The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, December 13. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Designing Passwords - The Mnemonic Evolution of Password Generation
17-year MUUG member Ihor Jakowec will present some interesting
techniques for remembering long passwords by taking advantage of
visual memory hints and kinesthetic memory (or "dance moves" as he
calls it).
Round-table, Gadget Show and Tell, Mingling and Munchies
As 2016 draws to a close, MUUG continues our recent tradition of
turning the December meeting into more of a social event. Bring
your favourite gadget! We will have the usual round-table session,
followed by a gadget show & tell, a short presentation, and then
some time for mingling, eating, and drinking. This will be a
pot-luck snack event. Cookies and pop will be provided by MUUG,
but members are encouraged to bring their own finger food to
sample and share. Feel free to bring your own drink as well if you
want something particular - just remember that we don't have a
liquor license!
Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive
Also as in previous years, we will combine our pot luck with a food
drive for Winnipeg Harvest. This month, any member who brings at
least 1 item for Winnipeg Harvest to the December meeting will be
given an entry into the door prize draw!
Winnipeg Harvest has information about what they're looking for
on their website:

The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a

meeting on Tuesday, September 13. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Midnight Commander
Brian Lowe will demonstrate and discuss Midnight Commander. It is
a text-mode console-based file manager that combines a pair of
easy to navigate file panels with a command line. Together they
provide a powerful and versatile environment for viewing, moving,
and copying files and directories.
RTFM: cal
This month, Brad Vokey will demonstrate cal, a simple calendar
display program for the command line. Learn some neat tricks about
this useful tool.
Door Prizes
On top of whatever else is on offer this month, we'll have a copy
of the O'Reilly book "Advanced Perl Programming" as a door prize.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, June 14. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Gentoo
Eric Raine will be presenting on the Gentoo Linux Distribution.
Differences in installation from Ubuntu will be covered. Also
covered is how to configure installation of packages and update.
Gentoo is a free operating system based on either Linux or FreeBSD
that can be automatically optimized and customized for just about
any application or need.
RTFM: Terminal Control Commands
Due to a recent influx of new and novice members, Trevor Cordes
will be doing an RTFM instead of a daemon dash this month. The
topic is something every *NIX user should master: terminal control
commands (e.g. ^Z and ^L) and rudimentary job control. These little
dual-key presses will streamline your terminal sessions and make you
more efficient. You'll wonder how you ever got by without them!

meeting on Tuesday, May 10. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Now in 3-D! (Double Daemon Dash)
In this case we mean that this meeting will feature a Double
Daemon Dash (DDD) instead of one DD and one regular
presentation:
In Wyatt's Daemon-Dash segment he will be presenting the Squid
caching proxy server daemon. Squid is a full featured proxy
daemon with support for http, https, and ftp. Wyatt will show
the quickest way to have Squid up and running on a new server,
and how to keep it secure.
Paul Sierks will present on DavMail.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, April 12. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
GNUPlot
Brian Lowe will be presenting gnuplot, a powerful mathematical
graphing and charting program. In constant development for the
past thirty years, gnuplot is a mature command-driven program
capable of producing presentation-ready charts and graphs.
Brian will be showing some of the more impressive 2D and 3D
graphs gnuplot can produce, and a couple of practical charts
he's used the program for.
Daemon-Dash: NFS
In this month's Dæmon Dash segment, Adam Thompson will
demonstrate simple, common use cases for NFS (Network File
System) sharing.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, March 8. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Thunderbird
Brad Vokey will be doing a presentation on Thunderbird, a
free, open source, cross platform email, news, and chat client
developed by the Mozilla Foundation. Brad will focus on how to
customize Thunderbird with extensions (and other little known
features) to take this email client into power user territory.
Topics will include the extensions: Keyconfig, Nostalgy,
QuickFolders, Quicktext Pro, Signature Switch, Xnote, and
Expression Search. He will also briefly cover tags, message
filters, search folders, and other built-in tricks to help
reduce the time you have to spend on email each day.
New Segment: Daemon-Dash
MUUG is proud to announce a new segment that has been dubbed:
Daemon-Dash. The idea behind Daemon-Dash is to have a quick
15-25 minute presentation on a daemon, and dive right into the
meat of the content. DD's will forgo the usual introductory
theory and use cases, instead showing users how to start using
the daemon right away.
Daemon-Dash: dnsmasq
For our first ever Daemon-Dash segment, Paul Sierks will be
presenting dnsmasq. Geared towards small networks, Dnsmasq
provides DHCP, DNS, and TFTP services. Written in C, it
features a small CPU and memory footprint making it suitable to
run on just about anything, such as a home router. It has been
adopted by some distributions which have it configured as a DNS
cache. Other use cases include BOOTP and PXE network booting.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a

particularly their use for quick rollback.
