NFS problems

I'm trying to get FreeNAS (based on FreeBSD) to serve up NFS shares. It keep failing with nfsd: Can't bind to tcp addr *: Address already in use Which doesn't make sense. I tried binding to a specific address (the IP address of this server) and I get the same message, but with the IP address instead of *. No other services are running on this server, other than http (80). Where do I start? Thanks, Kevin

Internet Service Providers

Shaw keeps incrementally increasing my grandfathered service. It was $65 in early 2017. I just use internet and I'm now paying $75 for Internet 15 which is 15 down and something like 2 or 3 up. Providers are mentioned in our discussions. Can I get your recommendations please?

Hard drive failure - turned out to be an SSD

Hey guys, When my friend game me his failed hd it is an SSD. System sees it but can't open See attached video for the sound it is making. Hope 16GB isn't too big. I know odds are low but just have to ask if anyone has any ideas. Freezing SSDs is not a thing correct? Sure sounds like moving parts to me. Never troubleshot an SSD before. Thanks,Frank

Looking for short term contractor

Hi, I'm going on 3 weeks holidays in August, and my boss wants me to find an emergency contractor in case all the systems decide to go belly up while I'm gone. This contractor would only be called in case of emergencies. Normally, I'd pass the IT stuff onto someone in-house, but there's no one here that knows what's going on since my backup guy left. This is what we run: * Proxmox 5.2 * Synology NAS servers (NFS) * Various Linux VM's * A couple of Windows VM's * Univention Corporate Server (for Active Directory) * BackupPC for daily backups Basically, if things fail, it's just getting the Proxmox Servers running again and restoring VM images from backup. Possibly restoring more recent data from BackupPC. Gerald

Mail server config on Ubuntu (Postfix?)

I'm trying to configure Postfix on Ubuntu 18.04LTS. It's working, in the basic sense, but not doing everything I want. I've read some of the config help and examples, but I'm still not clear on what to do. For each Ubuntu server I manage, I'd like these to work: user1@ubuntu:~$ mail -s "Test" user2 <message-body user1@ubuntu:~$ mail -s "Test" user2@ubuntu <message-body user1@ubuntu:~$ mail -s "Test" user2(a)ubuntu.mydomainname <message-body user1@ubuntu:~$ mail -s "Test" user3@myotherdomainname <message-body I hope that's clear. Or mail -s "Test" jdoe mail -s "Test" jdoe@server678 mail -s "Test" jdoe(a)server678.domain1.org ...which would all deliver email locally to this server (server678) and the last one would be for mail which is destined for any other user NOT on this server but in domain2 (domain1 and domain2 are both internal workplace domains), and which will have to go through a relay host to get anywhere: mail -s "Test" santa394(a)domain2.org I don't know if I've made myself clear. Ask questions and I'll try to clarify what I want. Kevin

MUUG Meeting, June 12, 7:30pm -- Perl PDF::Reuse, RTFM: Pioneer

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 12. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Perl PDF::Reuse Brad Vokey will give a brief demonstration of how to mass produce similar (but not identical) PDF documents in Perl by re-using a starting PDF file as a template. Perl::Reuse is very fast, and gives you the capacity to produce many PDF pages per second creating very big PDF documents if necessary. RTFM: Pioneer Pioneer - A game of lonely space adventure - will be demonstrated by Trevor Cordes. Not just a game, Pioneer is a full-blown space simulator with realistic Newtonian physics. After you figure out how to not crash into planets or over-shoot space stations by mega-kms; explore the planets and other star systems, work as a trader to make a few bucks, or arm up and become a pirate or assassin. Beautiful spacescapes make this a demo worth seeing! The group holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) PHP method never returning?

I'm debugging someone else's php code that is heavily OO. They have an object, in it a method that calls another method on another object. Pretty normal stuff: class U_Controller extends Controller { public function add_p($id) { ... error_log("a"); $i->save(); error_log("b"); } When it runs I get "a" in the logs, but *never* "b"!! I'm really stumped. I'm pretty sure it's not calling exit() or die() or any other halting statement as I put some hooks and debugs in and it's clearly exiting out the bottom of the file as it should. The save() call seems to complete ok as I've put debugs into it and I can see it running and finishing. However, it is complicated by the fact that this code is a nightmare and save() seems to re-call itself through convoluted OO calls with cycles. But again, it all seems to exit out the bottom as it should. How can this possibly occur? What other way can a function or object skip out of itself like that without running that log "b"? Note: the above is actually in a try/catch block but I put debugs in the catch and they don't seem to be running, so I don't think that's it either? It's like there's a "return2steps" or "call-this-method-again-and-ignore- the-first-invocation" or something going on. Or I'm missing something obvious because I never use OO/framework-heavy code like this. (P.S. framework appears to be Bootstrap.)

PGP/GPG broken for email (S/MIME)

Newly announced flaw in PGP/GPG when used for email that lets remote hackers get copies of your encrypted emails (whether sender or recipient). Many (most?) email clients (MUAs) are not patched yet (but the Linux ones should be shortly). The encryption itself isn't broken, it's the way email clients and their html parsers work that is being abused. For the hack to work you have to use a vulnerable email client that has builtin html support (most do, but mine doesn't, yay!) and the attacker has to intercept an encrypted email for/from you and then send it to you wrapped in some naughty html. Your email client then decrypts the email and the naughty html promptly sends a copy to the attacker via backchannels (getvars or similar in img tags hitting hacker servers). To be clear, they can only use this hack to read emails they've already intercepted and tricked you into opening in your HTML MUA. If you use GPG from the command line you're basically safe. It's still good encryption (with a caveat about integrity checks that won't affect most use cases). GPG used for package signing, etc, is still safe. GPG used for local file encryption is safe. To be safe for email, update your MUA when it patches this, and ensure all your contacts you PGP/GPG with do the same. Unlike Spectre et al, this one is fairly easy to fix assuming most people do it in a reasonable amount of time (ya, I know). Strangely, EFF recommends people phase our PGP/GPG email and have no real recommended drop-in replacement. I find this odd, as to me *some* emails being hackable certainly beats *all* emails being hackable (i.e. plaintext) which is basically what they are advocating. Oh ya, this all could have been avoided if people stopped using HTML in emails and HTML-capable MUAs. <GRIN>
