Circumstances finally forced me to bite the bullet and learn something I had been putting off for too long: setting up a RAID array under Linux. I'm almost embarrassed, now that I've done it, that I waited so long because it was way simpler than I'd imagined. I thought I'd have to figure out all kinds of magic with LVM, parted, and mdadm, but I found this tutorial that showed a simple set of mdadm commands to set up RAID 1: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-create-raid-arrays-… This was actually one of the simplest scenarios: the system had an SSD for the root/boot partition, and two 2 TB hard drives for data storage (/dev/sdb & sdc), so I just needed to set up RAID 1 and not worry about the intricacies of booting from RAID. So, software RAID seemed like the quick & easy way to go with a minimum of fuss. Now the nagging question: is it really this simple, or does the tutorial above oversimplify and omit some important steps? Can someone with ample RAID and mdadm experience advise or provide tips on anything else I should do or lookout for? Thanks, Gilles -- Gilles R. The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 9. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Reproducible Builds Many of us run some amount of Free and/or Open Source Software, but how can we ever be sure that what we're actually running was built from the allegedly published source code? Whilst not a complete security solution in and of itself, find out how this project helps influence and improve security and development as part of a wider set of policies. Presented by Muz. RTFM: netcat, with Wyatt Zacharias A look into a computer networking utility for reading from and writing to network connections using TCP/IP protocol, designed to be a reliable "back-end" tool that can be used directly or easily driven by other programs and scripts. The group holds its meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) GPS rollover event coming up - are your NTP servers ready?

So I just became aware of this… https://spectracom.com/resources/blog/lisa-perdue/2018/gps-2019-week-rollov… � Bottom line: on April 6th, 2019, your GPS receiver might start spitting out the wrong time. It’s a Y2K-style problem, the article describes the details. Make sure your firmware is updated and will handle this even properly, and/or your NTP software will correctly compensate for the crazy time the GPS receiver will start spitting out. � -Adam

JBOD card recommendations?

Anyone have recommendations on a model of JBOD SAS/SATA card to add to a Linux based NAS? Not looking for any hardware RAID capabilities, but if it's a RAID card with JBOD mode that's fine too. Also needs to have internal connectors as they're all internal drives. -- Wyatt Zacharias

MUUG Meeting, Sept 11, 7:30pm -- Ansible, RTFM: tcpdump

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 11. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Managing Systems with Ansible Ansible is an OSS IT automation engine, in the vein of Chef and Puppet. But what exactly can you do with it? John Gunkel will be filling us in. He'll be covering key concepts, package management, templates, roles, GUI interfaces, and more! A demo will bring it all together. RTFM: tcpdump(1) with Adam Thompson Debugging an application's behaviour is sometimes easier to do by looking at the interactions it has with other systems on the network than by examining the application itself. Modern UNIXes all come with a tool, tcpdump(1), that can examine, filter, decode, and log all the traffic seen at a network interface - whether it originates on that system or not. Adam will discuss the most common options for [12]tcpdump(1), and hopefully demonstrate a simple example. NFS problems

I'm trying to get FreeNAS (based on FreeBSD) to serve up NFS shares. It keep failing with nfsd: Can't bind to tcp addr *: Address already in use Which doesn't make sense. I tried binding to a specific address (the IP address of this server) and I get the same message, but with the IP address instead of *. No other services are running on this server, other than http (80). Where do I start? Thanks, Kevin
