The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting online, on Tuesday, December 14th, at 7:30pm:
Jellyfin, Extended Round-Table and Show-and-Tell
MUUG has a tradition of making the December meeting more of an
informal, social gathering. Because we're still meeting online,
we've had to let go of some of the traditional aspects of this
year-end meeting (like sharing food), but we will try to keep some
of our socail December tradition alive.
Show us your favourite gadget! As part of an extended round-table
discussion, we'll try to keep the gadget show-and-tell. (This
year, you don't have to haul it to the meeting site, but it will
have to be small enough to show on your webcam!) If you have a
cool device, something unusual, whether brand new or ready for the
museum, there will be an opportunity to show it off.
Mini-Presentation: Jellyfin
This month, Wyatt Zacharias will demonstrate Jellyfin, a suite
of free and open-source multimedia applications designed to
organize, manage, and share digital media files to networked
devices.
Harvest Manitoba
We won't be able to collect food and cash donations this year, but
please remember that the needs for some may be greater than usual.
We encourage you to donate to Harvest Manitoba, or your
favourite local charity.
This will once again be an online meeting. Stay tuned to our
muug.ca home page for the official URL, which will be made
available about a half hour before the meeting starts. (Reload
the page if you don't see the link, or if there are issues with
connecting.)
The group holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every
month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting online, on Tuesday, November 9th, at 7:30pm:
Jitsi vs Big Blue Button:
Jitsi setup on AWS - Wyatt
BBB setup on OVH - Adam
This month, Wyatt Zacharias and Adam Thompson will be
demonstrating setting up two different videoconferencing solutions
on two different hosting platforms. MUUG has been using Jitsi for
its own meetings over the last year, and tried out Big Blue Button
for last month's meeting.
AGM
Plus, this month's meeting will be the MUUG annual general
meeting, which included the election of the MUUG board of
directors for the 2021-2022 year (by acclamation, again this
year).
This will once again be an online meeting. Stay tuned to our

Ardour Audio Software
This month, Troy Denton will be presenting Ardour. Available on
Linux (as well as macOS and Windows), Ardour allows you to record,
edit, mix and master audio and MIDI projects. If you are an
audiophile, or a beginner wanting to know how to get into audio
manipulation, or just curious and like to see audio represented
graphically, then this presentation is for you.
RTFM
Katherine Skrupa will be talking about grepcidr, a tool that
filters input by IP addresses and networks, using both IPv4 and
IPv6. The grepcidr command can be very useful in networks,
including mail filtering, network security and log analysis.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting online, on Tuesday, September 14th, at 7:30pm:
tmux(1) - THE terminal multiplexer
This month, following up on his newsletter article from June, Brad
Vokey will demonstrate tmux(1). tmux enables a number of terminals
to be created, accessed, and controlled from a single screen. It
can then be detached from your screen and continue running in the
background, and then reattached later. Each session is persistent
and will survive accidental disconnection (such as a ssh(1)
connection timeout) or intentional detaching. Each session can
also be attached to multiple different terminals, for easy access
to your running server processes and current environment from
multiple different computers all at the same time. Brad will go
over the basic commands and concepts and will also demonstrate the
tmux plug-in manager (tpm) showing us some useful plug-ins
including:
- tmux-resurrect (persists tmux environment across system
restarts)
- tmux-yank (tmux plugin for copying to system clipboard)
- tmux-autoreload - Watches your tmux configuration file and
automatically reloads it on change.
- tmux-continuum - Continuous saving of your tmux environment.
Automatic restore when tmux is started. Automatic tmux start
when computer is turned on.
and possibly more, if time permits!

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting online, on Tuesday, June 8th, at 7:30pm:
Introduction to PeerTube:
A Free and Decentralized Video Hosting Platform
The internet continues to trend towards large, corporate owned
websites and platforms. No one can deny that large platforms are
amazing and convenient! But due to their sheer scale, social
networks have difficulty with moderation and preventing abuse.
Rules that work well for one set of users might be unacceptable to
others, and automated moderation tools perform poorly outside of
the culture and language they were developed in.
These concerns have encouraged a wave of federated, decentralized
social networks, loosely labeled the "fediverse." Similar to how
email servers work today, any admin can run an instance of a
social network, which then associates with other servers to share
content and hosting costs. PeerTube is the most popular federated
video hosting platform in this space, with an active community and
many instances.
Join us this month, as Chris Audet explores a possible future
direction for video driven social networks. Chris will discuss why
you might want to host a PeerTube instance, the cool underlying
tech, and the role of alternative social networks in a world
dominated by giants.
