Some of our members have been convinced this was imminent for, oh, about a decade now. It's finally happened, but as is pointed out, relies on side-chanel attacks on shared hardware.
This STILL doesn't mean virtualization itself is inherently insecure... but it does mean public clouds just got a little harder to trust for high-security operations.

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly
meeting on Tuesday, November 13. The meeting topic for this month is
as follows:
OpenRISC System on a Chip
Robert Keizer will talk about OpenRISC and its applications:
* Why run an FPGA device
* What you can do with one
* Running a linux kernel on an FPGA
* In-lining custom instructions.
Instead of the RTFM segment, we'll have a Gadget show-and-tell.
Bring along any gadgets or hardware you have so everyone else
can see what's out there.
The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of
every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and
August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a
MUUG member to attend.

Our November 13 meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave.
(between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to
sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you
(in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm,
so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may
not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not
be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required
to show photo ID at the security desk.
Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice
Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also
available nearby, at Portage Place, for $5.00 for the evening. Bicycle
parking is available in a bike rack under video surveillance located
behind the building on Webb Place.

Hey, I've been trying to give LXC a go. I want to be able to spin up a
container that I can ssh into and run a few programs inside it.
But it's just not working. I've been trying it on Fedora 17 and the
documentation I can find is too old to be useful. I've been able to make
some translations but I still can't get a container started.
I have a rootfs created and tried a few combinations of fstab files, but
when I start the container I get nothing on the console, and sometimes if I
leave it it'll crash the box. My guess is that I haven't re-created the
init process or startup scripts properly, but I can't find any logs to tell
me one way or another.
For step 1 I don't care much about the distribution so I'm trying Ubuntu
next, but in the meantime, I thought I'd ask if anyone has any experience
to share regarding LXC?
Thanks,
Sean
