Grub Error 18

Hi All, I have installed Fedora on Macbook. It works fine when I boot it in native mode. However, when I boot it via parallels, I get the following error. Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS. I do understand that this error is thrown when Grub tries to read an address beyond the end of BIOS translated area. Woot has them on sale today for $42.99 http://www.woot.com/ They are refurbished so they are probably V1 (but you won't know for sure till you get it). The only other problem is that they don't seem to want to ship to Canada for this one. Please let me know if you find a way around it. -Montana

Heads up. If you want to buy a Sansa for Rockbox the V1 version is in a whitish box and has 2006 on the bottom. The V3 which is not supported yet is in a dark box with a blue circle and has 2007 on the bottom. I bought the wrong one from Staples but on the condition that I could return within 30 days. -- Bill

MUUG Meeting, March 11, 7:30pm -- Rockbox

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 11. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Rockbox Montana Quiring and Jeff Green will be presenting this month on the open source firmware for MP3 media player, called Rockbox. It aims to be considerably more functional and efficient than your device's stock firmware while remaining easy to use and customizable. It runs on a plethora of hardware platforms and frees the user from the shackles of DRM. Please visit www.rockbox.org for more info on the players it supports. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $3.00 for the evening. FreeBSD ZFS vs. OpenSolaris ZFS?

I see that the latest FreeBSD release, 7.0, is supposed to support Sun's ZFS file system. I was wondering if you were to (for example) install FreeBSD on disk A using FreeBSD's 'normal' file system (UFS? UFS2? FFS? I haven't been following BSD file systems), and then set up disks B and C as a mirrored ZFS pool, could you later install OpenSolaris on disk A (replacing FreeBSD) and have it read the existing ZFS stuff on disks B and C? Or install OpenSolaris first, then FreeBSD later? As a bonus question, would anyone care to comment as to whether FreeBSD 7.0 or OpenSolaris (any version) are stable/reliable enough for a (home) production file server, specifically with respect to the ZFS support?

Running a mail server in Shaw-land

For anyone running a mail server that has to use shawmail.wp.shawcable.netas the smarthost, it has a limit of 1,000 messages/day before it cuts you off for 24 hours. I suspect it might be closer to 2,500 [0], but the CSR at Shaw told me 1,000. Normally you wouldn't run into this, but as it turns out all the email coming in to my server gets relayed to gmail, including the spam. You can see if you're under the ban: # telnet shawmail.wp.shawcable.net 25 Trying 64.59.128.135... Connected to shawmail.wp.shawcable.net (64.59.128.135). Escape character is '^]'. 4.5.9|Spam limit has been reached. Connection closed by foreign host. Sean 0. I have heard of some success using it but I would wait a release or two before I would consider it production stable. If by production you mean home use and you backup your data regularly then in that case I would say 'have at it.' I would say it would be a cold day in hell before I would even be allowed to consider running it on one of the X4500's (I dream for that day). -- Sean
