The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting online, on Tuesday, January 11th, at 7:30pm: Network Monitoring with Netdisco and LibreNMS Netdisco is "a web-based network management tool suitable for small to very large networks." LibreNMS is "a fully featured network monitoring system that provides a wealth of features and device support." Which one is right for you? The answer to that depends on what you're looking to monitor. In this presentation, Gilbert Detillieux will describe and demo both of these web-based monitoring tools, and show some of the unique advantages of each one. 55" monitor and multiple laptops

So there's the 55" TV I'm using as a monitor, and the cookie cooling racks I found at Lee Valley that are wide enough to accommodate my laptops *with* dock without having to take over the whole desk. Two notable downsides: HDMI power management doesn't work the same way with a TV as with a monitor, so I have to keep the remote handy to turn it back on every time I sit down... And the power button for the lower laptop is in the far back-right corner :-(. Thankfully I don't need it often! -Adam

A reminder that the MUUG online meeting will be on BBB this evening... The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting online, on Tuesday, December 14th, at 7:30pm: Jellyfin, Extended Round-Table and Show-and-Tell MUUG has a tradition of making the December meeting more of an informal, social gathering. Because we're still meeting online, we've had to let go of some of the traditional aspects of this year-end meeting (like sharing food), but we will try to keep some of our socail December tradition alive. Show us your favourite gadget! As part of an extended round-table discussion, we'll try to keep the gadget show-and-tell. (This year, you don't have to haul it to the meeting site, but it will have to be small enough to show on your webcam!) If you have a cool device, something unusual, whether brand new or ready for the museum, there will be an opportunity to show it off. Mini-Presentation: Jellyfin This month, Wyatt Zacharias will demonstrate Jellyfin, a suite of free and open-source multimedia applications designed to organize, manage, and share digital media files to networked devices. Harvest Manitoba We won't be able to collect food and cash donations this year, but please remember that the needs for some may be greater than usual. We encourage you to donate to Harvest Manitoba, or your favourite local charity. This will once again be an online meeting. Do not use BellMTS Fibre internet

I recently switched from Shaw Gigabit Internet (1 Gb down, 100 Mb up) to BellMTS Fibre 500 (500 Mb down, 500 Mb up). And then a month or so later I find out that Bell BLOCKS ALL NTP TRAFFIC. So none of the systems in my home have the right time anymore. Yes, there is a workaround: Manually switch all of your devices and systems to point to ntp.mts.net to get the right time. This sucks. If I had known this, I would not have switched. The rep I talked to said there had been some sort of attack using NTP, so they just block it all now. Grr.

shaw 2nd ip

I think with Shaw residential I can get 2 dynamic IPs? I'm using my modem in "bridge mode" or "wired mode" or whatever the shaw techs want to call it this week. In other words, the builtin router is disabled and it acts just like an old-style cable modem direct into my firewall. Obviously, I'm getting 1 dynamic. That's great. Can I get the 2nd too, but using just the one cable to the modem, and just the one NIC? I'm guessing I'll have to assign a 2nd IP, 2nd fake MAC, and/or "fake" interface to the existing interface? Then setup dhcpclient to use it (too)? (All in linux, of course.) Is what I'm describing doable or am I missing something here? Any tips on the sequence of events here? Thanks!

Quick tip for tonight's meeting: make sure your browser is set for hardware acceleration of video!

Hello everyone, during our last meeting, I mentioned that I would try to put together a quick how-to to optimize the performance for our participants that are using Firefox on Linux. This may also be useful for some folks on Windows, especially these with older cards such as Radeon HD 5xxx series, which are (or maybe used to be?) blocklisted even on Windows. Now, a big change that happened between our last meeting and this one is that, with the release of Firefox 94, hardware acceleration is (finally!) enabled by default on Linux. Yay! However, there are a few tweaks still, so let's get on to them. Open the browser, then type about:config at the address bar. There, search for: gfx.webrender then double-click on gfx.webrender.all to set it to true. (this should NOT be needed with FF 94, but it does not hurt anything either). you can also try to force-enable the compositor (gfx.webrender.compositor.force-enabled set to true), but that glitches often enough, so be prepare to undo it. Then, search for: media.ff set to true: media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled, media.navigator.mediadatadecoder_vpx_enable If using X, set gfx.x11-egl.force-enabled to true. This should be enough to get most people going when using the out-of-the-box FOSS drivers. For Nvidia proprietary driver users, a low-hanging fruit that's often missing is libva-vdpau-driver. The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting online, on Tuesday, November 9th, at 7:30pm: Jitsi vs Big Blue Button: Jitsi setup on AWS - Wyatt BBB setup on OVH - Adam This month, Wyatt Zacharias and Adam Thompson will be demonstrating setting up two different videoconferencing solutions on two different hosting platforms. MUUG has been using Jitsi for its own meetings over the last year, and tried out Big Blue Button for last month's meeting. AGM Plus, this month's meeting will be the MUUG annual general meeting, which included the election of the MUUG board of directors for the 2021-2022 year (by acclamation, again this year).
