CIRA Board of Directors - Vote for Bill!

Those of you who are the administrative contacts for a registered domain under the .ca top-level domain will have no doubt received an e-mail such as the one below (which you may have already deleted without giving it much thought). Those of you who weren't at Tuesday's MUUG meeting might be interested to know that Bill Reid (a long-time MUUG member, and the presenter at our Tuesday meeting) is one of the candidates for the CIRA board of directors election. I've known Bill for a long time, and can't think of anyone in Manitoba who would be more qualified as a CIRA board member. His knowledge of networks, and his dedication to whatever tasks he takes on, would make him a great asset to CIRA, and to all network users in Manitoba. I strongly encourage you to vote for Bill! Further to Bill's presentation at last night's MUUG meeting. I picked up a WRT54GS model a couple of weeks ago. Here are the pertinent stats on it. It is interesting to note that the serial interface is active, yet has no headers to connect to. I believe there are mods you can make to your board (if you are so inclined and are good with a soldering iron) ... anyways, here's the stats on mine... Creating devices, slowly

I have SuSE 9.2, kernel 2.6.8, on an elderly laptop. During boot-up, it prints "Creating devices", and then pauses for over a minute before printing a message about loading the Reiserfs module. Is there some way I can find out what it is doing and why it is taking so long?

Detillieux) The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 14. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Open Source on the Linksys WRT54G Bill Reid will demo the WRT54G wireless router running Open Source firmware. Linksys used Linux to create their firmware and released the source. Many versions of the firmware are available. Bill will demo the firmware version from Sweasoft. Hopefully he will also be able to demo the OpenWRT Linux distro for the WRT54G, and possibly also Asterisk running on OpenWRT. Bill will also demo a couple of IP phones: the wireless WiSIP and the Sipura 841. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Limited parking is available for free on the street, or in a lot across Ellice from IBM, for $1.00 for the evening. Linux Summer Camp in Winnipeg for High Schoolers

I'm running a Linux Summer Camp for high school students. I would love your help in two respects: 1. Help spread the word, to high school students who would be interested in learning more about Linux and computer programming, or to people such as high school teachers who could pass along the information. 2. Give me ideas or offers for field trips or guest speakers. Do any of you who have access to interesting computing installations (hardware or software) want to give a tour to 10 to 20 high schoolers who might be going into our field? Do any of you have a strong interest in doing some sort of demo during the camp? The tentative schedule for the week is full and includes one field-trip slot, but I'm still planning and I'm open to suggestions. I'll include a URL to the information page below, but here's some more background information in case you're curious. The camp is at Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg (in the old School for the Deaf at Grant Ave. and Shaftesbury Blvd.) where I teach Computer Science part-time (consulting the other part). It's open to students entering grades 10, 11 and 12. The University is Mennonite in the religious sense, but the camp is open to anyone, i.e. any or no religion is fine. Last summer I focussed on installing and configuring Linux and there were 8 campers. This summer will be more focussed on programming, but still on Linux and with a significant amount of Linux focus. The programming will be in Python -- the same language we use to teach first-year Computer Science students. Of last year's 8 attendees, 7 (so far) are planning to return, so I think the camp last summer was a success. This boosts my confidence that this summer will also be a satisfying experience for the students. It's an overnight camp including food and lodging and with planned evening activities. WRT54G kewlness

Ramblings for the day ... I recall there being some discussions on the list about this device and looked into it a bit more and was quite impressed. It beat my old pc firewall and uses less power (and decibels) to boot (less power is good with my machines) ... Just picked up one of these babies (BestBuy $90 or some such) .. sweat deal ... Actually, it's a WRT54GS (speedy software thingy, ugh) .. but .. has twice the memory! So, starting to sniff around the net and find out more ... man, is there more ... http://openwrt.org/ .. main site of stuff ... http://www.wrt54g.com/ .. another site ... http://www.sveasoft.com/ ... Xen gotcha

I was playing with Xen and bumped into an issue which stumped me for a while. If you use the binary dstribution from the Xen site don't fall into the trap that I did. I was using the Quick Start guide on RedHat and they suggested the grub.conf should look like: (my /boot is hd0,0) title Xen 2.0 / XenLinux 2.6.10 root (hd0,0) kernel /xen.gz dom0_mem=128M ..... when in fact the xen.gz from the binary distribution does not support using M in the dom0_mem parameter. It complains that there is not enough space for the Guest OS. I should have used: title Xen 2.0 / XenLinux 2.6.10 root (hd0,0) kernel /xen.gz dom0_mem=131072 noreboot .... The noreboot is a good parameter to use for testing since without it the xen microkernel reboots after 10 seconds which is a pain when you are trying to read the error messages. :-( -- Bill
