Found via Slashdot: Flights into the Dallas area are being forced to take older, cumbersome routes and a runway at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was temporarily closed after aviation authorities said GPS signals there aren't reliable <https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-18/faa-warns-airline-pilots…>. The Federal Aviation Administration said in an emailed statement Tuesday it's investigating the possible jamming of the global-positioning system that aircraft increasingly use to guide them on more efficient routes and to runways. So far, the agency has found "no evidence of intentional interference," it said. American Airlines, the primary carrier at DFW, said the GPS issue is not affecting its operations. Southwest Airlines, which flies from nearby Love Field, said it also isn't experiencing any disruptions. The FAA reopened the closed runway earlier on Tuesday. The GPS problem -- despite the lack of impact -- highlights the risk of widespread reliance on the weak GPS radio signals from space used for everything from timing stock trades to guiding jetliners. The FAA occasionally warns pilots in advance of military testing that may degrade the GPS signals and pilots sometimes report short-lived problems, but the interference in Dallas is atypical, said Dan Streufert, founder of the flight-tracking website ADSBexchange.com. "In the US, it's very unusual to see this without a prior notice," Streufert said in an interview. ADSBExchange.com monitors aircraft data streams that indicate the accuracy of the GPS signals they are receiving and the website began seeing problems around Dallas on Monday, he said. The military has told the FAA it isn't conducting any operations that would interfere with GPS in that area, said a person familiar with the situation who wasn't authorized to speak publicly about it. The primary way FAA's air-traffic system tracks planes is based on GPS, but older radars and radio-direction beacons have remained in place as backups. A reminder that the MUUG online meeting will be on BBB this evening... The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting online, on Tuesday, October 18th, at 7:30pm: Tracking Aircraft with an RTL-SDR and a RaspberryPi Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast, or ADS-B, is a modern aircraft safety system that broadcasts an aircraft's identification and position data to other aircraft and ground stations. Using an off-the-shelf RTL-SDR receiver and a RaspberryPi, we can decode these messages to track aircraft in our vicinity. Wyatt will show how to install the dump1090 software used to decode the messages, and the different third-party aggregation sites that collect ADS-B information to provide real-time flight tracking around the world. This will once again be an online meeting. Stay tuned to our muug.ca home page for the official URL, which will be made available about a half hour before the meeting starts. Fighting the PHPower with rsyslog Help! The new PHP8 has made normal, everyday scripting practices an error on screen or in the logfiles. Fight the power and reclaim your PHP sanity using rsyslog and its filtering options. But beware, rsyslog itself is a minefield of inexplicableness. Trevor Cordes will lead you on a quick and easy path to victory over PHP, and any other daemon you may disagree with! Bpytop - a Python port and continuation of bashtop(1) This month Brad Vokey will give us a quick demonstration of byptop. Bpytop is a colorful, efficient, responsive, terminal resource monitor that shows usage and stats for your processor, memory, disks, network and processes. Written in Python by the original author of bashtop, the author claims it is faster and much better supported. Add some bling to your original old top(1) command! Oh joy, Spectre is back. New kernels are out to fix the new retbleed. Retbleed preys upon the fix for Spectre-2 that we all had fun with a few years ago. Some people thought the retpoline wasn't enough of a fix and that returns could also be a target for these gadget & sidechannel attacks. Turns out they were right. Unlike past vulns that were only, or worse, on Intel, this one is slightly worse on AMD. Anyhow, early numbers predict a 12-25% slowdown of your box once you update and reboot. Joy indeed! BGP data in real time?

Does anyone know of a good way for monitoring BGP route data in near real-time? There are several public BGPPlay sites out there but the data seems delayed? That being said, one challenge I'm having with the sites is the time stamps don't say which timezone they are in. I assume it is UTC but if that is the case then the data is at least a couple hours old on any of the sites I've found. John
