The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 14. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: BrandZ - Running Linux in Solaris 10 Zones With the release of Solaris 10, two new important features were added to the operating system: zones and dtrace. With zones, multiple instances of the OS can be configured, enabling a virtualized deployment environment. In this presentation by Sun's Willem Van Schaik, we will look into the next phase, called BrandZ, which allows the installation of non-Solaris operating systems like Linux and BSD into a zone. Linux running in a Solaris Zone opens up new possiblities, like analyzing and debugging Linux programs with DTrace. BrandZ is still under development, but try-out versions are available as part of OpenSolaris and Solaris Express. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: UNIX@Work, UNIX@Home Once upon a time there was a LAN, a LAN where chaos reigned... OK, maybe it wasn't quite that dramatic, but the early days of networking were quite different than today for Gilbert Detillieux, a system and network administrator for the University of Manitoba's department of Computer Science for over 16 years. In this mini-presentation, in what we hope will become a semi-regular series of UNIX@Work/Home presentations, Gilbert will describe how the LAN-scape changed over those years at the University, and the role UNIX has played in taming the wild frontier of the Internet. Starting from scratch with your home network? Where do you start? Where do you go from here? Kevin McGregor is dealing with these very issues in setting up a network in his new home. He will cover hardware and software, clients and servers, backups, data integrity, network infrastructure, cabling plants and much more, all in less than 30 minutes! Note: We have changed the date for this month's meeting to the 3rd Tuesday, so that folks can spend Valentine's Day with their sweethearts. Hi folks. The December issue of MUUG Lines, our monthly newsletter, was mailed out this morning. We rushed to get it out earlier than usual, to hopefully beat the holiday rush, and get the newsletters to you in time for the meeting. Unfortunately, we missed a couple errors, which we only noticed after it was too late: The next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 13th, 2005. The following meeting will be on Tuesday, January 10th, 2006. With a handy little GPS unit, you can know exactly where you are in the world down to a few meters at the push of a button. In Part 2 of last month's presentation, Shawn Wallbridge will present on web-based mapping. He will primarily be covering Mapserver, a web-based mapping application by the University of Minnesota. MUUG Board Elections - FINAL CALL for Nominations

Hear ye, hear ye! This is the FINAL CALL for nominees to participate in the election for the MUUG board. Those elected will serve from October 2005 until October 2006. The deadline to nominate yourself, or someone else, is September 27, 2005. Instructions follow. The MUUG board is charged with coordinating the meetings and other events by the group. It's fun, and you get a role in guiding the group. All are encouraged to apply. ----------------------- MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations Every October the Manitoba Unix User Group holds its Annual Meeting, the main goals of which are to elect a new Board of Directors and to pass any special resolutions. (Aside from that, it is a regular meeting) Any member in good standing can be nominated to run for a position. As of this writing, the following members of the current Board have let their names stand for re-election: Gilbert Detillieux Systems Analyst University of Manitoba Kevin McGregor Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg Doug Shewfelt Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg Adam Thompson Consultant athompso.net Shawn Walbridge System Administrator Frantic Films Of course, this list is just a starting point. Any member in good standing of the group can be nominated simply by getting the support of one other member. If you feel you would like to contribute to the group by running for a board position, please don't hesitate to do so. (In fact, we'd like to see the number of board members increase.) If you want to be nominated, or to nominate someone else, send a letter to the group's postal box or deliver it in person to a current board member. The letter must contain the name, title, and employer of the nominee, along with a short (100 word or so) biography, and must contain the signatures of the nominee and one other member. The letter must be received no later than September 27, 2005, which is 14 days prior to the October 11 meeting. Although the by-laws require that the nominations be done in writing, with signatures, you can speed up the process by sending us e-mail to <election(a)muug.mb.ca>, with the above information, and sending the signed paper copy later. In this case, please include the e-mail address of both the nominee and the supporter on the CC: list of the message, so that all parties concerned have a record of the communication. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Open Source on the Linksys WRT54G Bill Reid will demo the WRT54G wireless router running Open Source firmware. Linksys used Linux to create their firmware and released the source. Many versions of the firmware are available. Bill will demo the firmware version from Sweasoft. Hopefully he will also be able to demo the OpenWRT Linux distro for the WRT54G, and possibly also Asterisk running on OpenWRT. Bill will also demo a couple of IP phones: the wireless WiSIP and the Sipura 841. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June.
