A reminder that the MUUG meeting will be this evening, both in person and online... The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting IN PERSON, on Tuesday, June 3th, at 7:30pm. Yes, that's the FIRST Tuesday of the month... RawTherapee Wyatt Zacharias has volunteered to give us a quick demo of RawTherapee. Take your photography to the next level with RawTherapee. Modern DSLR (and now mirrorless) camera sensors are capable of capturing dynamic range far beyond what a standard 8-bit JPG can display. By capturing the raw sensor data from the camera we can access up to 14 bits of dynamic range and adjust our photos non-destructively and without any loss of quality. RawTherapee provides a full suite of photo editing tools including color correction, white balance, noise and distortion correction, and many more. RTFM: /bin Diving 5.0, The Brazilian Strikes Back! Due to overwhelming meeting participation (and a little board member peer pressure), we have somehow convinced our Brazilian board member, Alberto Abrao, to take a spin at trying to figure out what a random /bin command does, live. Where to find the Meeting: Fortress Software Inc., 350 Keewatin St -- Unit #2 For one last time, we are again meeting at Brad Vokey's work office. The meeting room will be open by 7:00 pm, with the actual meeting starting at 7:30 pm. If driving, enter the lot using the most north east entrance and drive around to the south west corner of the building (see route in map detail on poster linked below). You can use any of the free, ample, and safe parking spots that say "reserved" in front of units #1 through #4 before entering unit #2. Bus stops #30814 and #30880 (route 77) are only 150 meters away. The last bus leaves for Polo Park at 10:15 pm and for Garden City at 10:31 pm. Logan Ave. bus routes #19, #26, and #27 are a 600 meter (8 minute) walk to the south. For those unable or preferring not to attend in person, the meeting will also be available online, using BBB as usual. Stay tuned to our muug.ca home page for the official URL, which will be made available about a half hour before the meeting starts. Dear all, I'm looking for information or documents related to the Winnipeg PET Users Group, which was active in the early 1980s. I'd be interested in obtaining newsletters, library disks, or any other material, and in speaking with anyone who was involved in the club. The only two members' names I am aware of are Bob Jolly and Larry Neufeld -- if anyone could put me in touch with them or anyone else with information about the group, that would be great. Windows activation in VM?

I'll need to activate my Win7 install in a VirtualBox VM soon. It's a legit copy with a legit code, all brand new/unused. I want to ensure that the VM will work even when the underlying laptop is upgraded in the future. Thus I started worrying about CPUID pass-thru, etc. I want to be sure I tweak everything now to avoid re-activation in the future. What things should I worry about here? Is there anything more than just CPUID? Looks like VB has a difficult way to set CPUID, not in the GUI. Then the next question is, what do I set it to? Does the CPUID provide just a id of the model of CPU, or does it also include a CPU serial #? If the latter, then I guess you need to make sure it's unique for that version of Windows or they may deny activation?? Any other thoughts? Mahjong unleashed!

I asked the wizards at the last meeting about getting some sort of accelerated/3d video working in a win7 guest on a linux host, so the wife can run her favorite win7(only!)-included Mahjong. I tried all the solutions offered. KVM was still impossible because even though there is a slightly obscure GL driver, the win7 support is experiemental, listed as buggy, and not updated in many years, nor talked about much (never a good sign). I decided not to fight with it to get it installed unless the other options were exhausted. So I tried the VirtualBox with the enable-3d option. Ya, so after realizing I needed to up the video-ram option, I was able to make a vm and install win7, install the guest programs, and... boom Mahjong just works, doesn't complain about no 3d, and runs basically as fast and pretty as it did on the old win7 bare metal laptop did. ... with basically zero effort and work. Astounding. Compare that to serious time wastage fighting with KVM/qemu and win7, during which I never got 3d working (with any avenue of attack), nor all the agent stuff working because of minimum windows version requirements and version mismatch hell when you try to go back to older agents. I think it was Rob who suggested vbox, so thanks Rob! At the beginning of all of this I read some simple advice that said VirtualBox should be used for Windows guests, and KVM for linux guests. But I wanted to be "extra FLOSSy" and try to use the not-non-free solution. Ya, so the moral of the story is, they're right, at least for obsolete Windows (which I know many people do require for legacy software). Wife will be super happy! .htaccess file: stopping robot with escape character in name

Hello Folks, I'm trying to stop a bot from crawling a site using the .htaccess file. The problem is that it's using the backslash character as its name. Grrr... It's called: Unknown robot identified by bot\* This generates an internal server error: RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ("Unknown robot identified by bot\*") [NC] I tried, this, but it didn't help: RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ("Unknown robot identified by bot\\*") [NC] Any thoughts? Hide mouse cursor in Wayland, labwc compositor?

Hi folks. I'm trying to find something equivalent to "unclutter" or "xbanish" that will allow me to hide the mouse cursor when I'm running Wayland's labwc compositor. This is for a kiosk-mode application, using a Raspberry Pi and Debian 12 (Bookworm). Thanks!
