re: switchdesk, RedHat, and WMs

Thanks! I have decided to basically stick with the command line as the GUI under the sad hardware I have on the machine 7.3 runs on is bad. Until I can find a decent video card and maybe find a 15" monitor, I will just stay at the command line and learn from that first. Thanks again for the help though, and I will put this all to good use just as soon as I can get a better video setup. Dwight Wallbridge, Webmaster, Geek, Blogger. Gilbert pointed out that most of the subscribers to the roundtable list had their mail disabled. We do not know when or why this happened but my suspicion is that it occurred around June 5th. I have re-enabled everyone's email. Please check the archives for missed messages. Sorry for the inconvenience, Bill

switchdesk, RedHat, and WMs

Walberg" <sean(a)poochie.ertw.com> To: roundtable(a)muug.mb.ca Subject: switchdesk, RedHat, and WMs Message-ID: <Pine.LNX.4.44.0206120931530.23666-100000(a)poochie.ertw.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII There was a discussion last night about how to switch around window managers/desktop environments, and which file did what. I just took a peek at a RH 7.3 box, and came to the following conclusions: /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is run when X is started. This file first checks for the existance of ~/.Xclients. If it exists, it is run Failing that, /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients is run. However, if it doesn't exist, fvwm2 is tried, followed by twm (not really an issue in Red Hat) /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients makes its decision about which desktop to run based on /etc/sysconfig/desktop. The line PREFERRED=GNOME or PREFERRED=KDE will make the default windowing environment GNOME or KDE respectively. You could also do "PREFERRED=twm" to have twm the default Finally, switchdesk copies the appropriate file from /usr/share/apps/switchdesk/ into your ~/.Xclients (and doesn't modify /etc/sysconfig/desktop as I had originally thought, sorry). So, in a nutshell, the rough order of things is: ~/.Xclients (manual, or by switchdesk) /etc/sysconfig/desktop (if it exists) GNOME KDE afterstep|windowmaker|mmaker fvwm95|fvwm|fvwm2 mwm|lesstif twm Sean - -- Sean A. Intel serves up Manitoba
by Kevin McGregor 06 Jun '02

06 Jun '02

Found at http://zdnet.com.com/2110-1105-932153.html: Intel is adding one more item to its menu of dishes for wireless cell phone makers. The company confirmed on Tuesday that the code name for the "Internet on a chip" processor it's been working on since last year is "Manitoba" and that it plans to announce the chip in 2002. Manitoba integrates flash memory, a digital signal processor, and an XScale processor core onto a single chip. It will be targeted at cell phone makers developing products for high-speed wireless networks, such as GPRS (General Pack Radio Service) networks. Manitoba will help in the development of phones that let users wirelessly access the Web and play audio files, as well as make basic phone calls. --Richard Shim, Special to ZDNet News [No word yet on why they chose "Manitoba".]

72 pin SIMM
by millward 04 Jun '02

04 Jun '02

Does anyone out there have any ancient 72 pin SIMM they don't need? I'd preferr a pair of 16 Meg chunks since this P 133 takes memory in pairs, but I'm interested in 8 or even 32 Meg chunks if there's two of them. I intend on using this powerful P 133 beast as an server for an LTSP network for a couple of 486s, just to see how LTSP works..

MUUG Meeting, June 11, 7:30PM -- OpenBSD Network Security and VPNs
by gedetil＠cs.umanitoba.ca 04 Jun '02

04 Jun '02

[Posted to man.unix.general and other news groups] ------ Forwarded Article <adisg3$jm7$1(a)canopus.cc.umanitoba.ca> ------ From gedetil(a)cs.umanitoba.ca (Gilbert E. Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 11. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: OpenBSD Network Security and VPNs Continuing with last month's presentation on OpenBSD, this month Shawn, Chris and Sean will be setting up an OpenBSD firewall. They will be talking about pf, the new firewall built into OpenBSD 3.0. Also discussed will be VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) and setting up an IPSEC VPN using OpenBSD's isakmpd. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our new meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15 PM, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30 PM. Don't be late, or you may not get in. Limited parking is available for free on the street, or in a lot across Ellice from IBM, for $1.00 for the evening. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $2.00 for the evening. ********************************************************************** For more information about MUUG, and its monthly meetings, check out their Web server: http://www.muug.mb.ca/ Also note that MUUG maintains two mailing lists, called "muug-announce" and "roundtable". If you're not already on these lists, we encourage you to subscribe now: http://www.muug.mb.ca/mailman/listinfo/ The "muug-announce" list is used for monthly meeting announcements (such as this one) as well as other important announcements of interest to MUUG members. The "rountable" list is meant to be a forum for follow-ups to topics discussed at the meetings, or for round-table-style discussion on other topics that come up between meetings. Of course, for this to be effective, we need to reach a certain critical mass. So, please subscribe, and stay involved! -- Gilbert E. O'Reilly Mac OS X Conference Call for Participation (fwd)
by gedetil＠cs.umanitoba.ca 03 Jun '02

03 Jun '02

Hi folks. This arrived by e-mail just now, and is too late to be included in the June newsletter. Since there was a lot of round-table discussion on Mac OS X last month, I thought a few of you would be interested in this... Date: Mon, 3 Jun 2002 16:13:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Marsee Henon <marsee(a)oreilly.com> Message-Id: <200206032313.g53NDB426836(a)smtp.oreilly.com> To: gedetil(a)cs.umanitoba.ca Subject: O'Reilly Mac OS X Conference Call for Participation Hello User Group leaders, Can you pass this information along to your members? O'Reilly Mac OS X Conference Call for Participation-- Proposals Due June 14, 2002 O'Reilly & Associates invites the submission of tutorial and session proposals for the first-ever O'Reilly Mac OS X Conference, taking place at the Westin Santa Clara in Santa Clara, CA from September 30 to October 3, 2002. We're looking for proposals that bring state-of-the-art Mac OS X content to programmers, developers, technical staff, and power users from Mac, Java, Web, and open source communities. Topics include migration issues, must-have tools, servers and networking, wireless, Project Builder, Apache, PHP, Perl, Terminal application, databases, languages, Development Frameworks, and iApps. Submitting Proposals Proposals need not be works of art--a thoughtful summary or abstract of the talk you plan to give is sufficient for consideration. We prefer outlines for tutorials. The proposal is what the conference committee uses to select speakers, so give the committee enough information to understand the topic you're covering. Individuals and companies interested in making presentations, giving a tutorial, or participating in panel discussions are invited to submit proposals using this form: http://conferences.oreillynet.com/cs/macosx2002/create/e_sess Proposals will be considered in two categories: tutorials and conference presentations (sessions). Important Dates: Proposals Due: June 14, 2002 Speaker Notification: June 20, 2002 For Mac OS X Conference information see: http://conferences.oreilly.com/macosxcon/ Thanks for your help, Marsee -- Gilbert E.
