IBM "clicky" keyboards

Enough people have wondered/asked/complained to me about this that I'm posting this now as a public service. IBM Model "M" keyboards are still available, *NEW*, today. They are expensive, but they are the original design that you can use as a melee weapon. The catch is that they don't say "IBM" or even "Lexmark" on them. They are available for purchase from the manufacturer, Unicomp, who can be found online at http://www.pckeyboard.com/. You can also find some vintage NIB units from time to time at http://www.clickykeyboards.com/. There are also a number of other manufacturers now making similar, but not quite as good, keyboards. - CVT Inc., the maker of the Avant Stellar (I own two of them), which is the direct descendant of the Northgate Omnikey, seems to have restructured and no trace of their keyboard manufacturing operation can be found online. However, Northgate keyboards are still available new-in-box from (this is a horrible site, beware) http://www.northgate-keyboard-repair.com/. - The Happy Hacking keyboard (now owned by Fujitsu, apparently) is equally comforting to some people despite having a totally different feel. They, and many others, can be had from http://www.elitekeyboards.com/ - Das Keyboard - Anything using Cherry MX Green, Blue, or White keyswitches. The "green" switches apparently are the closest anyone's come yet to emulating the IBM/Lexmark/Unicomp switches... and they can be had in MUCH cheaper keyboards, like the Rosewill RK-9000 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201040 and http://techreport.com/review/23405/rosewill-rk-9000-series-mechanical-ke yboards-reviewed). - And there are an increasing number (yes, again, after the big die-off ca. 2009) of speciality manufacturers of "ergonomic" keyboards that are making clicky keyswitches available as an option. One of the better ones is a tiny shop in Ontario, but I can't find the name right now. SpamAssassin false positives on DATE_IN_FUTURE_96_Q?

I mentioned this problem at the last round-table session, but didn't get a solution, so I thought I'd post it here, just in case anyone has any suggestions to offer. I'm still seeing a whole bunch of false positives in SpamAssassin, since an update was installed in mid-September on a CentOS 5.7 system, for a rule called DATE_IN_FUTURE_96_Q, which is only supposed to be triggered when the "Date:" header has a date that is 4 days to 4 month ahead of the date in the "Received" header that has the _smallest_ difference in date. Here are the headers from the latest e-mail I've received with this false-positive. (I've stripped out irrelevant headers, for the sake of clarity and simplicity.) big scanner

Does anyone have big (like tabloid or bigger) scanner they want to sell? Even an ancient SCSI or parallel one might be ok. I just want *big*. Do they even make scanners bigger than legal or tabloid?

Non-permanent, but worth considering, especially if you'd like to 'coddle' your respondents over to your new email address: Ask your current ISP how much they charge to keep your current email address 'alive', while you 'sleep' your other network services subscription 'for a while'. The ones I am familiar with range from a coupla bux or so .. commonly $5/month. You should then, at least, be able to access the Old stuff via WebMail. They can direct you to their help pages on how use your favourite browser to work that kind of email. I don't happen to like WebMail much. So I would also ask ISP if they allow you to make POP connections from outside their network. If that goes well, then you want them to tell you how 'secure' your login authentication will be. Some POP logins still send parts of your login info 'in the clear' - leaving you as easy pickins for man-in-the-middle sniffers. If you like their security, then you can run an email client like Thunderbird. It can be set to fetch from more than one host, to common inbox, or to separate folder hierarchies. If you elect to run an email client on more than one station, no matter the client, I would suggest you find the checkbox called "Leave mail on server", and do that on ALL clients. This allows a wide window of time for you to fetch on each machine; with none of them doing their fetching, then telling the upstream email server "I'm the boss of all this email, and I've got my copy of it all, so Delete everything up 'til Now." Should even one client be set to NOT leave mail on server, your other stations will not be able to be synch'd - they would be missing certain emails, deleted by the bossy station on its last fetch. These methods can buy you time to study your various options in committing to a long-term 'permanent' email address. Once you've established the New email address, make sure to set your ReplyTo when using the Old email - set it to refer to the New addy. Separately (again, once a new addy is established), you can also ask your Old ISP if they can work the old, tried&true .forward ("dot forward"), where Old-addressed email continues to 'arrive' at your Old email host, but is re-directed to whatever you've set up as your New email. These approaches can be helpful during the transition to a new email, and will allow you numerous opportunities to nudge your respondents to update their address books. Most people need more than a few proddings to actually go into their own addressbook, and edit/update their entry on You. After 'enough' attempts, some will still just go into their existing emails From you, and do a Reply, because .. well .. just because people are like that. Your clever setting of the New ReplyTo will eventually be 'in' the old emails they will reach for, and that's the best we can do, for folks like that. 1U Dells available.

ComplexGames is moving back downtown and has some 1U dell's they'd really like to not move. They have PE850's ($75) and PE860's ($100) and they should even have the rails with them (at least that's what I remembered when I last saw them). They probably won't come with the gray Dell cover bezel (I don't remember seeing them last I was there). The PE850s (and the 860 with the Xeon 3060) are most likely SATA disks and the 860's most likely SAS disks (though SATA 'should be compatible' if the drive has the same part positioning on the drive carrier). permanent email address

I was going to switch internet providers recently, then I realized that I would have to change my email address and notify dozens or hundreds of people. Is there a [cheap] way to get a permanent email address? I seem to recall getting a .mb address in the early days of internet. I then used a university address and subsequently used an email address from providers. Is there a way to look up this old email address (if it exists?)
