bisecting distro kernels

I'm still struggling with that horrible oom-killer kernel bug present in all post-3.11 kernels. (To feel my pain, see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1075185 ) I even posted to the LKML and got zippo replies. There's nothing else I can do now but Git bisect. Here's my dilemma, you can't really bisect distro-modified kernels, or in my case Fedora (source) SRPM files. The reason is those don't really exist in Git. The distro takes the Git files, freezes them, adds its own stuff (patches, etc), and makes up its own RPM SPEC file (or similar for DEB, etc) and then slaps its own kernel version number on it (the third and fourth numbers). For Fedora, some guy has a page and scripts to help bisect kernels "the Fedora way" but his scripts fail due to yet another 32-bit bug (see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1090186 ) meaning I can't use them. I'm not sure what his things even do to make it all gel, but I haven't found any other references to bisecting "the Fedora way". So the question becomes, should I just forget all the Fedora-specific tweaks and patches and just try to build myself a vanilla kernel and do the bisecting that way? Now, for sure I don't want to answer the config questions on my own so I'll have to find a way to steal or modify the config (and perhaps most of the SPEC file) from Fedora to ease the process. Does this seem reasonable? The last thing, is it seems distro kernel version numbers seem to have nothing to do with kernel version numbers beyond the 2nd dot. For instance, Fedora has a 3.11.10-200, but "Linux" doesn't really have a 3.11.10 version. They only have a 3.11 release and then lots of Git commits, but nothing that officially says "3.11.10". Or at least that's what it seems to me after all my research. Since I know that 3.11.10-200 is working, and 3.12.9-201 (but maybe not 3.12.1-xxx e.g.) is broken, it seems to me that I would have to bisect vanilla 3.11 with vanilla 3.13 (note: NOT 3.12!). That's a lot of extra bisecting! I can reproduce the crash nearly every night just by going to sleep and waiting for 5-6am to roll around, but then all my services are down until I wake up and hit reset, so bisecting/testing/bisecting... will take forever and a lot of hardship to me and others who rely on my services. If anyone can correct any incorrect assumptions above, and so make the path easier for me, please do so! If anyone has a better understanding of bisecting in relation to distros, please explain. Delving into this much deeper than I ever wanted to, it appears to me to be really messed up that no one bridges the divide between Git and distros for the purposes of bisecting. Surely I'm not (once again) the 0.000001% of Linux users that needs to do something like this?

Non-permanent, but worth considering, especially if you'd like to 'coddle' your respondents over to your new email address: Ask your current ISP how much they charge to keep your current email address 'alive', while you 'sleep' your other network services subscription 'for a while'. The ones I am familiar with range from a coupla bux or so .. commonly $5/month. You should then, at least, be able to access the Old stuff via WebMail. They can direct you to their help pages on how use your favourite browser to work that kind of email. I don't happen to like WebMail much. So I would also ask ISP if they allow you to make POP connections from outside their network. If that goes well, then you want them to tell you how 'secure' your login authentication will be. Some POP logins still send parts of your login info 'in the clear' - leaving you as easy pickins for man-in-the-middle sniffers. If you like their security, then you can run an email client like Thunderbird. It can be set to fetch from more than one host, to common inbox, or to separate folder hierarchies. If you elect to run an email client on more than one station, no matter the client, I would suggest you find the checkbox called "Leave mail on server", and do that on ALL clients. This allows a wide window of time for you to fetch on each machine; with none of them doing their fetching, then telling the upstream email server "I'm the boss of all this email, and I've got my copy of it all, so Delete everything up 'til Now." Should even one client be set to NOT leave mail on server, your other stations will not be able to be synch'd - they would be missing certain emails, deleted by the bossy station on its last fetch. These methods can buy you time to study your various options in committing to a long-term 'permanent' email address. Once you've established the New email address, make sure to set your ReplyTo when using the Old email - set it to refer to the New addy. Separately (again, once a new addy is established), you can also ask your Old ISP if they can work the old, tried&true .forward ("dot forward"), where Old-addressed email continues to 'arrive' at your Old email host, but is re-directed to whatever you've set up as your New email. These approaches can be helpful during the transition to a new email, and will allow you numerous opportunities to nudge your respondents to update their address books. Most people need more than a few proddings to actually go into their own addressbook, and edit/update their entry on You. After 'enough' attempts, some will still just go into their existing emails From you, and do a Reply, because .. well .. just because people are like that. Your clever setting of the New ReplyTo will eventually be 'in' the old emails they will reach for, and that's the best we can do, for folks like that. 1U Dells available.

ComplexGames is moving back downtown and has some 1U dell's they'd really like to not move. They have PE850's ($75) and PE860's ($100) and they should even have the rails with them (at least that's what I remembered when I last saw them). They probably won't come with the gray Dell cover bezel (I don't remember seeing them last I was there). The PE850s (and the 860 with the Xeon 3060) are most likely SATA disks and the 860's most likely SAS disks (though SATA 'should be compatible' if the drive has the same part positioning on the drive carrier). permanent email address

I was going to switch internet providers recently, then I realized that I would have to change my email address and notify dozens or hundreds of people. Is there a [cheap] way to get a permanent email address? I seem to recall getting a .mb address in the early days of internet. I then used a university address and subsequently used an email address from providers. Is there a way to look up this old email address (if it exists?) OpenSSL again: update now

Obviously OpenSSL is getting the royal treatment of scrutiny now... these two bugs were fixed this week, and both are potentially very nasty. http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2014-0195 could allow remote arbitrary code execution in a default setup http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2014-0224 was considered bad enough by the Fedora people to issue a separate warning statement (they almost never do that), though it depends on both sides using OpenSSL, which would be rare-ish in the browser world dominated by FF, Chrome, IE, etc, under normal use cases Don't forget to restart your httpd (and every other "d" that uses OpenSSL) after updating!
