Network cabling (Cat 5e)

Is anyone handy at running residential Cat 5e? I have done it in the past, but I'm not super motivated to do it again, at least without help. Compensation of some kind is negotiable. I could just buy some 50- or 100-foot cables and run those... but that's $0.50/foot, locally -- or $0.20/foot (Amazon) or $0.08/foot (Amazon, bare cable). Caution! This message was sent from outside the University of Manitoba. Hi, I have some 2-port gigabit NICs and USB keyboards (unused). Will those be appropriate as door prizes? All the software engineering and security and telecom books that could have been good door prizes (were signed by the authors etc) were all given away already. Also, someone is planning to come over this weekend to take all the cables and SSDs, switches, old laptops and desktops and such. But I still have a fair amount of engineering books (from the 1930’s onwards). If any of those are appropriate as door prizes, you can have those as well. You’re welcome to come over and take a look. If your schedule permits, please let me know. Hi, I have to get rid of a lot of engineering books (mostly old from 4 generations of engineers), computer tables, desks, couches, about a hundred 500GB, 1TB and 2TB hard drives, about 40 small SSDs, server rack and servers, book shelves, old desktops and laptops, iMacs and cables and so on. Please note that all but one of the systems have OpenBSD on them; not Windows or MacOS. Monitoring network traffic

I'd like to set up something that I can plug into my network that will track network sources, destinations, ports, packet types, etc. and allow me to graph the results. Presumably the network card and port will be in promiscuous mode to capture everything. What software should I be looking at? Free/libre software only, please. Also, what kind of hardware would be needed to support this (CPU, RAM, etc.)? apcupsd systemd /etc/nologin fail

As per my notice at the meeting tonight, here's the solution if you are using apcupsd with a new version of systemd and if it shuts your system down you cannot login after reboot. (Newest systemd 254.16 does not remove /etc/nologin on reboot, and the option to stop apcupsd from creating this file is broken.) It can't hurt to implement this right away even if you won't be using a newer systemd for a long time... this running cannot hurt anything if something has laready removed /etc/nologin. Some of us could probably count on our hands the number of binary commands we actually run on a regular basis, but if we look inside we see thousands of installed binaries (2,691 on this editor?s system to be precise). So what the heck are all these and what are they for? Well what better way to find out than dive in head first and pick something at random. In the premiere of the /bin Diving segment, Gilbert Detillieux will randomly select a command from the /bin directory and attempt to learn how to use it. This will be an opportunity for some group participation as we attempt to learn a new command and do something useful with it! Where to find the Meeting: Fortress Software Inc., 350 Keewatin St -- Unit #2 We have a new in-person meeting location now! Brad Vokey has graciously let us use his work office for our next in-person meeting. The meeting room will be open by 7:00 pm, with the actual meeting starting at 7:30 pm. If driving, enter the lot using the most north east entrance and drive around to the south west corner of the building (see route in map detail on poster linked below). You can use any of the free, ample, and safe parking spots that say "reserved" in front of units #1 through #4 before entering unit #2. Bus stops #30814 and #30880 (route 77) are only 150 meters away. The last bus leaves for Polo Park at 10:15 pm and for Garden City at 10:31 pm. Logan Ave. bus routes #19, #26, and #27 are a 600 meter (8 minute) walk to the south. For those unable or preferring not to attend in person, the meeting will also be available online, using BBB as usual.
