MUUG Online Meeting, Tuesday, Feb 7, 7:30pm (Date Change) -- CheckMK

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting online, on Tuesday, February 7th, at 7:30pm. Yes, that's a week early, i.e. the FIRST Tuesday of the month... CheckMK Alberto Abrao will present CheckMK, a great platform for monitoring various IT infrastructure components. It has powerful tools to monitor all different kinds of devices that comprises a regular Enterprise IT environment. Agents are available for Linux, *nix (AIX, Solaris), *BSD, Windows, VMware, AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, among others. These can be easily enhanced with plug-ins for custom functionality. It also allows for the monitoring of devices that support SNMP. Easy to get started with, but packed with features and infinitely customizable, CheckMK is an excellent choice for the monitoring of any IT environment. *Date Change* Please note the change in meeting date for this month, and for the rest of the current year (at least until the July/August break). We are now meeting on the first Tuesday of each month. This will once again be an online meeting. Worst. Keyboard Layout. Ever.

I saw this on another forum. A hospital somewhere in the US ordered a dozen HP laptops for some physicians and nurses. When they arrived, they discovered the "Power On/Off" button is shaped like just another keyboard key and is located in the top row. Immediately to the left of the Delete Key. And just above the Backspace key. And Insert? It's the fifth key to the left of Delete, on the F10 key. To its right are F11 (which also has a glyph of a jet aircraft on it), F12/Dual Screen Mode, Prt Scr, the aforementioned Power Off button, and Delete. The person who posted the message says the Power button instantly shuts down the system when it's pressed, although I suspect this functionality can be changed in Windows. However, it's the only power button on the device so they can't simply disable it. Who the hell designs this crap?

Fastmail observations

I switched my main e-mail infrastructure to Fastmail in Sep 2022, and I just want to show you folks how visually elegant the nested quoting that we do in MUUG RoundTable looks in Fastmail: Another example (truncated at the top): Those long vertical braces and the different background colours (based on nesting depth) really add to the elegance. I've seen about 4 different colours in deep nesting. Also, the very thing that drove me to Fastmail (from Gmail) was the fact that Fastmail (like Gmail) is a true implementation of labels (vs folders). Two of their key people are in fact the primary people behind the JMAP initiative, with an IETF track, intended to supplant IMAP. Fastmail's cloud is running on Cyrus JMAP servers. Hartmut

Help and Documentation System Development

I am looking at alternatives to the Adobe Robohelp help/documentation system development software. Are there any recommendations over the many open source packages that exist? I have looked briefly at Sphinx. Has anyone got any experience with this package? Many thanks in advance for your suggestions and comments. Regards Brock

Need to borrow a SCSI Controller

Hello everyone, I know many of us like to use and keep older hardware, so I am hoping someone is able to assist me. I need to access some older tapes (Ultrium 2). I found the tape driver for it, and the SCSI cable. Now, I am looking for a SCSI Controller and a Terminator. My plan is to transfer all tapes to a different one that uses a newer tape standard. Would anyone have one or both of these parts, and would be willing to let me borrow them? It'd be much appreciated. Thank you. Kind regards, Alberto Abrao

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting online, on Tuesday, January 10th, at 7:30pm: The Taming of journald Continues In his last presentation, Trevor Cordes showed us how to use syslog with journald, and filter out unwanted log lines. However, those bazillion unwanted lines being filtered out are still being written to disk, causing major wear and tear on your precious, limited-life SSD! In this follow-up presentation, Trevor will discuss minimizing SSD writes and wasted space by using the journald RAMdisk and size-limiting options. RTFM: nmap(1) Wyatt Zacharias will give a quick overview of some of the basic features of nmap. This will once again be an online meeting. weird samba ACLs from MS Office

Have samba (4.16) sharing some linux drives to Windows. Want things pretty simple where files on the share are all forced into certain user, gorup, mode: force create mode = 0660 force directory mode = 02770 force user = samba Everything works great. The files get created like this: -rw-rw---- 1 samba samba 0 Jan 4 01:01 test-file.txt ... With every app except MS Office. MS Office insists on making some fubar ACL: -rw-rwx---+ 1 samba samba 50510 Jan 4 01:13 test-excel.csv* #getfacl test-excel.csv # file: test-excel.csv # owner: samba # group: samba user::rw- user:samba:rw- group::rw- group:samba:rw- mask::rwx other::--- Looks like the same thing, eh? But that ACL screws up linus backups as it is stopping a user who is in group samba from reading the file!!?!?? But I don't even want to solve that riddle (because they should be able to read it), I just want to force samba to not let (or just ignore) Office make an ACL in the first place. I don't want any files where ls says "+" in the mode! I swear this didn't use to happen. Might have been years ago, though. All the samba ACL options seem to be to get "more" ACLs. I want less! None! But I don't want to mount the linux fs itself with ACLs off. I just want to force samba to force Office to not be insane. Anyone know the magic for this?
