pretty much ... the one time i *really* need one ... otherwise, i'll have
to break down and find more parts to make one up ... trying to work on too
much at the same time ...

At last night's meeting, our new super-fast MUUG mirror at Les.net was
mentioned, but I forgot "where" it is, and I can't find any reference to it
on the MUUG site. Where is it?

Following up on Kat's question during last night's RTFM, it looks like
the ignoreip option in a jail's configuration affects the filter (rather
than the actions), in that the "Currently failed" and "Total failed"
counters for that filter don't increment when a failure is logged for an
IP that's in the range/list of the ignoreip option.
So, in short, those IP's are completely ignored, for all intents and
purposes, by fail2ban.

Have any of you heard about SourceForge's recent takeover/highjacking of
GIMP for Windows and Nmap? This was a bit of a shocker to me. It seems
to be a way of forcing the inclusion of adware in downloads, for popular
projects that don't agree to it.

The beginning of the end for a former open source champion? So sad when
short-term thinking takes over.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, Junes 9. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
Git Bisect Your Way to Fame and Fortune
Hit a bug that no one is fixing? Don't know enough C to debug
it yourself? In this month's presentation, Trevor Cordes will
discuss using git-bisect(1), in a process from bug discovery
through to kernel patch commit. This isn't some dry, isolated
git rehash either: you'll see how to leverage distro resources
and integrate them with "vanilla", all from a non-kernel hacker
perspective. You'll also learn how to get the necessary
attention of the appropriate movers and shakers. Wrapped in a
riveting story containing angry wives, Downton Abbey, and a
twist ending, this is one presentation you don't want to miss!
This month's RTFM segment will feature fail2ban(1), a versatile
tool for blocking network abusers, presented by Gilbert
Detillieux.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.
*****************************************************************
Please note our *NEW* meeting location for this month: Room 1M28,
Manitoba Hall, University of Winnipeg, entrance on Ellice Ave.
between Spence St. and Balmoral St.
Parking is available on the surrounding streets and in the lots
on nearby streets. Look for signage once you're at the building,
or ask a security guard.

I'll be able to bring back a limited quantity of books with me from BSDCan; let me know this week if you'd like me to get anything from MWL, first-come-first-served.
I'll be in Ottawa for BSDCan on June 9th (the regular MUUG meeting), so if you want reading material this summer, I recommend making arrangements to pick it up from me after I'm back the following week!
(If you have no idea who this guy is, and you work with UNIX, you owe it to yourself to check him out.)

The printer says that they'll have FreeBSD Mastery: ZFS ( https://www.michaelwlucas.com/nonfiction/freebsd-mastery-zfs ) to me before I leave for BSDCan.
And they've sent UPS tracking numbers. Numbers that UPS acknowledges. While they don't show a delivery date yet, UPS says that the boxes exist.
So I'm pretty confident in saying that I'll have books there. And I take Square.
The list price is $24.99 US. Given the exchange rate, they'll be $25 USD/$30 CAD for a "FreeBSD Mastery: ZFS" print/ebook bundle.
