opening an eMac

Can anyone tell me what tools can be used to open an eMac safely? No, I don't think a sledge hammer would be wise, though I'm tempted! And does anyone know if an eMac can be upgraded to USB 2 from 1.1 ? This is to connect an external hard drive.

Linux on WRT54G

Further to the topic of installing Linux on the WRT54 series of Linksys devices; Linksys has a relatively new device, the WRTSL54GS. Basically its the old WRT54GS PLUS a USB port! And yes there is a OpenWRT available for it. No more storage limitations; just plug a USB hard drive in or other USB type storage and you're off ! For those wanting to run Asterisk on it you now have room for voicemail. John

beagle-build-in core 5

There is no man file for something called beagle-build-in in Fedora core 5. According to top, this thing takes up 70% of my cpu time when it runs and it runs a long time. Anyone have any idea what beagle-build-in does? It runs the heck out of my hard drive and I don't like that at all, especially since I've just had to replace the hard drive due to that BadCRC problem I wrote about a couple weeks back. Any advice would be most welcome.

Just installed Fedora 5 - Want to install MPlayer

Some good things and some not so good things. Over all I'm not impressed, but there aren't enough problems (yet) to justify my going back to Fedora 2. Anyhow... I just recompiled MPlayer and at first it didn't like the compiler. I told it not to check the compiler and there was an error near the end of the "make" step. I did a quick check of the MPlayer site and it seems they've moved over to a new machine (without saying where it is). I still have a copy of Pre-7 from before. Has anybody been able to install/compile it for Fedora 5? If so, how? Is there anything newer than Pre-7? Have the codecs been updated? Is there indeed a new site or was I hallucinating as a result of being up until 4:00am the previous night? Do I have to go and get the binary rpm? I'll ask again at the meeting on Tuesday. Alternatively, if I get it working I'll tell everybody how (if someone reminds me). I got it sorted out -- at least the compile/install process. I haven't tried the module itself yet. It turns out that the compile step (the first call to apxs2) ends up putting the .so module into ./.libs! This is the default for libtool, so that would be fine, except for some reason the next call to apxs2 (and libtool, indirectly) doesn't look there. Weird. So, I ran 'make' once to produce the .so, then moved the file manually from .libs to the current directory, then ran 'make' again, which completed the process. Also, I had to revert to gcc-3.4 from the gcc-4.0, which produced errors in addition to many warnings about signedness mismatches. Thanks to Sean and Stuart for the help! Apache2 modules

I'm trying to compile the mod_ntlm2 module, and it's failing to produce the mod_ntlm.so but I can't figure out precisely why. Does anyone have any suggestions? MUUG Meeting, June 13, 7:30pm -- Agile Software Development Env.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 13. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Agile Software Development Environment Specialized and robust tools for Java development are available to the Open Source community for everything from source code control, to document management, to running your finished application. Weaving all these components together on a central development server for team of developers can be a challenge. These frequently overlooked components in the development environment can make or break your project. Where do you keep the information everyone needs to see? Who is responsible for maintaining it? How do you know if code you just committed to the repository has impacted someone else's? You are writing JUnit tests, but how much of your project's code is actually being tested? With the focus on developer productivity, how can you address all of these questions without adding to the burden of just getting code written? In this presentation, Steve Moffat will show us how one project is doing it. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Core 5 DMA errors

I'm getting weird DMA errors on my Fedora Core 5 computer. The motherboard is an ASRock P4VM800 with 512MB DDR Celeron 2533 MHz Model 4 hard drive is a Hitachi 7K80 7200 rpm parallel-ATA 80 Gig. Fedora is installed on /dev/hda7 9.4 Gig partition ext3 The DMA error message shows up during big file, or multiple file, copying from one directory to another, and during bootup. dmesg shows this message: cd ..hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriverStatus Error BadCCR } ide: failed opcode was: unknown Sometimes the error message shows up at one point in the boot process, sometimes in another. During really big copies, the DMA error message is quite frequent. I also have XP, 98SE, and Slackware on the machine but so far none of them have this error, or maybe they're not telling. Can anyone tell me how to deal with this problem?

Thanks very much for the help. I read the article and checked the IDE cables as instructed, and found a loose connection. I've booted Fedora a couple times with no error messages showing, so maybe it was the loose IDE cable connection. I hope so because I can't remember where I bought the hard drive and I can't find any sales slips for it. Bad Moon is Rising. Yuk! That was the first tune I had to learn on guitar over 30 years ago and I still can't listen to it without cringing. Yuk.
