I've received quite a few phone calls and e-mail queries about this, so I thought I'd let everyone know... *** The MUUG meeting is still on for tonight, as previously scheduled. *** Steve Moffat, our MUUG contact at IBM, has been in touch with the building security staff at the TD Centre, and they've told him that there will be no problem with us having access to the building after hours. I've since found out that the Albert Street parkade has raised its evening/weekend rate to $2. You'll need to buy two $1 tickets (a loonie or 4 quarters for each of the two tickets) if you wish to park there for the evening of the meeting. -- Gilbert E. Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 11. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Linux At The Movies Final Fantasy, Shrek, Pearl Harbor, Titanic, Lord of the Rings, and The Matrix. What do all these movies have in common? Linux. Linux was used in some way during the production of each movie. Some were rendered completely on Linux, some used Linux for specialized tasks. This presentation will cover what software is available for the budding filmmaker running Linux. And we will answer the question: "Can you make a movie entirely under Linux?" Shawn Wallbridge is the Systems Administrator at Frantic Films, one of Canada's leading Visual Effects studios. Shawn has covered network security topics under Linux at previous MUUG meetings, and returns for the September meeting with what should be a visually interesting presentation. So, we'll see you... At The Movies! The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 12. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: The Return of BSD In the open source world, the word Linux is almost synonymous with Operating System. As of April 1999, 31.3% of the world's network-connected machines run Linux. Comparatively, 14.6% run BSD UNIX. Some of the world's largest web operations, such as Yahoo!, run BSD. The world's busiest FTP server, ftp.cdrom.com, uses BSD to transfer 1.4 TB of data per day. Even Microsoft's flagship Hotmail service used to run BSD. So what's the secret? Why isn't BSD more well known? This month, Roberto Urrea, Senior UNIX/NT Administrator with the University of Winnipeg's Technology Solutions Centre, will be talking about FreeBSD, about how it differs from Linux, and about running Linux programs on FreeBSD. FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD all include options to allow Linux binaries to run on these systems (at least for the Intel x86 architecture). Adobe User Group Tour

The Winnipeg PC Users Group is hosting an Adobe User Group Tour presentation on Saturday, May 5th, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Their web site indicates that it will be held at Club Regent. They have invited members of the Manitoba UNIX User Group to attend. According to the announcement they sent us, "products to be demonstrated include Premiere 6, AfterEffects 4, GoLive 5, LiveMotion, Photoshop 6, Illustrator 9 and the latest Adobe new products." They would like to know how many people are interested in attending from our group. The presentation will be about netfilter, the packet handling facility of the 2.4 kernel. Specifically, the differences between netfilter and ipchains, and using netfilter to do basic packet filtering, masquerading, and other fun stuff.
