Kernel 2.6 Swappiness

Just a little heads up about something that kernel 2.6 users may not have noticed. When I installed the 2.6.5 kernel I was poking around '/proc' and noticed a file in '/proc/vm' called 'swappiness' (which had a value of 60). I had some idea about what it was for but there was no mention of it in the kernel docs. Later that day I was looking at http://kerneltrap.org and noticied this article: http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/3000?PHPSESSID=d5c5223a98199bf350e69d77c36c… It says 'swappiness' can be set between 0 and 100 (0 = no swapping, 100 = lotsa swapping) and mentions some recent discussions on the kernel mailing list about what 'swappiness' setting is ideal (i.e., don't swap anything to disk or swap everything to disk or some middle ground). The kernel maintainer, Andrew Morton, sets it 100 to free up as much memory as possible, while others think that desktop users don't want a delay when switching back to their apps so 'swappiness' should be closer to 0. I have it set at 25 now and it seems to work well (with 320 MB RAM) for everyday desktop use. Just for completeness, if you want to set the 'swappiness' value use: sysctl -w vm.swappiness=x [ 'x' being a value from 0-100 ] And put: vm.swappiness=x in '/etc/sysclt.conf' (or wherever 'sysctl.conf' is on you machine) to keep that value on reboot. Prohibiting selected users from booting into Windows

Our kids are coming for a few days over the May long weekend. They both are computer users and I don't want them running Windows on my PC. Currently when the computer boots you can select Windows or Linux. Is there some kind of autoexec I can put on windows that requires a password to continue. If the password isn't keyed in I want the PC to either shut down (preferably) or go to grub's boot screen. Linux Live CD to edit Windows registry

I seem to recall someone mentioning a Linux Live CD that was able to make changes to the Windows registry on the machine. I thought it was Knoppix STD, but after looking at their page, it does not look like they do. Does anyone recall which one it was? thanks shawn

Hi there, This won't be rally answer to your question about installing Xine on RH8. I would rather suggest to you to try BLAG distro which is based on RH9, if you can. It is actually RH9 compacted into one CD plus a tons of nice media application which work right out of box. In my case, it was first time Xine work propely for me without downloading any extra codecs and plugins. Has anyone installed xine on Red Hat 8.0 ? I thought it would be no problem, what with 2.7 Gigs of Red Hat 8.0 software on a 5.9 Gig partition. So I went to: http://freshrpms.net and downloaded: aalib-1.4rc5-fr1.i386.rpm xine-lib-1.0.0-fr0.beta9.1.i386.rpm xine-0.9.20-fr1.i386.rpm The aalib program installed OK, but the xine-lib failed due to 10 missing dependencies. glut, alsa-lib, libfame, flac, xvidcore, libFLAC.so.4, libasound.so.2, libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.3.2), libfame-0.9.so.0 libpthread.so.0 (GLIBC_2.3.2) I thought the whole idea of a library file was to deal with dependencies, but I'm just old-fashioned. I'd say xine is pretty hopeless, but just incase, has anyone successfully installed xine on Red Hat 8.0 ? Any advice would be welcome.

The Windows help files tell you to reboot all the other computers on the network in order to see the new computer, but there's got to be a better way! The Fix: There is. Assuming your hardware connections are working, and you've created at least one shared resource on the new computer, you don't have to reboot the rest of the network to see the new computer. Wait twelve minutes. Honest. Could I make that up? Get a cup of coffee, empty the dishwasher, or change all the burned out light bulbs in the house. Then open the network folder again, or press F5 to refresh the display if you didn't close the folder. You should now see the new computer. Why does this happen? The icons in the network folders (My Network Places and Network Neighborhood) are controlled by a service called the Computer Browser Service, which browses the network, peers down the pipes (including the virtual pipes of wireless connections), and checks to see who's on board. In a peer-to-peer network, the computers elect one of their own as a browser master using a complicated scheme that involves a private conversation among the computers (held secretly so you aren't aware of it and can't control or interfere with it). The browser master runs the browser service every twelve minutes, and populates the network folders of all computers on the network with icons representing the computers it finds. ***

Motherboard and hardware suggestions for servers?

Hello all. I was hoping one of you server types would have a suggestion for a motherboard that would be suitable for use in a server. Up until now I've built all my machines (including servers) using "off-the-shelf" hardware purchased from CBIT and it has worked great for me. I've been doing it this way for a long time and I've never had any significant problems. Now I'm looking to build another box and I'm wondering what a good choice of hardware would be. This box will have at least 1G of RAM and I would like it to have 4 SATA hard drives doing some kind of software RAID. I'd _like_ dual processors but I'm not willing to quadruple the price of the system just to get it which is also the reason why I've never considered purchasing any of the ready made "server" systems from the likes of Dell, Sun, or IBM. I just don't have the budget for it. I'm really interested in opinions from other sever admins as to what you use for your boxes. Thanks. -- John Lange BigHostBox.com (204) 885 0872

The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Redundant Firewalls with OpenBSD 3.5's CARP and pfsync Shawn Wallbridge will discuss setting up redundant firewalls with CARP (Common Address Redundancy Protocol) and pfsync, which are new features of OpenBSD 3.5. He will also discuss other uses for CARP. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30 PM on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.)
