sean Cody Consultant TinFoilHat
Trevor Cordes Owner/Operator Tecnopolis Enterprises
Gilbert Detillieux Systems Analyst University of Manitoba
Michael Doob Professor University of Manitoba
Robert Keizer System Administrator Thinkbox Software Inc.
Katherine Scrupa Info Systems Desk Tech St. John's Ravenscourt
Doug Shewfelt Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg
Adam Thompson Consultant athompso.net
Brad Vokey Owner Fortress Software Inc.
Of course, this list is just a starting point. Any member in good
standing of the group can be nominated simply by getting the support of
one other member. If you feel you would like to contribute to the group
by running for a board position, please don't hesitate to do so. (In
fact, we'd like to see the number of board members increase to 10.)
If you want to be nominated, or to nominate someone else, send a letter
to the group's postal box or deliver it in person to a current board
member. The letter must contain the name, title, and employer of the
nominee, along with a short (100 word or so) biography, and must contain
the signatures of the nominee and one other member. The letter must be
received no later than October 25, 2011, which is 14 days prior to the
November 8 meeting.
Although the by-laws require that the nominations be done in writing,
with signatures, you can speed up the process by sending e-mail to
<election(a)muug.mb.ca>, with the above information, and sending the
signed paper copy later. In this case, please include the e-mail
address of both the nominee and the supporter on the CC: list of the
message, so that all parties concerned have a record of the communication.
Nominees should familiarize themselves with the MUUG bylaws, found here:
http://www.muug.mb.ca/pub/bylaws/
If you have any questions about the election or the nomination process,
please contact Gilbert Detillieux, either by phone (474-8161) during
business hours, or by e-mail to <election(a)muug.mb.ca> anytime.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, October 11. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Mini-HowTo Topics: MBR Rescue and Dropbox
What happens when you trash your MBR? Rob Keizer will discuss
ways to get your system up and running again quickly.
Dropbox is a free file sharing service with client support
for Windows, MacOS X, Linux, and even some mobile platforms.
It lets you automatically replicate files to any of your
configured clients, share them with other users, or access
them from the web. Gilbert Detillieux will show Dropbox in use,
and show the installation of client software under Linux.
Before the break, as this month's RTFM topic, Michael Doob will
talk about using the rsync(1) command.
Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm,
