The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 18. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: LiveCode This month, Brad Vokey will give a demonstration of LiveCode: an open source, cross-platform, rapid application development language. LiveCode evolved from MetaCard (the original Unix HyperCard clone) into becoming a true cross-platform IDE capable of running on iOS, Android, OS X, Windows, and several variations of Unix including Linux, Solaris, and BSD. It can be used to write mobile, desktop and server/CGI applications and is the most widely used HyperCard/HyperTalk clone. LiveCode uses a high level, English-like programming language that is dynamically typed and tightly integrated to your program's interface. The language and compile-free work flow generate code that is self-documenting and very easy for casual programmers to comprehend. As this month's RTFM topic, Wyatt Zacharias will compare and contrast the curl(1) and wget(1) commands. Please note change in meeting date for this month. This month's meeting is also the Annual General Meeting, where we will have an election (most likely by acclamation) for the new MUUG board of directors for the 2014-2015 year. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) weird ssd image issue

I made a drive image of an SSD using dd a while back. I had to go back to the image to do a repair, and something is wrong with the image. When put back on the SSD and a boot is attempted, Windows7 won't boot. I check it with linux and it says the main NTFS FS is corrupted. I run fixes on it and I can mount it and look at many files, but every 50 or so files generates an I/O error when listing the directory entry, let alone trying to read the file. I do these types of images all the time and consider myself an expert at it, and never have these types of problems (even on source disks that are already dying). One of the only things I could come up with is I noticed while doing this image restore that the customer (who built it themselves) had used a SATA2 cable on a 6Gb/s SATA3 port (and the SSD is 6Gb/s). Could this have caused corruption of data "on the wire"? Is that even possible? Would wire-caused errors be detected by the mobo, or is it just the drive that does checksums? Do 6G mobos and drives detect when a 3G cable is used and downshift to 3G? The system seemed to run fine for a year setup this way, so perhaps the errors are very infrequent but doing the image at full-blast reading the whole 120GB in a few mins caused this problem? The SSD died (actually, is dying) 3 weeks after the image was made, so there is also a chance the drive was just screwing up already and giving me back bad data. However, the customer had no problems with Windows during the 3 weeks until I/O started showing up in Windows. Lastly, can a mis-wiring like this kill an SSD? This is an OCZ Vertex 420 drive (a brand I don't sell, but they bought elsewhere) and we already have RMA'd the drive once, and it definitely is dead a 2nd time now. Either OCZ SSDs suck bad, or perhaps something else is going on? Perhaps a mis-wiring can cause the SSD to detect errors and request re-dos from the OS causing a multiplication of writes? Just guessing here. Most likely the OCZ just sucks rocks. I read some other people on the net having real big problems with dying OCZ SSDs.

Ubuntu -> Kubuntu

I just installed Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS, and I was wondering what Kubuntu would be like on the same system. Is it as easy as apt-get install kubuntu-desktop and logging out/in (or rebooting)? Are there any gotchas to look out for? I've installed a couple of apps, specifically VMware Workstation and Google Chrome. Will they continue to work transparently? That is, I don't need to re-install them, do I?

wanted: Seagate 2TB

Do you own a Seagate ST2000DM001 2TB drive? That's their cheap desktop line of which they have sold zillions. For a project, I need a close match to an existing drive. If you have one of these drives that matches what I need, I would be willing to trade you your old drive for a brand new 3TB ST3000DM001 drive! You can't lose! So check if your drive (the sticker on the top) matches: PN must be 1CH164-575 date code should be very close to 13493, preferably one that starts with "13" (the year) and maybe between 1320 and 1350 (year plus week). As a bonus, if you have a way to weigh the drive, that would really help out also (though not required). If you think you have a match, email me all the numbers on the sticker, or a pic of the sticker. Only the first close drive someone offers to me will get the deal, sorry! Thanks!

Solaris fix for the bash bug

I'm trying to apply IDR 126546-06 to our Solaris servers. One of them (eventually) went fine. The second one I tried failed with this message: ERROR: IDR 126546-06 cannot be applied until all Interim Relief/Diagnostics are backed out. Dryrun complete. No changes were made to the system. Okay, so how do I find a list of IDRs I need to back out of? This is Oracle Solaris 10 9/10 s10s_u9wos_14a SPARC (SunOS <server> 5.10 Generic_142909-17 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V490). Both servers show have been identically installed; how do I find out the differences, on a package basis? Kevin
