Like the inaugural WebApps '10 and '11, WebApps '12 seeks to attract cutting-edge research that advances the state of the art, not only of novel Web applications but also of infrastructure,frameworks, tools, and techniques that support the development, analysis/testing, operation, or deployment of those applications. Possible topics include but are not limited to: * Storage for Web-scale applications * Techniques for testing and debugging * Novel strategies for fault tolerance or high availability in Web apps * The Web as an emerging platform in new application areas * Making Web apps social and integrating with social utilities, e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Google+ * HCI techniques related specifically to Web apps * Measurement, modeling, workload generation, and other tools to aid experimental research on Web apps * New and unusual app features or implementation techniques * Media delivery applications and infrastructure * Client-side libraries, frameworks, toolkits, plug-ins * Server-side frameworks * Languages and language engineering advances relevant to Web app development * Deployment substrates and technologies (cloud computing, infrastructure as a service, testing as a service, etc.) WebApps '12 will consist of a single track of refereed papers and, new this year, a set of short paper demos. Shaw Broadband 50

I was an Shaw Extreme user and decided to try out Broadband 50. It turns out that Extreme customers can upgrade to Broadband 50 at no additional cost. They use a SMCDG3N a DOCSIS 3.0 N wireless router. Very nice specs including IPv6 support. http://www.smc.com/files/AN/DS_SMCD3GN-RES.pdf Shaw mails out the modem. Of course the first thing when I got it was how do I get my 2nd IP address. If you want to use 2 IP addresses then Shaw turns off the router and wireless function. So it is a modem with a 4 port Gig switch. This is how I am running it. I did a test at speedtest.net got 48.64Mbps down and 2.87Mbps up which is pretty close to 50Mbps down and 3Mbps up. -- Bill

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 11. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Mini-HowTo Topics: MBR Rescue and Dropbox What happens when you trash your MBR? Rob Keizer will discuss ways to get your system up and running again quickly. Dropbox is a free file sharing service with client support for Windows, MacOS X, Linux, and even some mobile platforms. It lets you automatically replicate files to any of your configured clients, share them with other users, or access them from the web. Gilbert Detillieux will show Dropbox in use, and show the installation of client software under Linux. Before the break, as this month's RTFM topic, Michael Doob will talk about using the rsync(1) command. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $5.00 for the evening. Hardware question re: xserve 2004

Hey, I realize this isn't a UNIX question, but I thought there might be someone on this list who can help me. I have a Mac XServe 2004 on which the power supply just died. Is there anyone who has a spare power supply for an xserve 2004 that might be willing to sell? Regards, Syd
