PHP method never returning?

I'm debugging someone else's php code that is heavily OO. They have an object, in it a method that calls another method on another object. Pretty normal stuff: class U_Controller extends Controller { public function add_p($id) { ... error_log("a"); $i->save(); error_log("b"); } When it runs I get "a" in the logs, but *never* "b"!! I'm really stumped. I'm pretty sure it's not calling exit() or die() or any other halting statement as I put some hooks and debugs in and it's clearly exiting out the bottom of the file as it should. The save() call seems to complete ok as I've put debugs into it and I can see it running and finishing. However, it is complicated by the fact that this code is a nightmare and save() seems to re-call itself through convoluted OO calls with cycles. But again, it all seems to exit out the bottom as it should. How can this possibly occur? What other way can a function or object skip out of itself like that without running that log "b"? Note: the above is actually in a try/catch block but I put debugs in the catch and they don't seem to be running, so I don't think that's it either? It's like there's a "return2steps" or "call-this-method-again-and-ignore- the-first-invocation" or something going on. Or I'm missing something obvious because I never use OO/framework-heavy code like this. (P.S. framework appears to be Bootstrap.)

PGP/GPG broken for email (S/MIME)

Newly announced flaw in PGP/GPG when used for email that lets remote hackers get copies of your encrypted emails (whether sender or recipient). Many (most?) email clients (MUAs) are not patched yet (but the Linux ones should be shortly). The encryption itself isn't broken, it's the way email clients and their html parsers work that is being abused. For the hack to work you have to use a vulnerable email client that has builtin html support (most do, but mine doesn't, yay!) and the attacker has to intercept an encrypted email for/from you and then send it to you wrapped in some naughty html. Your email client then decrypts the email and the naughty html promptly sends a copy to the attacker via backchannels (getvars or similar in img tags hitting hacker servers). To be clear, they can only use this hack to read emails they've already intercepted and tricked you into opening in your HTML MUA. If you use GPG from the command line you're basically safe. It's still good encryption (with a caveat about integrity checks that won't affect most use cases). GPG used for package signing, etc, is still safe. GPG used for local file encryption is safe. To be safe for email, update your MUA when it patches this, and ensure all your contacts you PGP/GPG with do the same. Unlike Spectre et al, this one is fairly easy to fix assuming most people do it in a reasonable amount of time (ya, I know). Strangely, EFF recommends people phase our PGP/GPG email and have no real recommended drop-in replacement. I find this odd, as to me *some* emails being hackable certainly beats *all* emails being hackable (i.e. plaintext) which is basically what they are advocating. Oh ya, this all could have been avoided if people stopped using HTML in emails and HTML-capable MUAs. <GRIN>

Garbled boot screen

This just came up. A system I have at home had been booting FreeNAS (FreeBSD-based) fine, but I powered it down for a while. Now when I turn it on, the BIOS boot screen is fine, the GRUB boot selection screen is fine, but when it starts to boot the OS the screen goes all garbled. I can sort of make out some text, but it's generally unreadable. Any ideas? Also, is there a way to include picture attachments in mails to Roundtable? I thought I'd tried before and the picture was removed. I have a screenshot of the image I get while booting. It might help to see it. Kevin

recommendations for 4k video card under Linux

Hi. Does anyone on the list have experience and recommendations on how to support a 4k monitor under Linux? We want to use a single Dell 27" 4k monitor (P2715Q) with a CentOS 7 system. What would be a good choice for a PCIe x16 video card, preferably with DisplayPort output, that can support 4k@60 Hz and has good driver support under X.org - hopefully without having to resort to 3rd party pre-compiled, version-specific binary kernel modules? If we can keep the price for the card below $200-$300 that would be great. Unfortunately my Google searches this morning for this have had a pretty low signal to noise ratio. Mostly people having problems with nVidia drivers. Possibly relevant h/w info: ASUS M5A78L-Mlx+ motherboard and AMD FX-6350 CPU. Power supply has a spare 6-pin (3x2) PCI-E power connector for cards that require a dedicated power connection. Thanks for any advice. Gilles -- Gilles R. MUUG Meeting, May 8, 7:30pm -- LISA Review and Intro to Docker, systat

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 8. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: LISA Review and Intro to Docker Katherine Scrupa will summarize her experience from the training portion of the 31st annual Large Installation System Administration conference. The training section had a devops-heavy focus, including Docker, Golang, PostgreSQL, Git, tuning, and CI/CD. Katherine will also give a beginner-level demonstration of Docker containers. RTFM: systat UNIX systems in the 1990s routinely came with terminal-based system performance-monitoring tools. Linux and FreeBSD unfortunately did not continue this tradition with the exception of [44]top(1). OpenBSD has had standard system monitoring tools since inception, but in 1995 they added systat(1), a full-screen system monitor designed to run on the console or in a terminal. Adam will demonstrate the use of systat(1) and describe some of the interesting details it displays that are still difficult to get today on other systems. The group holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Out of Disk Space

My main os is partitioned for 89GB which has typically been plenty in the past.Running KDE Neon stable It was out of space and locking up so I booted into another partition and ran baobab against it. It says 65 GB is the size of home but the graphic and detailed list don't show the whole picture. Only about 6GB. Any ideas? Thanks,Frank
