UPS
by Brock Wolfe 02 Aug '02

02 Aug '02

Well its time to get out of the procrastination easychair and upgrade my UPS. I've used APC 500 and 625 VA UPS's on various PC's in the past. However these UPS don't seem to last, with electronics and batteries failing. I am looking to replace the smalller individual units with a single larger unit around 3000VA to support a server/network cluster. While batteries can't be expected to last forever, I am looking to improve the lifetime and reduce long term costs of providing UPS. The current individual UPS's will be be spun out to cover less critical PC's. Anyone with suggestions, testimonials, or works of advice on larger UPS installations. Or does this plan have an achillies heel? Brock Wolfe ___________________________________________________________ "The problem is not that there are problems. I am looking at using ReiserFS on a RedHat Linux 7.3 installation as a data drive. Can anyone give me some info on the stability of this fs? Opinions on whether it is better/as good as ext3? Thanks. Writing backups to Pioneer DVR-A04 DVD-RW writer.
by Scott Balneaves 12 Jul '02

Hello all, Here's one I can't figure out. Downloaded cdrtools-1.11.dvd.tar.gz, and compiled. Nice and clean worked like a champ. Wrote about 70 megs to the drive. Worked great. Here's the rub. I've got a 4.7 gig RW disk in the drive, and I'm trying to write 2.7 gigs or so of data. My output's below. Am I doing something wrong here? It says the data won't fit on the disk. Huh? Script started on Fri Jul 12 13:07:14 2002 [root@gandalf dump]# df -k Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/hda1 505605 290572 188929 61% / none 127568 0 127568 0% /dev/shm /dev/hda5 7408260 2638208 4393732 38% /usr /dev/hda2 4127108 94856 3822604 3% /var /dev/hdb1 19694836 2533728 16160664 14% /dump [root@gandalf dump]# ls -al total 2533729 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jul 12 13:07 . drwxr-xr-x 20 root root 1024 Jul 12 11:07 .. drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 16384 Jul 12 11:06 lost+found -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2591981568 Jul 12 11:16 usrdump.iso [root@gandalf dump]# /opt/schily/bin/cdrecord -v -dao dev=0,0,0 -data usrdump.isoo Cdrecord 1.11a08 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jörg Schilling TOC Type: 1 = CD-ROM scsidev: '0,0,0' scsibus: 0 target: 0 lun: 0 Linux sg driver version: 3.1.20 Using libscg version 'schily-0.5' atapi: 1 Device type : Removable CD-ROM Version : 0 Response Format: 2 Capabilities : Vendor_info : 'PIONEER ' Identifikation : 'DVD-RW DVR-104 ' Revision : '1.20' Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD. Is there anything funny about the files in question? Do you have permissions on them? Are they regular files or special devices? Can you list them here? ~ ~ :qwilson@midworld.org - Lunky C++; Lunky do {;} > > Message: 1 > Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 08:38:21 -0700 > From: Brock Wolfe <obwolfe(a)shaw.ca> > To: "roundtable(a)muug.mb.ca" <roundtable(a)muug.mb.ca> > Reply-to: Wolfe <obwolfe(a)shaw.ca> > Subject: [RndTbl] stuck in tar > > After cloning a hard disk I discovvered missing files on the target hard > drive. Well after more digging found that the files not included in tar archive were tied to hard links. Displayed by find command: find . -type f \! -links 1 -prinff "%i %n %p\n" | sort -n Now I need a solution to cloning a partition that clones hard links correctly. - tried drivecopy ( died on CRC error ) - dd incorrectly writes one less sector than read on partions with odd numbered sectors Brock Wolfe ___________________________________________________________________ "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal." --- Henry Ford ___________________________________________________________________

stuck in tar

After cloning a hard disk I discovvered missing files on the target hard drive. After looking around it seems that tar did not include files from multiple locations on the source hard drive. In a specific case it failed to include 6 files from the /sbin directory. The tar command used (login as root) on the source disk ( RH 7.1, ext2 ) was : tar cvplf /var/tmp/root.tar / Repeating this exercise on a (RH 6.2 ext2) box did not duplicate the problem of missing 6 files. Repeating the following command on the orginal source disk (RH7.1 ext2) reproduced the problem of missing 6 files.. tar cvplf /var/tmp/sbin.tar /sbin I would just move these 6 files over by other means but there are too many files in other partitions missing to make this practical. Any ideas on the source of the problem? hi gurus, looking at a unix system, x display. is it possible to takeover control of the mouse cursor on a system level? ie. instead of having to move the mouse to move the cursor, is it possible write a program which moves the cursor automatically ? and that movement is not restricted to having the cursor inside its own window? i am sure there's got to be a low level function call to move the mouse in response to mouse-device movement. just not sure if it's accessable to programmer. any help is greately appreciated regards tien

Actually, grub itself doesn't need any of that, it simply passes it on to the Linux kernel. :) But the kernel would have needed that all along. I suspect it was getting it from someplace else before your 7.3 upgrade. Since you seemed to have an appropriate append statement in /etc/lilo.conf, I suspect you had been using LILO previously, and just switched to grub in this latest upgrade. Since grub is the default selection, it's easy to do that without even realising it. -- Gilbert E.
