Partitioning (again)

OK, I've wandered about the Web, and read what I could find about partitioning. I don't know if I'm too stupid or what, but I still can't decide how to partition my drive. Perhaps someone could be kind enough to at least give me some pointers in "Linux Partitioning For Dummies" format..... :/ I'm going to be running a 20 GIG drive. The system will be used for a Web server. At this time, DNS, mail, and Apache will all be run off the same machine. As time passes and my level of Linux knowledge grows, more machines will be added to distribute load. For now, concern is not running out of room on any one partition. Being new to this, I have no idea how much room anything requires. Right now, I've just got / and the swap partition. I'd like to make multiple partitions, and play with disk quotas. I suspect I'll be supporting about 6 - 8 small domains on this system, with say a dozen mail users on each domain. Here's the goods on the box: Duron 850 20 GIG IDE HD 512 MEGs RAM RedHat 7.1 (with Apache, PHP, MYSQL, sendmail, DNS, etc.). Hopefully someone can give me some ideas that will make a light go on........

Gnome=Microsoft?

Thanks for all your replies. Yes I do know there's nothing wrong with making a buck from free software, otherwise there'd be no Red Hat among other distributions, but I draw the line at Microsoft. I don't want anything to do with their stuff, including their ideas on how things should be run, like .Net. Call me paranoid, but I think .Net is just another way for big bill to slither his way around. I don't even like the idea of .Net compatibility. It's too risky. Microsoft doesn't create these ideas for fun and games. I think .Net is a trap and Gnome is walking right into it. But that's just my opinion. Again, thanks for the information.

Gnome = Microsoft?

I read that Gnome will now be based on Microsoft .Net software. How can you have an free opensource OS with Microsoft code in it? Gnome used to claim that they were 'cleaner' than KDE because Gnome had nothing to do with any for-profit company. Now Gnome says using MS code is just fine. I don't want any MS code in my Linux box! Can we get Red Hat to kick Gnome out of the distribution? That is, if AOL doesn't buy Red Hat.

files system & partitions

Can I have some advice on which part of the file system to install in which partition? For example: Is there any advantage to install /root in its own partition? Would it be more secure? I'm thinking of giving /usr its own partition incase some application gets nasty. /home would get a separate partition and everything else would go into a 4th partition. Does this sound OK? I hope Red Hat 7.2 allows me to do this if I pretend to be an 'expert'. Any advice would be much appreciated.

config files zapped

Red Hat 7.1 kernel 2.4.2-2 KDE 2.1.1 Somehow all my config files got zapped. I was busy installing apps in /usr/local in root. And I admit, I made a blunder by sending and getting some mail in Kmail while still in root. Then I noticed my KDE screen had returned to its original murky blue before I had set things up the way I like them. Anyway, the thing is, a lot of stuff has changed. Like the 300 e-mails in Kmail are all gone, Kmail's configuration is gone, all my 200 bookmarks in Konqueror are gone along with Konqueror's configs and .bash_profile and .bashrc in /root. Maybe more, I don't know. What bothers me is I'm not sure at all how this happened. Perhaps a bug in a .tar.gz or .bz2 file or was it something from an e-mail in Kmail ? Duh? On the bright side, this gives me a good excuse to install Red Hat 7.2.

AOL buying Red Hat?

I read on the Register web site that negotiations are going on for AOL to purchase Red Hat. If the deal happens, will MUUG still support Red Hat ?

RedHat 7.1. On boot up, it hangs starting ipchains firewall settings. If I do an interactive startup, I can bypass all my network stuff and xfont server. This lets me into the system. However, I will sonner or later lose my prompt, and be able to do nothing. I can find no documenation anywhere on this type of problem, and 3 individuals who I've talked to about this are stumped. Any ideas? Feel free to call me voice at 888-0452.

Wrong Address E mail

I got an e-mail today addressed to someone else. It was aimed at someone with a @hotmail account. I don't have a @hotmail account. The e-mail had an address totally different from mine, but I ended up with it. Advertising for some wretched diet scheme. Why would an ISP send one of its clients e-mail not addressed to that client ? Is it a server problem or the client's mail software? Or perhaps, internet voodo?
