Caution! This message was sent from outside the University of Manitoba. Hi, I have some 2-port gigabit NICs and USB keyboards (unused). Will those be appropriate as door prizes? All the software engineering and security and telecom books that could have been good door prizes (were signed by the authors etc) were all given away already. Also, someone is planning to come over this weekend to take all the cables and SSDs, switches, old laptops and desktops and such. But I still have a fair amount of engineering books (from the 1930’s onwards). If any of those are appropriate as door prizes, you can have those as well. You’re welcome to come over and take a look. If your schedule permits, please let me know. Hardware and Engineering books

Hi, I have to get rid of a lot of engineering books (mostly old from 4 generations of engineers), computer tables, desks, couches, about a hundred 500GB, 1TB and 2TB hard drives, about 40 small SSDs, server rack and servers, book shelves, old desktops and laptops, iMacs and cables and so on. Please note that all but one of the systems have OpenBSD on them; not Windows or MacOS. Monitoring network traffic

I'd like to set up something that I can plug into my network that will track network sources, destinations, ports, packet types, etc. and allow me to graph the results. Presumably the network card and port will be in promiscuous mode to capture everything. What software should I be looking at? Free/libre software only, please. Also, what kind of hardware would be needed to support this (CPU, RAM, etc.)? apcupsd systemd /etc/nologin fail

As per my notice at the meeting tonight, here's the solution if you are using apcupsd with a new version of systemd and if it shuts your system down you cannot login after reboot. (Newest systemd 254.16 does not remove /etc/nologin on reboot, and the option to stop apcupsd from creating this file is broken.) It can't hurt to implement this right away even if you won't be using a newer systemd for a long time... this running cannot hurt anything if something has laready removed /etc/nologin. So what the heck are all these and what are they for? Well what better way to find out than dive in head first and pick something at random. In the premiere of the /bin Diving segment, Gilbert Detillieux will randomly select a command from the /bin directory and attempt to learn how to use it. This will be an opportunity for some group participation as we attempt to learn a new command and do something useful with it! Brad Vokey has graciously let us use his work office for our next in-person meeting. The meeting room will be open by 7:00 pm, with the actual meeting starting at 7:30 pm. 90's mouse pad wanted (muug)

Does anyone have any new or excellent condition used mouse pad of the style that was ubiqitous in the 80's and 90's? approx 8x10" approx 1/4" thick (!!) cloth top <-- critical rubber bottom I've been poking around and they don't seem to make pads this thick anymore. Plus, most pads now are made of material that aids an optical mouse. My mouse has balls, and thus benefits from the cloth-style top (i.e. not shiny or smooth). If you have one (or 5) you want to get rid of / sell, bring it to the meeting, or let me know if I can come pick it up. I'm willing to pay $10-$25 each depending on the condition. "bouncing" email from cmd line

If have a maildir file with a maildir format email in it. I want to "bounce" it (using mutt's terminology) to another address. By "bounce", I mean have it sent verbatim (with zero changes and zero new headers) to another email address. Only the envelope-to will be new (obviously). I need to be able to see the email exactly as the original user would have seen it, not "attached" or wrapped up in new headers. All from the command line, preferably the actual cmd line, not a TUI like mutt. Mutt can do this with the "b" Bounce command, but I can't figure out a way for mutt to get this single maildir format email imported via the -f option (which needs an mbox). I don't want to kludge/fudge it into mbox. I tried s-nail and sendmail -i piping but both seem to take the input to mean "body" instead of "headers+body"... though maybe I'm missing something with the sendmail invocation? If mutt can do it... surely I can do it from the command line!? Probably a magical sendmail option I'm not aware of...

another box. But I have more questions. When the prompt disappears are you running under X-windows? Or just a virtual console? If it is under X-windows and you are running a font server it is likely that your ipchains is blocking port 7100 or 7200 where the font server usually listens. And, yes, strange things happen if the Xwindows server can't get to the fonts. You might try changing to start up on runlevel 3 if you normally come up under runlevel 5 (Xwindows). MUUG mailing lists are back up

The server upgrade went well and everything should be back to normal. Total server downtime was around 7 hours. The mailing lists took a little longer, about 2 days. The muug.ca server is now running Debian 12 and Mailman 3 (runs the emailing lists). Mailman 3 (mm3) is a complete rewrite and rearchitecture and redesign and there may be some teething pains. You should still be subscribed to the mailing lists you were prior to the upgrade. No further action should be required on your part and you can send emails to the lists as you always have. If you want to poke around the new mm3 web system, you can access the new mm3 web UI here: https://muug.ca/mailman3 You may be able to login to the new interface using your existing email/password. If you cannot, try the "forgot password" option using the email address you are subscribed under. You might also be able to make a new account and tie it to your existing subscriptions by signing up with your subscribed email address and a new username/password. mm3 seems to automatically tie it to your existing subscriptions. If you get really stuck, post your question to the roundtable mailing list, or you can email us at board(a)muug.ca, or myself directly with "MUUG" in the subject. 99.99% of the existing email list archives should be intact. You can access them by clicking "Archives" in the top navbar of the url above. The UI seems a bit quirky, and the import clearly wasn't perfect, so YMMV: we'll see if it behaves better as new emails are sent to the lists. muug.ca server outage

The muug.ca mirror and mailing list server will be down a for several hours (and possibly days) for a planned update. The mailing lists will be down even longer (a day to a week).
