hi gurus, looking at a unix system, x display. is it possible to takeover control of the mouse cursor on a system level? ie. instead of having to move the mouse to move the cursor, is it possible write a program which moves the cursor automatically ? and that movement is not restricted to having the cursor inside its own window? i am sure there's got to be a low level function call to move the mouse in response to mouse-device movement. just not sure if it's accessable to programmer. any help is greately appreciated regards tien

Actually, grub itself doesn't need any of that, it simply passes it on to the Linux kernel. :) But the kernel would have needed that all along. I suspect it was getting it from someplace else before your 7.3 upgrade. Since you seemed to have an appropriate append statement in /etc/lilo.conf, I suspect you had been using LILO previously, and just switched to grub in this latest upgrade. Since grub is the default selection, it's easy to do that without even realising it. -- Gilbert E. SCSI emulation returns... burner works

In grub.conf I added hdc=ide-scsi and Red Hat automatically updated fstab during boot. cdrecord -scanbus showed a device at 0,0,0 I had prepared a file in /usr/LTSP using mkisofs -r -J -o /usr/LTSP/ltsp.iso /usr/LTSP ( got this from an English Linux magazine. I can never understand man documents ) So I tried to burn a CD using cdrecord -v dev=0,0,0 speed=4 /usr/LTSP/ltsp.iso and it looked good. I booted into ms windows and the CD is readable under DOS too. Thanks for all the advice. I would never have figured this out on my own. Strange that in 7.2, grub didn't need the statement hdc=ide-scsi, but I quess things change all the time. Thanks again!

Kernel recompilations are rarely ever needed anymore with Red Hat Linux, since most drivers are set up as loadable modules. Don't recompile your kernel unless you really know what you're doing and really need some feature that's not otherwise available, otherwise you may just break other things that are working fine as is. > Is there anything else I can do to get back my scsi emulation > without compiling the kernel ? Absolutely. Try the above, and if that still doesn't work, there may be another approach to loading the ide-scsi driver which will work (similar to the way Red Hat pre-loads other SCSI drivers via ramdisk). -- Gilbert E. lost SCSI emulation - burner no work

Did a lsmod and got Module Size Used by sg 32612 0 ( unused ) ide-scsi 9312 0 scsi_mod 103904 2 [ sg ide-scsi ] Duh? What does this mean? It looks to me that I already have SCSI emulation but its not working the way it should for the burner. The burner is the secondary master. For cdrecord dev=0,1,0 used to work before the upgrade. cdrecord -scanbus finds nothing. cat /proc/scsi/scsi attached devices=none Any information would be most appreciated.

I upgraded from Red Hat 7.2 to 7.3 and lost my SCSI emulation, so now cdrecord -scanbus can't find any SCSI devices and I can't use my burner. fstab has not changed from 7.2 /etc/rc.d/rc.local has /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi /sbin/modprobe sg I've looked, and there is no ide-scsi in sbin In /etc/modules.conf I've got append="hdc=ide-scsi" I've done chmod 666 /dev/scd0 chmod 666 /dev/scd1 ( This is just a home machine so don't have to worry about security) The burner is the secondary master in the BIOS so hdc looks OK. Does this mean I'll have to do a dreaded "kernel compilation"? I've installed the 2.4.18-3 kernel source in /usr/src/ just in case, but I'm not excited about compiling kernels. Is there anything else I can do to get back my scsi emulation without compiling the kernel ?

FTP problems

G'Day, I have been trying for months to connect to a vendors FTP site using my Linux box (RH7.2), with no success. I can connect to the site but when I issue a command (e.g cd or get <filename> I recieve ENTERING PASSIVE MODE (IP ADDRESS) and after some time connection timeout. I know the box at the other end is NT4.0. If I use a windows 98 O/S no problems. Does anyone have some suggestions to analyize the problem? I can use some links to do some reading if you have them. Free Data Emergency Guide

Howdy folks! I just received, in the MUUG mail box, a sample booklet from a company called Action Front Data Recovery Labs (www.actionfront.com). The booklet is called Data Emergency Guide, and provides general (in most cases not system specific) advice on data loss prevention, backups, and how to recognize and resolve a data loss emergency. They also use the guide as a way of promoting their company's data recovery services, of course. They are offering user group members additional free copies of the guide. All we have to do is contact them, indicating the number requested.
