Further to my presentation on fighting spam (at the October MUUG meeting), I just read an IT World Canada article called "Top 10 e-mail blunders of 2008"... http://www.itworldcanada.com/Pages/Docbase/ViewArticle.aspx?id=idgml-0a1c74… Following a link about backscatter messages in that article, I came across an article from last year (from the same site), about some spam research projects that are in the works... http://www.itworldcanada.com/Pages/Docbase/ViewArticle.aspx?title=&ID=idgml… This article had numerous links to other interesting articles, among them this one on anti-phishing education (from a sister publication)... http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/100807-real-antiphishing-education.ht… Finally, this article mentioned an interesting project at CMU, where they developed an online game called Anti-Phishing Phil as a teaching tool. Looking for a good home

I hope no one minds me posting this here, but I don't want to trash this stuff without trying to find a good home for it. Two Sun SparcStation ELCs One Sun SparcStation 2 (pizza box) One Sun SparcStation IPC (lunchbox style) It's all free, and I'm not sure which parts are working and which aren't. Let me know if anyone is interested, else I'll try FreeCycle or just drop it off at an electronics recycling centre. Kevin

MUUG Meeting, Oct 14, 7:30pm -- Got Spam? Fight Back!

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 14. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Got Spam? Fight Back! This month, MUUG regular Gilbert Detillieux will talk about spam, why it's a problem, and how to fight back. His presentation will focus on how he's configured sendmail's built-in features for blocking spam, as well as a few external mail filters (milters) that allow for more elaborate filtering. Milter-greylist, SpamAssassin and ClamAV will be featured. It's also election night in Canada, so make sure you go out and vote! Polls close at 8pm, so you should have plenty of time to vote before you come to the meeting. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $3.00 for the evening.
