Hi. Would any of you happen to know of anyone who might be interested in a slighly used HIPAD Plus 9018E digitizing tablet? It's a 12 x 18 inch tablet that comes with stylus, 4-button puck cursor, AC adapter, serial cable, menu overlays and documentation. It can emulate the following tablets: - Houston Instrument HIPAD (serial format) - Houston Instrument HIPAD Plus - Houston Instrument TRUE GRID TG-1000 - Summagraphics SummaSketch/MM 1201 (default) - Summagraphics Bit Pad Plus - Summagraphics Bit Pad 1 - Summagraphics Bit Pad 2 - Calcomp Drawing Board 2300 - Calcomp 2000 - Kurta Series One - Kurta IS/ONE - Hitachi Tiger Tablet (partial emulation, no remote commands) - GTCO Digi-Pad Type 5 (partial emulation, no remote commands) If you're interested, make us an offer. If you know of anyone who is, please pass this on to them. It was originally in the thousand dollar ballpark if I recall, but that was almost 13 years ago. It was only used lightly for the first 4 years, on a Masscomp UNIX system we no longer have, but I'm sure it would be easy to get it to work on Linux or any other OS. (I don't have any drivers for it, though.) I don't really know what we can expect to get at this point - I'm open to just about any reasonable offers, especially if someone's willing to come and pick it up. -- Gilles R. Linux 2.4 kernel swapping problem

Further to the discussion at last night's meeting, regarding swapping problems under the Linux 2.4 kernels, I found the following bug report at Red Hat's bugzilla site... http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=60079 There's also a new, open bug report that seems to describe the same thing... http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=61007 ... but that one hasn't been dealt with by Red Hat support staff yet. The solution for now seems to be to upgrade to the 2.4.18 kernel, which has a newer and more aggressive page reclamation algorithm. For now, this means either compiling your own, or using the kernel*-2.4.18-0.13 RPM's from the "skipjack" beta, or the kernel*-2.4.18-0.18 RPM's from rawhide. To use the RPM's, you'll also likely need to upgrade a few other support packages (initscripts, dev, and iptables, for example) from the same distribution. As of today, there aren't any packages available for supported versions yet. So, you can either go for an unsupported upgrade (beta or otherwise), or wait for the next official Red Hat release. -- Gilbert E. Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 9. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: LTSP - Linux Terminal Server Project The Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) is a set of packages that allows you to turn older Intel-based hardware into thin-client X Window stations, with support for local devices. LTSP supports most Unix or Linux based servers, and hardware for the terminals ranging from 486-level boxes with 8 Megs of RAM on up. Scott Balneaves, who's been working with the LTSP for a while, will describe and demonstrate an LTSP setup in action. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Kernel patches

I've never messed around with kernel patches before, so I'd like to know, is there anything to watch out for when applying a patch to a kernel ? For example, will I have to install other programs as well? Or is all of this taken care of by the patch? I've noticed that the 2.4 kernel has lots of patches. Will it make much difference if I apply them all, one at a time, or should I download a new kernel instead?

Server UPS

Sigh, another power bump. It's time to look for another UPS. I've used APC UPS's. They are OK, but had one fail completely. Looking for another UPS around 1400VA (like a APC Back-UPS Pro 1400VA). Any thoughts recommendations, testimonials on APC or other UPS's. Of course having Linux drivers/apps is required. 8-^) Brock

FTP behind router question

I'm running Mandrake 8.1 with ProFTP, and I'm connected to DSL via an OvisLink SR-801E router. Router is set to point port 21 to the right internal IP, but when you try to log in from outside the local network, you get "500 P@SW NOT UNDERSTOOD ERROR OPENING DATA SOCKET". I'm guessing that his is due to the IP the user is logging into, and the actual internal IP of the FTP server box. Can anyone point me towards the resolution? Thanks.......

ide controller card

Hi all. I have run out of ide sockets on my main board. I'm looking for recommendations... please, for an ide controller card for an elder P2 266 running Red Hat 7.2 I'm also wondering if it's time to upgrade the power supply from 250W to 300 or better. I have a CDRW to put in. I have no experience with burners but I understand they are heavy consumers of power. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance. Ian.

DDR motherboards

Can anyone give me advice on a good DDR motherboard ? I'm looking at the Computer Avenue price list. Soyo SYK7V $225 ABiT KG7 $204 Epox 8KHA $140 IWiLL KA 266Plus ? They list KK 266PLus but its only PC-133, but they also sell the DDR iWiLL KA 266Plus as part of a Duron system. Anyway, I'm interested in any good DDR motherboard from any vendor. Are there any that are exceptionally good? I'm especially interested in avoiding anything that is exceptionally bad. This is for a home system, not a server. Duron 1200 socket A I expect to put 256 Megs DDR on it and run a dual boot Win98 / Red Hat system. Why is it walking into a computer store feels like walking onto a used car lot? Any advice would be most welcome.
