Gmail problem sending from your own SMTP server

Gmail is sure piling up its problems like never before in my 8-10 years of using it. In addition to the other issues of the last two months, we now have: The recent intermittent Gmail problem in sending from your own SMTP server (if you don't want your "send from" address at your own domain name to be an "alias" of your Gmail address) has now become an "always happens" problem. Here's the failure message you get from Gmail: Message not delivered You're sending this from a different address or alias using the 'Send mail as' feature. The settings for your 'Send mail as' account are misconfigured or out of date. Check those settings and try resending. TLS Negotiation failed, the certificate doesn't match the host. After much experimenting and Internet research, I found the answer buried in Gmail support forums - an answer from a smart user, not from Google. In my case, since I use Tucows/OpenSRS for my SMTP server, the chain is smtp-1.marityme.com [cname] --> smtp.marityme.com.cust.a.hostedemail.com --> 216.40.42.5 --> [RDNS] mail.hostedemail.com Tucows/OpenSRS specifies the server *smtp.marityme.com.cust.a.hostedemail.com <http://smtp.marityme.com.cust.a.hostedemail.com>*, which I cname to for concenience and elegance, and that resolves to * 216.40.42.5*, whose RDNS lookup gives *mail.hostedemail.com <http://mail.hostedemail.com>*. Now, unlike before, Gmail expects me to give *mail.hostedemail.com <http://mail.hostedemail.com>* as the SMTP server in the "send from" configuration, and then the sending mechanism works again (at least yesterday and today, who knows about tomorrow). I'd like to not move these from my old basement to my new basement this summer... and no, I have no idea why I still have PC100 and PC133 RAM hanging around - the DIMM in the top row is clearly from Computer Boulevard! Strong preference to people who actually have a use for it, not just moving it from my shelf to yours. I'll probably drop these off at a recycler sometime next week if no-one speaks up for them. Looking for an AMD Phenom II CPU

DNS linters / consistency checkers?

Between roughly 10 and 20 years ago there was a bevy, nearly a plethora, of tools to scan your various BIND zone files and check that everything was in order, no illegal names existed, PTRs matched up with As, etc., etc. Today I can only find two, one is dead (dlint) and doesn't check zone files only live DNS, and the other (validns) doesn't do PTR<-->A checks which is what I really wanted. Where did all the other zone consistency-checking tools go? Anyone have any pointers / links? Thanks, -Adam

Gmail spam filtering super-aggressive lately

I've had a lot of trouble in the last few months with Gmail's spam filtering having become super-aggressive, but tonight we have a live case worthy of analysis. In the thread "Opinions on Fedora Server" initiated by Alberto Abrao <alberto(a)abrao.net>, *both* of Alberto's postings went to my Gmail spam, while Trevor Cordes's posting came through fine. A detail on my use of Gmail: I use it as infrastructure for my own e-mail addresses @marityme.net. Incoming e-mails to @marityme.net are forwarded into my Gmail address from somewhere else, and outgoing e-mails from @ marityme.net are sent from Gmail where I set up these addresses as valid "from" addresses. Yeah, I suspect the trouble is somewhere in Gmail's new expectations re TXT SPF, DKIM, DomainKeys, and such. Hartmut W Sager - Tel +1-204-339-8331

Main firewall / router for public facing subnet

Hi folks, hope everybody is safe and sound. This may be a basic question for most of you, but at any rate, I would rather ask here as I like the way MUUG members approach things. I have a Shaw connection with a few Static IPs. As of now the modem is bridged, and each machine grabs its own IP and goes to town, be it a static for servers or a dynamic for my local network router. On each of these, I set up firewall and whatever else is needed. I have the feeling that's redundant. That, and having a main router in front of them would help me set up things such as QoS and a central firewall. I am used to doing this for simple NAT duties, but this time I would have a router managing public facing IP addresses. Any tips on what should I look for to get started?
