Hardware question

Sorry this is not a *nix question, but here goes: Should there be any problem mixing two DDR2-667 DIMMs (CAS 4-4-4-12) with two other DDR2-667 DIMMs (CAS 5-5-5-15)? Would you expect problems, or should the system just use the slower of the speeds?

MUUG Meeting, May 13, 7:30pm -- NAS Smackdown!

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 13. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: NAS Smackdown! FreeNAS is freely-downloadable software based on FreeBSD which turns nearly any old PC into a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device with a web-based management interface. It supports software RAID, disk encryption, can be an iSCSI target, implements CIFS, FTP, RSYNC, and much more. NexentaStor is a very similar commercial product which is available in a free 1-terabyte-limited version. NexentaStor is based on OpenSolaris. Kelly Leveille and Kevin McGregor will compare and contrast FreeNAS and NexentaStor, and time-permitting will show how to turn an old computer running Windows 2000 into something useful! The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. FreeBSD 7 install -- help required!

I've installed FreeBSD 7 twice today, and both times it hangs with a blank screen and a blinking cursor after the install and final reboot. It's a AMD Athlon 64 X2 system with 2 GB RAM and a 40 GB hard drive (38162 MB, WD400JB). Before installing the first time, I erased it with a single blanking run of Derik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN). At the beginning of the install, it complained about the drive geometry (how 90s). The FreeBSD installer indicates that the geometry is set to 77545/16/63, that this is wrong, and it's using something better, which turns out to be 4865/255/63. When I go into the BIOS, it reports the geometry to be 19158/16/255. FreeBSD doesn't let me set the geometry to either of the two other ones! Oh, and one install I used the "FreeBSD Boot Manager" option, and the other time I told it to use the standard MBR option. So now what do I do? Kevin

VMware Appliance Distro

Hello, I would like to know if there is a super thin Linux distro that's single purpose is to fire up a VMware image when the computer boots up. I would like to try doing something similar to the Cirtix Xen Desktop stuff that they showed off at Epic, but I would like the users Virtual Image to be on a USB flash or hard drive and the PC to have a very simple linux install that just loads the VMWare image when the machine is started up. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of going the "Linux From Scratch" route if there isn't anything already out there. -Montana

Mysql connection problem

Hi All, I am able to connect to Mysql via command line using mysql client. I am also able to connect to mysql via php if I run those php programs via command line. However when I hit those php pages via the browser it throws the error Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2). GNUCash and PC Financial

Anyone got GNUCash and PC Financial talking through aqbanking? I can download the OFX file from my bank and manually import the information, but it appears I can set up a web service to do this automagically. The information that aqbanking is asking for is not obvious, I'm hoping someone has some details before I have to resort to *gulp* calling the bank.
