Hey knowledgeable geek people:
Where's a good place to get replacement UPS batteries? I need 1 or 2 12V 9Ah batteries. Is there any place open on the weekend that sells these?
Kevin
Battery man on St James sells them. Prices seemed reasonable.
They're open Saturday but not Sunday. Hey knowledgeable geek people:

I've gone through a lot of UPS batteries for myself and customers, and I've bought a lot at Battery Man et al and a lot of APC branded ones I get through distribution. I can unequivocally say that the APC ones are worth the extra money (usually 20-30% more). The local ones never last more than 2-ish years and the APC ones usually last 3-4, in the exact same UPS unit in the same location (heat, etc)!
BTW, heat is the #1 killer of batteries, so keep your UPS cool! The SmartUPS units with fans (and smart charging) are the best.
On a related note, a friend at work bought a replacement battery for his, new. The battery wasn't the problem though, so he replaced his UPS and now has the battery up on Kijiji.
Cheers, Tim

A bit late to the table here, but I've also purchased replacement batteries from upsforless.ca; even after shipping, they were cheaper than local. However, I now have two dead UPSes... I'm unsure whether it was batteries or dead UPS electronics that did them in. I suspect electronics, as neither of them will even perform the self-test when power is applied. -Adam

Funny timing ... I bought two APC 750 units just over a year ago and use them to keep my servers running in the rack.
A week or so ago, one of them started to complain (beeping wildly in the night) and flashing it's lights etc ...
After emailing the APC support, they go through their usual spiel etc ... but in the end, just unplugging the unit and turning it off (also shutting down all the servers fed by it) ... and plugging it back in, did the trick ... the electronics needed to be "reset" ... not sure what caused it yet, but me thinks I'm putting the UPS monitoring software on one of the boxes and trending it now ...
What a hassle ... especially when you're running a VM box behind it etc ... would have been nice to have dual supplies in it, but oh well ...
Dan.

As much as I love APC, I must say their non-Smart lines are generally complete crap now. They live for 2-6 years then fail in strange, different, and noisy ways, creating support nightmares, even after new batteries are put in.
The Smart ones live a lot longer but can still do incredibly wonky things if the batteries are dying/dead. You will sometimes not get any warning via the software or the UPS even though the batteries are gone. In some cases I open up the UPS to find the batteries bulging to insane widths. Moral of the story is set yourself reminders at 3-4 years to start thinking about pro-active battery replacement and/or load testing (apctest in apcupsd in linux is good for this).
I still haven't found a better UPS brand, so I stick mostly with APC Smart.

We've had several APC Smart UPS'es fail catastrophically and without warning. In one case, a 2200VA unit literally caught on fire!
A bit over a year ago, we bought a CyberPower PR2200LCDRT2U (2170 VA 1600 Watts) rack-mount UPS, which was about half the price of the equivalent unit from APC. So far, it's been fine, but time will tell if it's better than those we've previously bought from APC.
The City of Winnipeg has been using PowerWare (now Eaton) UPSs for quite a while now, and I haven't heard any complaints or experienced any issues (like described by others). All that happens is the little "replace battery" light comes on. See http://powerquality.eaton.com/USA/Default.asp?CX=-999

I've seen 15-20 year old SmartUPS's catch on fire (always the front circuit board). The ones that don't flame up still have heat burn marks on the front circuit board. Must be a design flaw.
The SmartUPS 1500's from 10 years ago until now (once they started being black) are working 100% OK for me at 10 client sites (including my own). Never a failure. Just make sure you replace the batteries as soon as it tells you or it starts failing in weird ways. It's still my UPS of choice.
I'll check out the other brands you guys mention. Eaton is a well known company. Like you said though, it's not until 2-5 years later that you learn your UPS is crap.
Several years ago, when I was being kept awake at night by incessantly beeping/screeching APC Back-UPS XS-800 units (two of them) just because their batteries were near end-of-life (as if I have to be told every 5 minutes 24/7!!!), I did some Internet research on the matter. The APC programming options on these units didn't allow override of this beeping/screeching, but cutting the speaker/squeaker wires sure works!
The primary recommendation at that time for more sensibly programmed (and overrideable) UPS's at the low price-point was CyberPower. I have since then seen CyberPower units attractively priced at tigerdirect.ca many times.
In addition to my two APC Back-UPS XS-800 (800 VA / 540 watt) units (battery model # RBC32), I also have an APC Back-UPS XS-1300 (1300 VA / 780 watt) unit (battery model # RBC109), all with dead batteries. The APC Back-UPS XS-1300 has a nice reddish (LCD/LED?) little rectangular text/graphical screen, and I think the beeping/screeching can be overridden.
Anyone want to buy any or all of these 3 units? They are in mint condition and were working properly before the batteries died.
