NTP DDOS Attacks

Does anyone know of a public site which documents the traffic associated with the recent NTP DDOS attacks? I'm trying to see if the attacks correlate to some packet loss we are seeing. -- John Lange

DoD multicast?

Starting Feb 4 I've been receiving on my Shaw modem connection an IP protocol 2 (IGMP) packet to 224.0.0.1 (all hosts multicast) from 22.34.128.1 (US DoD!!) every 1 minute on the dot. I've gotten over 10,000 so far. My iptables DROPs them all, but I'm wondering WTF? Is something misconfigured on the net with the DoD or Shaw or am I being targeted by DoD for some reason?

Linux "mom ready"?

Faced with an expiring XP, I had a thought about moving my mother (complete techno-luddite) to Linux. She only needs an office suite (OOo instead of Word should do), Skype (works fine on linux, and her webcam is supported), an email app (evolution/thunderbird instead of Outlook), and that's about it. It's Linux or Win7. If I'm setting up and admin'ing, are there any downsides really? I can make it look/behave much like XP, so the learning curve may be smaller than with Win7. Am I delusional because I breathe Linux? Or can this be done? Corollary: What distro?

As discussed at the meeting, here's what my oom_killer messages look like (see below). Each time it happened it was a different program "invoking" oom-killer, no rhyme or reason. One time it invoked oom-killer 170 times in 4 minutes before I issued a reboot. The only weird mem related options I am using are: # try to improve garbage smb/nfs performance net.core.rmem_max=8388608 net.core.wmem_max=8388608 net.core.rmem_default=262143 net.core.wmem_default=262143 # test to enable more disk blocks to remain in cache vm.swappiness=80 # 121205 test 30 to enable more disk blocks to remain in cache longer, seems to immediately help # 131022 switched back to 100 to see if can fix "huge cache slows io down to a crawl after a few days" issue: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/94079/massive-unpredictable-i-o-per… vm.vfs_cache_pressure=100 I will take out all the above and reboot into the new kernel to see if that helps. I was using them for specific reasons, but they aren't critical. My "taint" is due to prop nvidia driver as there's a current bad bug that makes myth unusable with nouveau. I continue to recommend buying from www.dellrefurbished.ca (formerly dfsdirect.ca) and getting the extended warranty. I prefer to buy Latitude laptops, Optiplex desktops, or Precision anythings, because those business models tend to be much more durable, and docking stations are available (cheap!) for the laptops. Looking for a used computer to upgrade a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz

Is it possible to find a reasonably-priced used machine to replace the above with a Core 2 Duo (or better, or AMD equivalent)? That is, if it's $400 for a used machine, I might as well spend a few bucks more and get something new. Memory Express has refurbished machines for as low as $139 (see http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX45064), but no stock in Winnipeg. Anyone got anything? It's for a retired couple, and I'd like to upgrade them from XP to Win7 and something a little faster. Kevin

Really old MTS Internet drop?

Friends of my parents have had MTS Internet service for a decade or more (probably more). They told me that they have a coax cable in the room with their computer (an IBM Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, to give you an idea of the age of this setup; they had MTS Internet service before that in an older computer) AND that this coax cable plugs directly into their PC.Has anyone seen this sort of setup? I didn't look at it myself; this is just what I got from them over the phone just now. Are they mistaken, or did MTS in the past provide a PC card with a coax connector for Internet access? It's possible that they didn't recognize an Ethernet cable, but I did explicitly ask if it was connected to the computer with a screw-on type connector which they confirmed it was. Kevin
