Some of us could probably count on our hands the number of binary commands we actually run on a regular basis, but if we look inside we see thousands of installed binaries (2,691 on this editor?s system to be precise). So what the heck are all these and what are they for? Well what better way to find out than dive in head first and pick something at random. In the premiere of the /bin Diving segment, Gilbert Detillieux will randomly select a command from the /bin directory and attempt to learn how to use it. This will be an opportunity for some group participation as we attempt to learn a new command and do something useful with it! Where to find the Meeting: Fortress Software Inc., 350 Keewatin St -- Unit #2 We have a new in-person meeting location now! Brad Vokey has graciously let us use his work office for our next in-person meeting. The meeting room will be open by 7:00 pm, with the actual meeting starting at 7:30 pm. If driving, enter the lot using the most north east entrance and drive around to the south west corner of the building (see route in map detail on poster linked below). You can use any of the free, ample, and safe parking spots that say "reserved" in front of units #1 through #4 before entering unit #2. Bus stops #30814 and #30880 (route 77) are only 150 meters away. The last bus leaves for Polo Park at 10:15 pm and for Garden City at 10:31 pm. Logan Ave. bus routes #19, #26, and #27 are a 600 meter (8 minute) walk to the south. For those unable or preferring not to attend in person, the meeting will also be available online, using BBB as usual. 90's mouse pad wanted (muug)

Does anyone have any new or excellent condition used mouse pad of the style that was ubiqitous in the 80's and 90's? approx 8x10" approx 1/4" thick (!!) cloth top <-- critical rubber bottom I've been poking around and they don't seem to make pads this thick anymore. Plus, most pads now are made of material that aids an optical mouse. My mouse has balls, and thus benefits from the cloth-style top (i.e. not shiny or smooth). If you have one (or 5) you want to get rid of / sell, bring it to the meeting, or let me know if I can come pick it up. I'm willing to pay $10-$25 each depending on the condition. "bouncing" email from cmd line

If have a maildir file with a maildir format email in it. I want to "bounce" it (using mutt's terminology) to another address. By "bounce", I mean have it sent verbatim (with zero changes and zero new headers) to another email address. Only the envelope-to will be new (obviously). I need to be able to see the email exactly as the original user would have seen it, not "attached" or wrapped up in new headers. All from the command line, preferably the actual cmd line, not a TUI like mutt. Mutt can do this with the "b" Bounce command, but I can't figure out a way for mutt to get this single maildir format email imported via the -f option (which needs an mbox). I don't want to kludge/fudge it into mbox. I tried s-nail and sendmail -i piping but both seem to take the input to mean "body" instead of "headers+body"... though maybe I'm missing something with the sendmail invocation? If mutt can do it... surely I can do it from the command line!? Probably a magical sendmail option I'm not aware of...

another box. But I have more questions. When the prompt disappears are you running under X-windows? Or just a virtual console? If it is under X-windows and you are running a font server it is likely that your ipchains is blocking port 7100 or 7200 where the font server usually listens. And, yes, strange things happen if the Xwindows server can't get to the fonts. You might try changing to start up on runlevel 3 if you normally come up under runlevel 5 (Xwindows). MUUG mailing lists are back up

The server upgrade went well and everything should be back to normal. Total server downtime was around 7 hours. The mailing lists took a little longer, about 2 days. The muug.ca server is now running Debian 12 and Mailman 3 (runs the emailing lists). Mailman 3 (mm3) is a complete rewrite and rearchitecture and redesign and there may be some teething pains. You should still be subscribed to the mailing lists you were prior to the upgrade. No further action should be required on your part and you can send emails to the lists as you always have. If you want to poke around the new mm3 web system, you can access the new mm3 web UI here: https://muug.ca/mailman3 You may be able to login to the new interface using your existing email/password. If you cannot, try the "forgot password" option using the email address you are subscribed under. You might also be able to make a new account and tie it to your existing subscriptions by signing up with your subscribed email address and a new username/password. mm3 seems to automatically tie it to your existing subscriptions. If you get really stuck, post your question to the roundtable mailing list, or you can email us at board(a)muug.ca, or myself directly with "MUUG" in the subject. 99.99% of the existing email list archives should be intact. You can access them by clicking "Archives" in the top navbar of the url above. The UI seems a bit quirky, and the import clearly wasn't perfect, so YMMV: we'll see if it behaves better as new emails are sent to the lists. Fly light!, plus Sublime Text Kevin McGregor will provide a gentle introduction to the lighttpd web server. "lighttpd (pronounced lighty) is a secure, fast, compliant, and very flexible web server that has been optimized for high-performance environments. lighttpd uses memory and CPU efficiently and has lower resource use than other popular web servers. Its advanced feature-set (FastCGI, CGI, Auth, Output-Compression, URL-Rewriting and much more) make lighttpd the perfect web server for all systems, small and large." For our mini-presentation of a "desktop app," Brad Vokey will do a quick demonstration of his favourite GUI text editor: Sublime Text - "Text Editing Done Right." Sublime Text is a fast, mature, light weight, beautiful, customizable, expandable, cross-platform, "shareware" text editor.
