IBM "clicky" keyboards

Enough people have wondered/asked/complained to me about this that I'm posting this now as a public service. IBM Model "M" keyboards are still available, *NEW*, today. They are expensive, but they are the original design that you can use as a melee weapon. The catch is that they don't say "IBM" or even "Lexmark" on them. They are available for purchase from the manufacturer, Unicomp, who can be found online at http://www.pckeyboard.com/. You can also find some vintage NIB units from time to time at http://www.clickykeyboards.com/. There are also a number of other manufacturers now making similar, but not quite as good, keyboards. - CVT Inc., the maker of the Avant Stellar (I own two of them), which is the direct descendant of the Northgate Omnikey, seems to have restructured and no trace of their keyboard manufacturing operation can be found online. However, Northgate keyboards are still available new-in-box from (this is a horrible site, beware) http://www.northgate-keyboard-repair.com/. - The Happy Hacking keyboard (now owned by Fujitsu, apparently) is equally comforting to some people despite having a totally different feel. They, and many others, can be had from http://www.elitekeyboards.com/ - Das Keyboard - Anything using Cherry MX Green, Blue, or White keyswitches. The "green" switches apparently are the closest anyone's come yet to emulating the IBM/Lexmark/Unicomp switches... and they can be had in MUCH cheaper keyboards, like the Rosewill RK-9000 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201040 and http://techreport.com/review/23405/rosewill-rk-9000-series-mechanical-ke yboards-reviewed). - And there are an increasing number (yes, again, after the big die-off ca. 2009) of speciality manufacturers of "ergonomic" keyboards that are making clicky keyswitches available as an option. One of the better ones is a tiny shop in Ontario, but I can't find the name right now. Hi All, Had anyone ever used pNFS? Is there a free pNFS server implementation that is useful, or only Dell/Panasas products are usable? And finally, would you run NFS or pNFS off ZFS JBOD backend, are there any hidden rocks? Hello Andrew, I mentioned your request for Captive Portal recommendations at our last Manitoba Unix User Group general meeting. The consensus was to purchase a MikroTik router and use their HotSpot Gateway software (http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:License#License_Levels). Their level 4 license (a one-time fee of only $45) gives you access to 200 active hotspot users at once and 15 days of initial config support. Shaw's offering is actually a pretty good price, surprisingly. He could buy a pfSense/Netgate SG-2440 to replace the (p.o.s., IMHO) RV320 and get captive portal functionality built in. I would replace all the wireless with Ubiquity. But obviously the hotel doesn't want to spend any actual money on this, so... My nephew needs a recommendation for a captive portal service for a hotel. Has anybody ever set one of these up? Advice? Another workshop.

Given the confusingly fantastic response to the let's encrypt workshop, I am willing to do 1 or 2 more of the 30-45 minute workshops but am not in tune enough know what topics are of interest. One person thus far is very interested in OpenBSD/PF training (while I'm happy to that's well... a lot of work and a weekend/half-day kind of topic) and the evergreen interest in networking (same deal as previous one... more of a half-day kind of thing). If there is significant interest we can go that route later in the year and would require another person to help me with material. The other caveat is that it will be a Friday, as I have child-rearing duties on Tuesdays until the end of the year. Send me ideas __(OFF LIST)__ of what you are interested in hearing from me on in within the IT/sysadmin/infosec space and we'll see what I can accommodate. One easy one is setting up a pi-hole (https://pi-hole.net/, which is a fun 10 minute activity that is also pretty darned neat/useful). Again what is the community interested in... cross-posting to MUUG. Let me know... (off-list... was I clear there? :P) -- Sean P.S. A VERY cool buddy is ready to schedule a malware analysis workshop and his materials so far look pretty awesome. Let me know (off list) to register interest.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 13. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Midnight Commander Brian Lowe will demonstrate and discuss Midnight Commander. It is a text-mode console-based file manager that combines a pair of easy to navigate file panels with a command line. Together they provide a powerful and versatile environment for viewing, moving, and copying files and directories. RTFM: cal This month, Brad Vokey will demonstrate cal, a simple calendar display program for the command line. Learn some neat tricks about this useful tool. Door Prizes On top of whatever else is on offer this month, we'll have a copy of the O'Reilly book "Advanced Perl Programming" as a door prize.
