The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our new meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15 PM, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30 PM. Don't be late, or you may not get in. Limited parking is available for free on the street, or in a lot across Ellice from IBM, for $1.00 for the evening. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $2.00 for the evening. ********************************************************************** For more information about MUUG, and its monthly meetings, check out their Web server: http://www.muug.mb.ca/ Also note that MUUG maintains two mailing lists, called "muug-announce" and "roundtable". If you're not already on these lists, we encourage you to subscribe now: http://www.muug.mb.ca/mailman/listinfo/ The "muug-announce" list is used for monthly meeting announcements (such as this one) as well as other important announcements of interest to MUUG members. The "rountable" list is meant to be a forum for follow-ups to topics discussed at the meetings, or for round-table-style discussion on other topics that come up between meetings. Of course, for this to be effective, we need to reach a certain critical mass. So, please subscribe, and stay involved! -- Gilbert E. port forwarding and ssh
by Mel Seder 19 Jan '04

19 Jan '04

My Router is a Netgear RP614 and I can successfully ping the address reported by www.ipchicken.com. Netgear's port forwarding screen shows SERVICES as "192.168.0" and nothing for the fourth group of digit(s). I tried to change the SERVICES to read "192.168.0.1" to but when I tried to change the services to read "192.168.0.1" Netgear pops up a "[JavaScript Application]" box saying "invalid service". I can ssh into my linuxbox downstairs (192.168.0.3) with no problem. Also on the NetGear Port Forwarding screen: Under the column headed "Service Name" 20-22 is shown, and to the far right is the Server IP address of 192.168.0.1 is shown. ipchicken.com reports the address the outside world can use to log into my system and when I ssh to what ipchicken.com says I get the ssh message saying "connection refused". I'm *guessing* that maybe SERVICES should be set to what ipchicken reported instead of a local lan address. Is that a bad guess? Any clues or suggestions as to what may be wrong? ===== The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good. -Samuel Johnson, lexicographer (1709-1784)

Windows Services for Unix
by Bill Reid 16 Jan '04

Microsoft must feel threaten. They are now not charging for their Services for Unix (SFU). It looks pretty extensive. Of course MS's motive is to encourage migration of Unix apps to the Windows platform. But on the otherhand it is nice to see Microsoft enhancing their OS to interoperate with Unix. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/ Enjoy, Bill

Perl
by Bill Newman 14 Jan '04

14 Jan '04

Thanks to Sean for his Perl talk on Jan 13. I would like to recommend: Perl: The Programmer's Companion by Nigel Chapman, published by Wiley This book is aimed at programmers and focuses on how you can use Perl to work in familiar "programming idioms", i.e. get the job done. It makes a useful contrast to Larry Wall's "spare me no details" approach. He uses formal syntax diagrams for precision. By page 68 he has described enough of the language to launch into an example of a "single pass recursive descent compiler". To wit, the translator that converts his personal notation for syntax diagrams into the LaTeX notation that drives Mark Wooding's package for typesetting syntax diagrams. Obscure enough for you? :=) It's actually not a difficult read. He uses the same clear "what you need to know" style to go through Data Structures, Objects, Modules, and other Perl topics that have more detail and variability than you need to know all at once. Not a reference work but an excellent introduction to the power of Perl. Bill _______________________________________________________________ Bill Newman wrnewman(a)mb.sympatico.ca Winnipeg Manitoba

Can anyone recommend an coffee shop or eating establishment that is centrally located, has public WiFi access, and has good free parking? Also, does anyone know of a site that lists publicly available WiFi access points in Winnipeg? Thanks. -- John Lange BigHostBox.com (204) 885 0872

LCD character displays?
by Sean A. Walberg 29 Dec '03

29 Dec '03

Has anyone played around with LCD character displays under Linux, perhaps with something like LCDProc? (I'm talking 2x24 character and the like, not LCD display panels) If so, any recommendations on serial LCDs? I've been playing with Hitachi 44780 displays and microcontrollers lately, but it's a parallel display and LCDProc's interfaces to it are through parallel ports. There are several serial LCD products out there, and I'm trying to weigh the work of building a serial interface to it vs just buying a serial LCD. For those that have no idea what I'm talking about, this would let you display things like load average and memory utilization on the front of a headless computer. Throw in some switches, and you can safely power down a box without having to ssh in or fiddle with KVMs. Cobalts have them, you can even fiddle with IP addresses from the front panel.
