html pretty code

Adam thought someone might find this useful, so here it is. It's a perl program I wrote to "pretty" html for easy readability/debugging by applying indenting. The neat thing is, it's entirely contained in 1 regular expression; no loops! Well, except for the weird nl while loop. This ain't your father's regex! Yes, there's a zillion html pretty programs out there but none did what I wanted in a few ways: 1. Just fire & forget, no 200 options to worry about. 2. Works on random html snippets not just whole pages, so you can view source from the web and just paste a few lines from the middle of any web page and it will pretty it up. 3. Challenge to do something like this only using regex! There may be a few tags it doesn't catch yet (just add them to the main tag list), but that won't hurt the output very much. Anyone handy with Git?

Anyone out there handy with git and can offer some help? I had my application in SVN and did an git svn clone to work on it locally. I branched to work on a feature (f1), then branched again to work on a feature of that feature (f2). Along the way I pushed the local git repo to a git server I set up so that I could work on the code on another computer. I also made some changes along the way in SVN, git svn rebased them to the local git repo, and merged them up into my development branch. I tried merging f2 into f1 and then f1 into master which gets the correct code into master, but when I try to git svn dcommit to get the changes back SVN, I get Unable to determine upstream SVN information from working tree history I got some help on the #git channel and some googling on the multiple possibilities with that error. After some git reset --hard and rebasing f2->f1->master<-git-svn I could svn dcommit (with a few merge conflicts) but I'm still missing some commits. I'd like to be able to properly merge/rebase whatever I have to so that I can keep the git history inside svn, so I don't want to do a big diff of the git repo and apply it to svn. I'd also like to understand what's going on here because working with git has been fun, but I can't really move to it if I'm blindly merging and committing until I get the results I want. TV tuner cards

Does anybody have any experience with digital TV tuner cards? I'm thinking of picking one up in the next couple of months and I'm curious about which ones work well with Shaw. It would be nice to have access to the HD channels on the computer since none of the TVs in the house (or the one digital box we have) is HD compatible. I think I would need a basic set of definitions and vocabulary to work from before I start. Incidentally I plan to follow this up with a call to Shaw some time in the next couple of months. Consulting the folks here seems to be the logical first step (even before Google) because a few have actually set these things up. Some time in the future I might consider some FTA stuff. The one person I know who uses it all the time keeps putting off my request to actually see it in action. Sure the reviews from the satellite buffs are "It's great" but that really doesn't say anything. Later Mike

Mint 10 installs (First impressions)

Quick impression for Mint 10. Like Mint 9 it is still a derivative of Ubuntu (I don't think it's running Unity though). On the machines at the lab it was pretty fast. Given those machines are at least five years old that's saying something. Compared to Mint 9 it is slightly slower. According to their web page most of the changes are superficial apart from additional codecs. It looks like they've put some effort into the eye-candy. The green is gone and replaced with grey. Given what was installed in Mint 9, I'd say this is more of something for the end user as opposed to a developer. This is something you could show off to the boss for their home machine. Since it was just released on Friday I haven't had much of a chance to stress it any. If anyone is looking to get it, connecting to their web site may take a few tries. Given the connection issues, my suggestion is to grab the torrent files for download. They take less than an hour for the DVD at this point. There is also a CD version which is slightly smaller than the DVD version. Later Mike

Bo-Keep 1.0 launch party

MUUG members are invited to attend ParIT's launch party for Bo-Keep 1.0 on Sunday November 14 at noon. Location: 91 Albert Street, 3rd floor (Rudolph Rocker Cultural Centre) [Please note that the third floor is only reachable by stairs.] Free Catered Food will be available. Bo-Keep is a platform that support custom entry interfaces for specific tasks to ease book keeping. "Bo-Keep helps you keep your books so you don't get lost". It integrates with GnuCash, which I gave a presentation on at MUUG a few years ago. Not only are we calling this our 1.0 milestone, but it will be the first release that we will actively promote as a public free software project. This makes me wonder, do MUUG members remember the last time (if ever?) a Winnipeg company did a public launch and celebration for software that runs on unix platform? The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 9. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Blogging and Podcasting with WordPress and podPress WordPress is an open-source content management system for setting up blogs and websites. It's fairly compact and very easy to set up on a web server that supports PHP and MySQL. With the addition of the podPress plugin (a "dream plugin for Podcasters using WordPress"), you have all you need to set up an audio or video podcast feed that is RSS2 and iTunes compatible. In this presentation, Gilbert Detillieux will describe this software, show some of the trickier parts of setting up the prerequisite software, walk us through the installation and configuration of WordPress and podPress, and end off with an initial posting to a shiny new podcast feed. This month's RTFM topic will be on DNS resolution. Sean Cody will discuss and demonstrate some tools for DNS resolution in UNIX and some lookup tools such as dig(1), host(1) and nslookup(1). The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy).
