The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will not be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, April 14th:
April 14, 2020: CANCELLED
In light of the current concerns over COVID-19 and the risk of
infection, and in keeping with a directive from the University
of Winnipeg (which states "All discretionary events on campus
currently scheduled until May 1, 2020 will be postponed."*),
the MUUG board has decided to cancel the April 14th meeting.
The board will be looking into ways we can provide a remote,
virtual meeting for subsequent months, if the current public
health circumstances continue. (Stay tuned for updates on future
meetings.)

Regarding good science on keeping ourselves safe, individual action is
very important, except we can accomplish much more and this with less
effort through collective action as borne out by a super CBC Q&Q program
20200228 providing some honest-to-goodness good science. For details
please see "We may have passed the tipping point in the COVID-19
coronavirus outbreak" @ the following which includes a link to the 15
minute program segment.
https://www.cbc.ca/radio/quirks/feb-29-coronavirus-containment-window-closi…
From other news Canada is one of very few countries that is using early
detection standards with almost zero human to human transmission while
countries such as Italy and Iran have already experiencied explosive
transmission trends and the US is close behind all because they only
test once the patients are gravely ill and by that time containment is
nearly impossible. California, Washington and New York are at the cusp
of widespread transmission vectors.
In short because of our proximity and interexchange with the US, BC
foremost followed by Ontario East are at greatest risk of being the
early adopters of this outbreak.
BTW sneezing/coughing into your elbow is actually very poor science as
explained by Q & Q. If you cough into your hand, best with a tissue and
then wash immediately, this is much better science than coughing into
your elbow when the virus can survive for over a week and each time you
cross your arms you reinfected your hand...

get started) and the bad (where did X go?) with an emphasis on
several demonstrations of the software capabilities.
Michael Doob will be presenting.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, December 10. The meeting topic for this month is as
follows:
UNIX@50 (A Personal History)
UNIX turned 50 this past summer. Gilbert Detillieux has worked
with UNIX systems for the last 40 of those 50 years. In this
not-too-technical presentation, Gilbert will take you through 5
decades of UNIX evolution (with some personal reflections on the
last 4 of those decades). Come for the interesting trivia, stay
for the philosophical musings!
Round-table, Mingling and Munchies
As 2019 draws to a close, MUUG will continue our recent tradition
of turning the December meeting into more of a social event.
*Bring your favourite gadget!*
We will have the usual round-table session, followed by the RTFM
presentation (see above), then a gadget show & tell, and finally,
some time for mingling, eating, and drinking.
*This will be a pot-luck snack event.*
Cookies and pop will be provided by MUUG, but members are encouraged
to bring their own finger food to sample and share. Feel free to
bring your own drink as well if you want something particular - just
remember that we don't have a liquor license!
Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive
Also as in previous years, we will combine our pot luck with a
food drive for Winnipeg Harvest. Cash donations are preferred this
year as every $1 Winnipeg Harvest receives, they are able to pick
up and deliver $20 worth of groceries.
*Any member who donates at least $1 or brings at least 1 food item
will be given an entry into the door prize draw!*
Winnipeg Harvest has information about what they're looking for on
their website:

The group holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every
month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.
