My retirement, and Linux SysAdmin posting
by Gilbert Detillieux 13 Nov '25

13 Nov '25

Howdy folks. I've mentioned this to some of you already, but I'm planning on retiring from the UofM at the end of March next year. I've posted information on the "jobs" mailing list about the posting of a Linux SysAdmin job, open right now (closing Nov 21), with a proposed January 5 start date. If you missed that e-mail, you can find it in the archive... https://muug.ca/maillists.php https://muug.ca/hyperkitty/list/jobs@muug.ca/ Gilbert -- Gilbert Detillieux Computer Science University of Manitoba Winnipeg MB CANADA R3T 2N2

We have decommissioned muug.mb.ca for incoming email as of today. If you have aliases/contacts/whatever set to use that domain for email, please update them to muug.ca. muug.mb.ca will continue to work for other purposes, such as web access. We are disabling email to it to reduce incoming spam.

Reminder: MUUG Meeting, Tonight, Nov 4, 7:30pm (NEW LOCATION) -- RTFM: /bin Diving x 2
by Gilbert Detillieux 04 Nov '25

04 Nov '25

A reminder that the MUUG meeting will be this evening, both in person and online. See below for details on NEW LOCATION... The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting IN PERSON, on Tuesday, November 4th, at 7:30pm. Yes, that's the FIRST Tuesday of the month... RTFM: /bin Diving, Deutero-leanin' We are keeping it simple and interactive this month: a double /bin dive. Trevor Cordes will be walking us through the fun. /bin diving is a segment where we select a command at random on the spot and everyone gets to work out what it does and what it's good for. Collaboration and improv at its finest. It always ends up being interesting and you're guaranteed to learn something new! AGM Plus, this month's meeting will be the MUUG annual general meeting, which includes the election of the MUUG board of directors for the 2025-2026 year (usually by acclamation). Where to find the Meeting: **NOTE NEW LOCATION** Winnipeg Senior Citizens Radio Club, 598 St. Mary?s Road, 2nd Floor WSC is located at 598 St. Mary's Road, 2nd Floor, a block South from the St. Mary's / St. Anne's fork, on the West side beside the Miller's Meats. It's in the old fire hall, so you really can't miss it! Look for the red door. There is no elevator, so attendees will have to be able to climb a flight of stairs. Apologies to anyone requiring accessibility. There are a limited number of parking spaces for WSC around the building. If you arrive early you'll probably snag one. If not, there is parking available on the nearby streets, such as Mager Dr, or the streets off of St. Mary's such as Blenheim or Clonard Ave. Be careful not to park in nearby private parking lots unless otherwise indicated. For those unable or preferring not to attend in person, the meeting will also be available online, using BBB as usual. Stay tuned to our muug.ca home page for the official URL, which will be made available about a half hour before the meeting starts. (Reload the page if you don't see the link, or if there are issues with connecting.) The group now holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the *first* Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. Reminder: MUUG Meeting, Tonight, Oct 7, 7:30pm (NEW LOCATION) -- ncdu, RTFM: /bin Diving
by Gilbert Detillieux 07 Oct '25

A reminder that the MUUG meeting will be this evening, both in person and online. See below for details on NEW LOCATION... The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting IN PERSON, on Tuesday, October 7th, at 7:30pm. Yes, that's the FIRST Tuesday of the month... ncdu Brad Vokey will present and demo "ncdu" (NCurses Disk Usage), a powerful, interactive, and fast disk usage analyzer for Unix/Linux systems. It provides a text-based user interface (TUI) based on the ncurses library, offering a more user-friendly and visual way to explore disk space consumption compared to the traditional "du" command. RTFM: /bin Diving If time permits, we will also be taking a dive into the /bin, with this month's host Trevor Cordes. /bin Diving is our segment where we pick a random program in /bin to demo and discuss and learn about as a group. Resistor supply? :-)
by Kevin McGregor 01 Oct '25

01 Oct '25

Does anyone have a 220 ohm resistor I can use? I need it to fix my old Supermicro motherboard which stopped booting ages ago (due to an Intel manufacturing defect). It's the A1SRi-2758F, if you want to look it up.

CIRA Board Election Member Nominees
by Bill Reid 05 Sep '25

05 Sep '25

If you are a CIRA member you can show your support for a member nominee. To become a final candidate the nominee must receive support from 20 members. Caleb Ogundele – CIRA <https://www.cira.ca/en/board-and-governance/board-election/member-nominees/…> I do not know Caleb but he is the only one from Manitoba. His credentials are impressive and I would encourage you to give him your support. Thanks, Bill

Fizz Mobile 1/2 price plans for the first 6 months!
by Bradford C. Vokey 03 Sep '25

03 Sep '25

Hello all! Sorry for this kind of "spammy" email but: If anyone is looking for a new ultra low cost cell phone plan, the mobile company I recommended at MUUG meetings earlier this year (https://fizz.ca) is having a crazy 50% off of their already low low price sale for the first 6 months! /*However, today is the last day of the sale!*/ With this sale a 20 GB Canada wide plan is only $14.50/month for the first 6 months (regular $29): <https://fizz.ca/en/mobile?ADDONS[0]=18&CVRG=108&DATA=106&PLAN=3&SMS=223&VOI…> A 1GB Manitoba only plan can be had for as little as $8.50 per month! <https://fizz.ca/en/mobile?CVRG=16003&DATA=93&PLAN=3&SMS=223&VOICE=90&WIZARD…> You can customize your plans however you like, and with my refer-a-friend code of *16KPK *we both get a $25 credit when you sign up! <https://fizz.ca/en/mobile?ref=16KPK> I highly recommend anyone that already has a cell phone and wants a newer low cost smaller GB plan to try them out! Sincerely, -- Bradford C. Vokey Treasurer Manitoba Unix User Group
