XDMCP on Ubuntu Precise (12.04 LTS)

I have a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server with no GUI/desktop installed. I'd like to have a desktop of some kind running, but I won't be using the desktop at the console, just over my LAN. I'd like the console to remain text-only. What's the shortest route to getting this? I presume I'll need some kind of X client on my PC and connect via XDMCP to the server. Suggestions? Kevin

Stale NFS handles? Try lsof|grep MD instead? can't stop md yet lsof is empty?

Very weird problem here: I umounted the filesystem on a md (RAID1) device. Then: mdadm --stop /dev/md1 mdadm: Cannot get exclusive access to /dev/md1:Perhaps a running process, mounted filesystem or active volume group? Huh? lsof /dev/md1 <nothing!> I remounted the fs and tried lsof <fs> and it was empty too. I can't seem to find any reason why mdadm --stop should not allow stopping this array. Any ideas? Anything other than lsof that can help find out why?

OBD-II compliant car diagnostic tool

My adventure with OBD II and Linux began at http://www.vanheusden.com/O2OO/ The chip that makes the tool work so well is the ELM327 from Elm Electronics @ www.elmelectronics.com. Elm has several ELM32x chips for differing OBD and CAN uses. Most output to RS-232 so they are typically packaged with an FTDI serial-to-USB converter but some are packaged with a Bluetooth chip. The Australian outfit I ordered from was dx.com as recommended by Mr. Vanheusden. Depending on which Linux distro used you may have to compile some of the dependencies yourself even though the tool itself is written in Python. -Daryl

shell/term zealots, any ideas?

What should we be setting our TERM env var to in normal linux graphical (and non-graphical) environments? So that it's always happy whether logging in at the console or via an xterm/gnoneterm on same box or via ssh? I was using TERM=linux but that crashes tcsh now. MUUG Meeting, Mar 12, 7:30pm -- Mini-Topic Trio

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 12. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Mini-Topic Trio Linux allows you to do some pretty cool stuff with digital cameras. Trevor Cordes will demonstrate how to use Linux to control a Canon SLR, and do some neat post-processing tricks such as exposure bracketing (AEB). After 30 years, the writing is on the wall for the venerable MBR (Master Boot Record). Now that drives larger than 2 TB are commonly available, something else will have to replace it. That something is heir-apparent GPT (GUID Partition Table). Kevin McGregor will discuss the history of disk partitioning, and how to make use of disks larger than 2 TB under Linux. The March RTFM will feature Gilbert Detillieux, talking about the rpm(8) and yum(8) commands, used for package management in Red Hat and similar Linux distributions. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.)
