Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 14. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: UNIX Printing with CUPS and LPRng This month, Adam Thompson gives us a look at printing under UNIX with the popular CUPS and LPRng systems. LPRng re-implements the traditional UNIX printing model, adding support for modern features. CUPS targets the much newer Internet Printing Protocol, but provides a traditional user interface for UNIX users. He'll try to provide some insight into the confusing variety of printer drivers that exist on Linux today. Time permitting, demonstrations will include setting up a printer and printing across a network. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Call for nominations -- reminder

There is a little over a week to go before nominations for the MUUG board close... ----- This is a call for nominees to participate in the election for the MUUG board. Those elected will serve from October 2003 until October 2004. The deadline to nominate yourself, or someone else, is September 30, 2003. Instructions follow. The MUUG board is charged with coordinating the meetings and other events by the group. It's fun, and you get a role in guiding the group. All are encouraged to apply. ----------------------- MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations Every October the Manitoba Unix User Group holds its Annual Meeting, the main goals of which are to elect a new Board of Directors and to pass any special resolutions. (Aside from that, it is a regular meeting) Any member in good standing can be nominated to run for a position. As of this writing, the following people have been nominated. Gilbert Detillieux Kevin McGregor Doug Shewfelt Adam Thompson To put your name on the list, do the following: 1. Ensure your membership is in good standing (ie do you have to renew?) 2. Find another member willing to second your nomination 3. Email your nomination to <election(a)muug.mb.ca>, with a CC to your seconder 4. Get your seconder to send an email to <election(a)muug.mb.ca> indicating their support for your nomination It is important to include the following information in your nomination: Name, Title, Employer/Occupation, short (100 word) biography. Without this information, we can't put together the list of nominees to give to the rest of the members, can we? In the event the number of nominees is fewer than the number of vacant positions, all will be accepted by acclamation. If there are more, decision will be made by secret ballot at the Annual Meeting. Nominees should familiarize themselves with the MUUG bylaws, found at http://www.muug.mb.ca/pub/bylaws/. Any questions about the election or the nomination process can be directed to Sean Walberg at the election(a)muub.mb.ca mailbox, or by phone at 975-5987 during business hours. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Regular Expressions In our September meeting Steve Moffat will be talking about Regular Expressions. Some say the "Generalized Regular Expression Parser", or grep, may be the most frequently used command in Unix. Using this simple command more effectively can save you time and give you better results every day. Whether it is grep, egrep, fgrep, perl, or any of the other programs that use or support text pattern matching, you can use Unix better if you know what Regular Expressions can do for you. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Linux Clusters The ability to cluster servers is one of the biggest steps toward acceptance of Linux in mission-critical applications. There are multiple clustering products available, and Red Hat now bundles two different types with their Enterprise server product. Clustering can increase both the reliability and the scalability of many different types of applications. Adam Thompson will be our presenter for this month. Three types of clustering will be discussed (Failover, LVS & Beowulf) and some typical examples of each will be presented. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Samba 3 Samba is a suite of programs that seamlessly provide SMB/CIFS file-and-print services to Windows clients. A robust and reliable implementation, it is now at version 2.2.8. What's in store for the future? In development now, and available for download for testing is version 3.0alpha. This version has many enhancements to the 2.x versions, including Active Directory support (this release is able to join a ADS realm as a member server and authenticate users using LDAP/Kerberos), Unicode support, better Windows 2000 printing support including publishing printer attributes in Active Directory, support for migrating from a Windows NT 4.0 domain, support for establishing trust relationships with Windows NT 4.0 domain controllers, and lots of other changes! The meeting topic for this month is as follows: An Introduction to Python Python is an object-oriented, interpreted, high-level, dynamic and easy-to-use programming language. It features high-level data types, a simple class model, a rich standard library, exception handling, an interactive shell to try out code "on-the-fly" and much more. Python runs on almost every platform you can think of from Linux to the Mac, and has even been ported to the Sony Playstation 2. Brad Bollenbach will introduce you to this "other language that begins with P" and show you how it can make your life easier, your code simpler and how other people are putting the language to interesting use. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Wiki and TWiki Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly. We will focus on a Wiki implementation called TWiki, a flexible, powerful, and easy to use Web-based collaboration platform. Use TWiki to run a project development space, a document management system, a knowledge base, or any other groupware tool, on an intranet or on the internet. Web content can be created collaboratively by using just a browser. Developers can create new web applications based on a Plugin API. Bill Reid will be presenting this month's topic.
