Video Editing?

I'm curious about what people use for video editing in Linux. I have a Sony Mini-DV Handicam, and now with a cheap firewire card I can pull video down onto my computer. I'd like to ultimately end up making DVDs and short clips to share with the family and keep with the photo albums. Kino is very simple, in fact I think it's too simple. After playing with it for a while I think I prefer Microsoft Movie Maker. I'd have actually gone that way (my Windows work PC is a lot faster than my Linux home PC) but the Microsoft tool can't generate DVDs directly. I've been playing with Cinelerra, which is in an entirely different league, almost like going from mspaint to Photoshop. Lots more features, but a bigger learning curve. In about an hour I figured out how to import the video files, edit the cutmarks, and splice them together with transitions, which is about all Kino can do. The kicker is to generate the final video you have to render it -- a 75 second clip with no complex stuff is taking over 20 minutes at DVD quality on my meager 1.8GHz P4. MUUG Meeting, Sept 11, 7:30pm -- Open Source Geospatial Software

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 11. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: A Survey of Open Source Geospatial Software This presentation will briefly describe what open source software is and how it is licensed along with some examples of widely used open-source software. What to look for as a user of open-source software will also be presented. Then the field of open-source geospatial software will be described from the organization coordinating the development to the types of open source geospatial software such as map servers, database management systems and mapping clients. If time permits then the presentation will conclude with demonstrations of some open-source geospatial software. Bob Bruce, P.Eng., Geomatics Support Engineer, Lands and Mapping Branch of Manitoba Conservation, will be our speaker for this presentation. Bob specializes in software applications for Geomatics, in particular Property Mapping Applications. Bob is a registered Professional Engineer in Manitoba, and a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) Professional Development Committee. Bob also does web-based PHP programming and database design in his spare time. Recently he has developed a mapping interface for the Murals of Winnipeg website, where Winnipeg's murals can be viewed using a map interface. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $3.00 for the evening. This is for a friend who isn't on the list yet. He's been to a couple of meetings and is thinking of joining the club in September. This guy tapes wedding videos as a hobby. He has family in the Ukraine (as do the people whose weddings he records). He wants to convert some of the video tapes to a computer format so he can edit them (throw in titles and fancy transitions etc.). Maybe later convert them to DVD. He would like some recommendations about hardware and software. In addition to video in, he is thinking about setting up his machine as a part time PVR. Again, hardware and software recommendations are what he wants. He has another request. He wants to know what software he can use to convert audio from a cassette tape to MP3 format. His father accumulated quite a collection of Ukrainian music when he was alive. So now he wants to convert his fathers collection over so he can listen to it on his computer and portable system. He already has some hardware. He's running a dual core 64 bit system with loads of RAM and hard drive space. He is dualbooting with Ubuntu (FF) and XP. Later Mike

MUUG Board Elections - FINAL CALL for Nominations

Hear ye, hear ye! This is a preliminary call for nominees to participate in the election for the MUUG board. Those elected will serve from October 2007 until October 2008. The deadline to nominate yourself, or someone else, is September 25, 2007. Instructions follow. The MUUG board is charged with coordinating the meetings and other events by the group. It's fun, and you get a role in guiding the group. All are encouraged to apply. ------------------------ MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations Every October the Manitoba Unix User Group holds its Annual Meeting, the main goals of which are to elect a new Board of Directors and to pass any special resolutions. (Aside from that, it is a regular meeting) Any member in good standing can be nominated to run for a position. As of this writing, the following members of the current Board have let their names stand for re-election: Gilbert Detillieux Systems Analyst University of Manitoba Michael Doob Professor University of Manitoba Kevin McGregor Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg Doug Shewfelt Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg Adam Thompson Consultant athompso.net Shawn Walbridge System Administrator Frantic Films Of course, this list is just a starting point. Any member in good standing of the group can be nominated simply by getting the support of one other member. If you feel you would like to contribute to the group by running for a board position, please don't hesitate to do so. (In fact, we'd like to see the number of board members increase.) If you want to be nominated, or to nominate someone else, send a letter to the group's postal box or deliver it in person to a current board member. The letter must contain the name, title, and employer of the nominee, along with a short (100 word or so) biography, and must contain the signatures of the nominee and one other member. The letter must be received no later than September 25, 2007, which is 14 days prior to the October 9 meeting. Although the by-laws require that the nominations be done in writing, with signatures, you can speed up the process by sending us e-mail to <election(a)muug.mb.ca>, with the above information, and sending the signed paper copy later. In this case, please include the e-mail address of both the nominee and the supporter on the CC: list of the message, so that all parties concerned have a record of the communication.
