SCSI emulation returns... burner works
by millward 08 Jul '02

In grub.conf I added hdc=ide-scsi and Red Hat automatically updated fstab during boot. cdrecord -scanbus showed a device at 0,0,0 I had prepared a file in /usr/LTSP using mkisofs -r -J -o /usr/LTSP/ltsp.iso /usr/LTSP ( got this from an English Linux magazine. I can never understand man documents ) So I tried to burn a CD using cdrecord -v dev=0,0,0 speed=4 /usr/LTSP/ltsp.iso and it looked good. I booted into ms windows and the CD is readable under DOS too. Thanks for all the advice. I would never have figured this out on my own. Strange that in 7.2, grub didn't need the statement hdc=ide-scsi, but I quess things change all the time. Thanks again!

Re: [RndTbl] lost SCSI emulation - burner no work

According to millward: > I upgraded from Red Hat 7.2 to 7.3 and lost my SCSI emulation, > so now cdrecord -scanbus can't find any SCSI devices and > I can't use my burner. > fstab has not changed from 7.2 > /etc/rc.d/rc.local has > /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi > /sbin/modprobe sg This should not even be required anymore, but it can't hurt. In any case, if this is the only thing you've got in there to load the drivers, then it's not enough, since at the point rc.local is run, your IDE drives have already been allocated to the IDE driver, so ide-scsi will just ignore them. > I've looked, and there is no ide-scsi in sbin No, it's a kernel module, and would be here... /lib/modules/`uname -r`/scsi/ide-scsi.o > In /etc/modules.conf I've got > append="hdc=ide-scsi" I hope you meant /etc/lilo.conf here... But are you still using LILO to boot your new Linux version, or have you switched to grub? In that case, you'd need to do the equivalent thing on the "kernel" line in /boot/grub/grub.conf, e.g. something like... kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-5 ro root=/dev/hda2 hdc=ide-scsi (Your kernel version and root device may vary.) > I've done > chmod 666 /dev/scd0 > chmod 666 /dev/scd1 ( This is just a home machine so > don't have to worry about security) > The burner is the secondary master in the BIOS so hdc looks OK. > Does this mean I'll have to do a dreaded "kernel compilation"? > I've installed the 2.4.18-3 kernel source in /usr/src/ just in case, > but I'm not excited about compiling kernels. Kernel recompilations are rarely ever needed anymore with Red Hat Linux, since most drivers are set up as loadable modules. Don't recompile your kernel unless you really know what you're doing and really need some feature that's not otherwise available, otherwise you may just break other things that are working fine as is. > Is there anything else I can do to get back my scsi emulation > without compiling the kernel ? Absolutely. Try the above, and if that still doesn't work, there may be another approach to loading the ide-scsi driver which will work (similar to the way Red Hat pre-loads other SCSI drivers via ramdisk). -- Gilbert E. lost SCSI emulation - burner no work
by millward 08 Jul '02

Did a lsmod and got Module Size Used by sg 32612 0 ( unused ) ide-scsi 9312 0 scsi_mod 103904 2 [ sg ide-scsi ] Duh? What does this mean? It looks to me that I already have SCSI emulation but its not working the way it should for the burner. The burner is the secondary master. For cdrecord dev=0,1,0 used to work before the upgrade. cdrecord -scanbus finds nothing. cat /proc/scsi/scsi attached devices=none Any information would be most appreciated.

lost SCSI emulation - burner no work

I upgraded from Red Hat 7.2 to 7.3 and lost my SCSI emulation, so now cdrecord -scanbus can't find any SCSI devices and I can't use my burner. fstab has not changed from 7.2 /etc/rc.d/rc.local has /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi /sbin/modprobe sg I've looked, and there is no ide-scsi in sbin In /etc/modules.conf I've got append="hdc=ide-scsi" I've done chmod 666 /dev/scd0 chmod 666 /dev/scd1 ( This is just a home machine so don't have to worry about security) The burner is the secondary master in the BIOS so hdc looks OK. Does this mean I'll have to do a dreaded "kernel compilation"? I've installed the 2.4.18-3 kernel source in /usr/src/ just in case, but I'm not excited about compiling kernels. Is there anything else I can do to get back my scsi emulation without compiling the kernel ?

FTP problems
by S/C Conway 02 Jul '02

02 Jul '02

G'Day, I have been trying for months to connect to a vendors FTP site using my Linux box (RH7.2), with no success. I can connect to the site but when I issue a command (e.g cd or get <filename> I recieve ENTERING PASSIVE MODE (IP ADDRESS) and after some time connection timeout. I know the box at the other end is NT4.0. If I use a windows 98 O/S no problems. Does anyone have some suggestions to analyize the problem? I can use some links to do some reading if you have them. Free Data Emergency Guide
by gedetil＠cs.umanitoba.ca 26 Jun '02

26 Jun '02

Howdy folks! I just received, in the MUUG mail box, a sample booklet from a company called Action Front Data Recovery Labs (www.actionfront.com) The booklet is called Data Emergency Guide, and provides general (in most cases not system specific) advice on data loss prevention, backups, and how to recognize and resolve a data loss emergency. They also use the guide as a way of promoting their company's data recovery services, of course. They are offering user group members additional free copies of the guide. All we have to do is contact them, indicating the number requested. The guide is also available online, in PDF format: http://www.actionfront.com/guide02.pdf If you think you might be interested, please view the guide online first, then, if you want a printed copy, please e-mail me and let me know before July 10 at the latest. I'll collect and count the responses I've received at that point, and contact the company to request that many printed copies. -- Gilbert E. LTSP on Slackware?
by millward 26 Jun '02

26 Jun '02

Can LTSP be installed on Slackware 8.0 ? It uses kernel 2.2.6 Unfortunatly the Slackware forum was shut down about 6 months ago when someone published a list of XP registration numbers on it, otherwise, I'd ask there. It's no problem to use an older Red Hat, its just that I'm used to Slackware and its already installed on the hard drive I want to put LTSP on.

Does anyone know of a user interface that brings the action to where your mouse is sitting. Instead of taking me off to the side somewhere and forcing me to move the mouse cursor to the question, let the question come to where my mouse cursor is. Don't force us users to waltz that mouse across our desks all day long. That will become a big boost in productivity I think. ===== "The sooner you make five thousand mistakes, the sooner you will be able to correct them." - Kimon Nicolaides __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I read an interesting post on the web today
by Mel Seder 20 Jun '02

I'm anxiously following the Microsoft battle with the nine states and a litigation feud with BURST (some kind of protocol) people. The posing indicated Microsoft pretended they were going to buy the techology but instead they stole the code and changed windows so that the BURST protocol wouldn't run. Only the new and improved M$ version would execute. I don't know if this is BullShit or not. If it is true and hits the press this would be very restrictive for Microsoft's future at this stage of the Judges deliberations. I hope the Judge will show courage and stand up for the Americans and for the rest of the world too. I think the time is just right for a well built operating system like linux to grow and become even better not even richer. Has anyone seen this story posted by a reliable news site? ===== "The sooner you make five thousand mistakes, the sooner you will be able to correct them." - Kimon Nicolaides __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
