GPS rollover event coming up - are your NTP servers ready?

So I just became aware of this… https://spectracom.com/resources/blog/lisa-perdue/2018/gps-2019-week-rollov… � Bottom line: on April 6th, 2019, your GPS receiver might start spitting out the wrong time. It’s a Y2K-style problem, the article describes the details. Make sure your firmware is updated and will handle this even properly, and/or your NTP software will correctly compensate for the crazy time the GPS receiver will start spitting out. � -Adam

JBOD card recommendations?

Anyone have recommendations on a model of JBOD SAS/SATA card to add to a Linux based NAS? Not looking for any hardware RAID capabilities, but if it's a RAID card with JBOD mode that's fine too. Also needs to have internal connectors as they're all internal drives. -- Wyatt Zacharias

MUUG Meeting, Sept 11, 7:30pm -- Ansible, RTFM: tcpdump

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 11. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Managing Systems with Ansible Ansible is an OSS IT automation engine, in the vein of Chef and Puppet. But what exactly can you do with it? John Gunkel will be filling us in. He'll be covering key concepts, package management, templates, roles, GUI interfaces, and more! A demo will bring it all together. RTFM: tcpdump(1) with Adam Thompson Debugging an application's behaviour is sometimes easier to do by looking at the interactions it has with other systems on the network than by examining the application itself. Modern UNIXes all come with a tool, tcpdump(1), that can examine, filter, decode, and log all the traffic seen at a network interface - whether it originates on that system or not. Adam will discuss the most common options for [12]tcpdump(1), and hopefully demonstrate a simple example. The group holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) NFS problems

I'm trying to get FreeNAS (based on FreeBSD) to serve up NFS shares. It keep failing with nfsd: Can't bind to tcp addr *: Address already in use Which doesn't make sense. I tried binding to a specific address (the IP address of this server) and I get the same message, but with the IP address instead of *. No other services are running on this server, other than http (80). Where do I start? Thanks, Kevin

Internet Service Providers

Shaw keeps incrementally increasing my grandfathered service. It was $65 in early 2017. I just use internet and I'm now paying $75 for Internet 15 which is 15 down and something like 2 or 3 up. Providers are mentioned in our discussions. Can I get your recommendations please?

Hard drive failure - turned out to be an SSD

Hey guys, When my friend game me his failed hd it is an SSD. System sees it but can't open See attached video for the sound it is making. Hope 16GB isn't too big. I know odds are low but just have to ask if anyone has any ideas. Freezing SSDs is not a thing correct? Sure sounds like moving parts to me. Never troubleshot an SSD before. Thanks,Frank
