infrastructure problem?

Could anyone define for me, in IT terms, what an infrastructure problem is? Revenue Canada is now in such a mess it can't even process mail in tax forms. They claim it is an "infrastructure problem". Duh? Has anyone any idea what hardware / software they depend upon? I'd like to have some idea what went wromg. After all, as a tax payer, I'm paying for this mess. And so are you!

Ubuntu networking problem

I am trying to move a Ubuntu Linux 5.10 server from a physical machine to a virtual machine running under VMware Server. I have managed to duplicate the disk and get it to boot properly, but eth0 does not end up with an IP address. The proper module for it is pcnet32, and it shows up in `lsmod`, but aside from that, nothing. ifconfig shows the interface is there. What have I missed?

Questions about dig

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell if dig had to perform a recursive query to return an answer? This seems like it would be an obvious thing to indicate in a result but it doesn't seem to show up anyplace. So for example, in the query: # dig @localhost www.somedomain.com I'd like to know: - did localhost consider itself the authorative answer? - if not, did it return the result from local cache? - or, did it recursively discover the result from out on the net? - If it recursively discovered the answer, which server did it query to get the answer? In my testing, I performed some queries where I knew before hand the answers to the above questions and then compared the results from dig and I could find no definitive way to tell the difference in the results. Any dig masters want to give me some tips? John

MUUG Meeting, March 13, 7:30pm -- Sun's Zettabyte File System

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 13. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Sun's Zettabyte File System Shawn Wallbridge will be presenting on ZFS, a new filesystem that was introduced with Solaris 10 update 2. Some have called it the most advanced file system ever; it certainly has a lot of very advanced features. Shawn will discuss ZFS, its features and benefits, and how it has changed how Frantic Films looks at storage. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $3.00 for the evening. Seeking Perl CGI / XML programmer for small job

I'm looking for some names to pass on... A local company is looking for someone to complete the development of a software system that is already partially designed and implemented. The software is a CGI interface into a database for custom XML transactions. Some business logic exists, but not much. Total project size (including parts already completed) was estimated at 65 - 100 hours. Said company requires an initial (re?)implementation to be completed ASAP, probably about 30-40hrs of work. Code must be clean and easily readable, and well documented, as it will be used as the starting point for future variants (with different XML-speaking trading partners). If you can code XML in Perl (or possibly PHP), against a MySQL database, and are interested in this small opportunity, please contact me. (Sorry, Python and Ruby are out - this has to be hosted in an old version of ActivePerl / ActivePHP. You can argue that point later if necessary.). 127.0.0.1 -> a web page

I am playing around with the idea of putting a hosts file on the the computers I look after that points a lot of sites to 127.0.0.1 (i.e. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm ) I've been testing it on my computer and it seems to work well, except it would be nice if it would display a custom page (stored locally), instead of the default "Unable to connect"(FF), or "The page cannot be displayed" (IE). I know there are som shell script type web servers for linux but this would need to be a Windows app. I don't want to potentially create more insecurity (from installing a full web server). Any suggestions? -Montana
