MUUG Board Elections - FINAL CALL for Nominations
by Gilbert E. Detillieux 24 Aug '07

24 Aug '07

Hear ye, hear ye! This is a preliminary call for nominees to participate in the election for the MUUG board. Those elected will serve from October 2007 until October 2008. The deadline to nominate yourself, or someone else, is September 25, 2007. Instructions follow. The MUUG board is charged with coordinating the meetings and other events by the group. It's fun, and you get a role in guiding the group. All are encouraged to apply. ------------------------ MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations Every October the Manitoba Unix User Group holds its Annual Meeting, the main goals of which are to elect a new Board of Directors and to pass any special resolutions. (Aside from that, it is a regular meeting) Any member in good standing can be nominated to run for a position. As of this writing, the following members of the current Board have let their names stand for re-election: Gilbert Detillieux Systems Analyst University of Manitoba Michael Doob Professor University of Manitoba Kevin McGregor Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg Doug Shewfelt Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg Adam Thompson Consultant athompso.net Shawn Walbridge System Administrator Frantic Films Of course, this list is just a starting point. Any member in good standing of the group can be nominated simply by getting the support of one other member. If you feel you would like to contribute to the group by running for a board position, please don't hesitate to do so. (In fact, we'd like to see the number of board members increase.) If you want to be nominated, or to nominate someone else, send a letter to the group's postal box or deliver it in person to a current board member. The letter must contain the name, title, and employer of the nominee, along with a short (100 word or so) biography, and must contain the signatures of the nominee and one other member. The letter must be received no later than September 25, 2007, which is 14 days prior to the October 9 meeting. Although the by-laws require that the nominations be done in writing, with signatures, you can speed up the process by sending us e-mail to <election(a)muug.mb.ca>, with the above information, and sending the signed paper copy later. In this case, please include the e-mail address of both the nominee and the supporter on the CC: list of the message, so that all parties concerned have a record of the communication. Nominees should familiarize themselves with the MUUG bylaws, found here: http://www.muug.mb.ca/pub/bylaws/ If you have any questions about the election or the nomination process, please contact Gilbert Detillieux, either by phone (474-8161) during business hours, or by e-mail to <election(a)muug.mb.ca> anytime. Here's an interesting article that talks of the longstanding comparison between Windows and Linux: http://tlug.jp/articles/Windows_Is_Free I feel it is quite well written. -Montana

Article: Windows is Free

http://tlug.jp/articles/Windows_Is_Free I just read it myself - I don't agree with all of the author's conclusions, but he makes an interesting and, I think, largely valid point as to why more people aren't using free operating systems such as Linux. -Adam

Point to point wireless
by Kevin McGregor 14 Aug '07

14 Aug '07

Does anyone have some pointers (personal experiences, URLs, etc) on how to set up a point to point (house to house) wireless network? I and two geeky neighbours are thinking about setting up a private internal network to connect our houses, and we're not sure where to start.

Unix Copyrights Rightfully Belong to Novell
by John Lange 13 Aug '07

13 Aug '07

It's pretty much all over but the crying.... "In a decision that may finally settle one of the most bitter legal battles surrounding software widely used in corporate data centers, a federal district court judge in Utah ruled Friday afternoon that Novell, not the SCO Group, is the rightful owner of the copyrights covering the Unix operating system." http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/11/technology/11novell.html?ref=business

Monitor detection
by John Lange 10 Aug '07

10 Aug '07

I know someone mentioned this at a distant past MUUG meeting; what is the command line tool that will query the attached monitor for its settings? I believe this is called DDC? I have a laptop and I'd like to have a command line tool that can detect if a second monitor is attached. Any tips? John

VIA releases source for Display and Wireless
by John D 18 Jul '07

18 Jul '07

Got VIA ? Once in a while they release chip info to FOSS folk. Frequent? No. Welcome? Yes. (And No) VIA Technologies Taiwan has (finally again) released DISPLAY DRIVER INFO for their Integrated Grfx Processors: Cn896 (Chrome9 HC) K8m890 (DeltaChrome) P4m900 (Chrome9) Vn896 (Chromotion, mobile) Info includes: - SOURCE CODE (!) - Kernel Library - V0079 Application note (FC5) - V0079 Install Guide - Debian4, FC5/6, Mandriva2007 http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&OSID=25&CatID=2580 _ _ _ VIA also released NETWORKING DRIVER SOURCE CODE for their vt6655 & vt6656 "Solomon" WIRELESS LAN ("WLAN") controllers http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&OSID=25&CatID=2590 _ _ _ _ VIA did this last back in 2005, with a Linux kernel 2.6.x source release for their CLe266 & Cn400 IGPs. The Open community would, therefrom, advance into terror-tories beyond VIA's own binary releases. That 2005 release was with usual press fanfare, but acrimony lurked. Hardly compliant (enough) with tenets of OSS purist Lucas Verhaegen of TheUnichromeProject (stagnant since 2005mar), there was some dissent and pooh-pooh bandied about. Shortly before he ousted the hwAcceleration feature from TUP, Verhaegen had branded the (rival?) separate project OpenChrome as a "fork". The latter chose to maintain that popular hwAccel feature. Hence, OpenChrome has since inherited "the wind". Waaall, we'll see how hard she "blows" this time, mateys. Aharrr. Cap'n Johnny big fan of Edubuntu and Mint
